Captain’s Message Members & Friends, My long awaited Captain’s Day was held on Saturday 19th September and what a fabulous day. Many thanks to you, the members for your good wishes, cards, gifts and kind words on the day. It certainly made it a memorable one. The atmosphere and friendship in the Clubhouse was fantastic and I was delighted to have had the opportunity to breakfast with team captains and Club Officers, lunch with my guests and dine with my committee and family. It was worth the wait! A huge thanks again to David, Agnes, Luke and staff. With a full timesheet played in glorious sunshine, the competition ran to plan thanks to the excellent work of Pat Mc Daniel, to Gerry Fox who assisted with the draw, the starters who kept the players “moving”, to Karl, Peter and Dave on cards and to my committee for their support on the day. Congratulations to the winner of my Captain’s prize, Michael McNamara, with a score of 38 pts. Our Senior Cup team, captained by Kevin Flanagan, won the Connacht semi final last Sunday against Enniscrone GC 4-1 and played Galway GC in the final. A strong Galway team took the title in the afternoon for the 25th time. Interestingly they now match CSGC’s title wins. Thanks to T.J., Ruairi, Shane, Thomas, Alan, David, Steffan, Niall and to team captain Kevin assisted by Robbie for their preparation and commitment this Summer. Well done lads. Matchplay competitions are reaching final stages; the Golfer of the Year is a close contest; 4 Cup competitions still to be played and collection of prizes for winners this coming Sunday. Cups will be presented at a later date. Congrats to Christopher Longworth who won the Captain’s Prize to the boys and also won the junior Golfer of the Year for 2020 and to Aodhagan Brady who last weekend retained his Sean Fallon Cup title. A Liaison Committee has been formed by the Club, as part of the GUI and ILGU amalgamation, comprising three members from the men’s committee and three members from ladies committee. A circular issued to members sought nominations for positions to a newly formed regional executive committee and the nominations were submitted to the GUI this week. Elections for these positions will be held shortly. A special general meeting of the Club is scheduled for Wednesday 7th October from 6 p.m to decide whether the Club should proceed with a costal erosion project involving construction of rock armour revetment and also the repair of rock armour. A notice of the meeting has been circulated with details of the motions to be discussed. It is important that members familiarise themselves with these and a member of the Coastal Protection Committee and Management Council will be available on the evening to answer questions. With the Autumn Equinox on 21/22 September, the point where day and night are of equal length, green leaves changing to brown, swallows almost gone, a reminder of the Winter League and the winter Wednesday society entry sheets which are posted on the noticeboard. Regards, John Mc Hugh Captain CSGC

Senior Cup Update With the Pandemic, Interclub golf at the elite level was restricted to the Senior Cup. Preparation involved get togethers on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting in May with myself and Robbie Fitzpatrick sharing the supervision. In Connacht a decision was made to divide the province into a northern and southern section. Not every club enters the Senior Cup. We had a bye in the first round and then played Strandhill in our first game with 3 matches in Strandhill. Thomas Finnegan and Shane Underwood won well at home and so we just needed one win away and this was provided by TJ Ford who I believe was 6 under par winning his game. Alan Gaynor was looking like he would also take a point against the veteran Adrian Wynne in his first Senior Cup match. We then faced Enniscrone who had beaten a fancied Roscommon team. The neutral venue was Athlone. TJ led us out and got stronger as the match went on to win 3 and 2. Ruairi O’Connor and Alan were always in control and both won on the 13th. One of the Enniscrone players was 16 year old Cormac Feeney, who joined our club this year. Cormac and Thomas Finnegan were having a great tussle when they were called in. Shane Underwood was also having a great battle and was called in when looking like being 1 down with 2 to play. Shane Underwood David Brady Ruari O’Connor Alan Gaynor TJ Ford Thomas Finnegan
Senior Cup Update And so to the Connacht final against our old rivals Galway Golf Club. Galway were excellent and after 9 holes we were well behind in all but one match. The lads battled hard and TJ looked like being level playing the last and Ruairi was one up on our own Stephen Brady. However Galway were superb and will be very hard to beat as they defend their All Ireland Crown. We lost 4-1. Our squad for the year was TJ Ford, Ruairi O’Connor, Alan Gaynor, Shane Underwood, Thomas Finnegan, David Brady, Stefan O’Hara and Niall McDermott. Sincere thanks are due to the lads, to my assistant Robbie and we also had excellent help from Jude O’Reilly. We also had a session in Castledargan facilitated by Xavier Medas. Finally spectators were severely restricted so I would like to thank Captain John, Terry, Anton, Paddy, Tom, Oonagh and John for travelling to support. We have young players emerging and will be stronger next year. Kevin Flanagan Senior Cup Team Captain

Junior Report Saturday, 26th September saw the final outing in our Junior Golfer of the Year(Race to Bomore). This was also our Captain’s Prize to the Juniors and we are delighted for our Captain John McHugh that again, he got another very fine day. Double points were awarded in our Race to Bomore Competition and we had an excellent competition on the day. The winner of both the Captain’s Prize, and the Race to Bomore was Christopher Longworth, who has had an outstanding year bringing his handicap from 21 all the way to 9.6. Other notable performances during the Year would have come from young Robert McGonigle, Grandson of the legendary Johnnie McGonigle. His handicap has come from 25 at the start of the year down to 13 at the end of the year. He finished runner up. For our younger golfers who played 9-hole and 5-hole competitions off the Green Tees Shane Flanagan (Junior Convenor), Christopher Longworth, winner on Saturdays in Bomore, last Saturday the 26th was the final outing of the year. The 9- of Captain's prize to the Boys & Captain John McHugh hole event saw 1st and 2nd for the Tarrant brothers with Leo Tarrant coming first, and his brother Noah finishing 2nd, with the ever-enthusiastic Zach Sullivan coming in 3rd. The 5-hole competition was won by Shay Smith who is already promising to be the star of our Junior Programme in the years to come. Luke, Jimmy, Sean & Aodhagan on the first tee box, Bomore, Saturday 26th September
Junior Report On Sunday, we had our Sean Fallon Cup which is also one of the highlights of our Junior Calendar for our single handicap golfers. This competition was the brain child of former Captain Anton Murphy and is run towards the end of the golfing season each year. The competition is a 36-hole event played on the one day with 18 holes in the morning in Bomore, and 18 in the afternoon on our Championship Links. It is a gross competition and open to only our single handicap golfers. We had eight boys go to the starting line at 8.30am on Sunday morning, and after the first round only two shots separated the top five. After lunch in the Club they headed out to play the second round and the top two players after 12 holes were young Aodhaghán Brady and Sean McLoughlin. Both were having a fantastic final round at 2 under par and 4 under par for the round respectively. They were closely followed by Jack Flanagan and Luke Harrison. Both of our leaders ran into some difficulties on 14 and 15 and standing on the 16th Tee Aodhaghán Brady held a slender advantage over his closest three rivals. Magnificent birdies on the 16th and 18th gave Aodhaghán the Title which he has retained now for the second year in a row. This is an excellent feat for one of the stars of our Junior Programme. To show how well Aodhaghán played on the day after a very poor start to his opening round he stood up on the 6th Tee in Bomore, possibly thinking that his race had been run, but from there to the 18th green on the Championship Course he played in a gross one under par for those remaining holes, which was deserving of the Title on the day. Once again, as Junior Convenor I would like to thank the Members of the Club for their continuous support of our Junior Programme and facilitating our Saturday competitions, especially on the Bomore Course. Shane Flanagan Junior Convenor Aodhagan Brady - Winner of Sean Fallon Cup
