MESSAGE FROM DR DANNY JORDAAN President of the South African Football Association This year’s Cyprus Cup has some added impetus in the sense that it will be used mostly to fine tune the squad that will play at the FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019™ in June. All the players know that this is an excellent opportunity to impress the coach before the kick-off of the biggest global showpiece for women’s football. The Cyprus Cup affords Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis and her technical team an opportune time to finetune the squad ahead of the World COME Cup. The Sasol-sponsored Banyana Banyana have been on a high SHOW since they finished runners-up to Nigeria at the CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana last December. YOUR Banyana Banyana’s strong showing against European power- L VE houses the Netherlands and Sweden last month in Cape Town is a clear testimony that going forward, any team that meets our women, regardless of its ranking or reputation, will be in for a showdown. FOR FOR Never has Banyana Banyana arrived at the Cyprus Cup in such high spirits. Last year was our best showing ever at this NELSON ALBERTINA invitational tournament and this year the new format means that each and every country can challenge for the trophy – MANDELA SISULU previously, only select groups in the tournament could fight for the gold medal. And what makes this assignment even more interesting is the fact that most of the players are playing at their highest level and are on top of their game. 2018 - 2019: CENTENARY of MADIBA It is no coincidence that everything seems to be coming together for this team that has been a cohesive unit for such & MAMA ALBERTINA'S BIRTHDAYS a long time now. Banyana Banyana won back-to-back COSAFA Championship titles (Southern Africa region) before going to the Women’s AFCON where they did not lose a match in regulation time (the final was lost on penalties). South Africans are very excited about this team and have the right to believe that something big and special is in the offing. Good luck to each and everyone of you!
