Corpus Christi Sunday June 19, 2022 Living Mass Intentions for the Week OLPH: Prendergast Family, Francis & Janice Henkel, Doug & Nicole Jones, Carlene Schuhler, Anita Vaessen, Michael & Brenda Vaessen SMA: Robert Hahn, Gene & Patricia Bronge, Peg Jones St. Patrick: Danielle Ledbetter, Indian Bickett
From the Gusset The archangel Gabriel told the Blessed Virgin that her barren kinswoman (Elizabeth) was already 6 months pregnant ± for nothing is impossible for God. Mary quickly went and spent the next 3 months helping Elizabeth until John the Baptist was born. The Catholic Church has always placed John’s birth in late June ± the 24th. Outside of Jesus’ birth (December 25th) and Mary’s birth (September 8th) ± John’s Nativity is the only birth that the Church celebrates! We celebrate the death date of all the other Saints of Heaven (their birthday into Heaven) ± but John’s is the only birthday we celebrate, and his we celebrate as a high Feast day called a Solemnity! An interesting thing happens this year. The Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is always celebrated the 2nd Friday after Pentecost, which happens to fall on the 24th of June this year. Since there are greater and lesser Solemnities ± the Sacred Heart Solemnity trumps the Nativity of John the Baptist’s Solemnity, and bumps John’s Feast Day to Thursday, June 23rd. This is fascinating to liturgical nuts like Fr. Randy. You see, a Solemnity is so important ± we cannot “not” celebrate a Solemnity that is trumped by a greater Solemnity. In other words, we must celebrate the birth of John the Baptist ± we cannot just say well this year, because of the Sacred Heart Solemnity, we just won’t have a Feast of John’s birth. In fact, the Solemnity of John’s Nativity is so great it even has a Vigil Mass associated with it. This is the Mass (the Vigil) where the Faithful are encouraged to go home and light their own St. John’s Fire. So, on Wednesday evening the 22nd of June at 7:00pm, we will celebrate the Vigil of the Solemnity of St. John the Baptist ± then we will go home with blessed candles to start our own St. John’s fire in the grill or firepit in our backyard, and we will also receive a special sacramental to celebrate St. John’s birth. Remember, St. Zechariah (John’s Dad) said, “You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High; for you (John) will go before the Lord to prepare His way, to give His people knowledge of salvation by the forgiveness of their sins.” John the Baptist is so great, we give him all of the fanfare he rightly deserves. Just think it is only 6 more months until Jesus is born! We want God the Father to see us joyfully anticipating the birth of His Son. When God looks down from Heaven and sees the night of June 22nd (this year) ablaze with campfires, as we thank God for sending us John the Baptist²the light that breaks the darkness in which we dwell²we desire to have God well pleased with us, His adopted children. It doesn’t get much better than this for us Catholics in Lee county, as we will celebrate 4 consecutive Solemnities from June 23rd through June 27th ± the Nativity of John the Baptist, the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and Our Lady of Perpetual Help’s Feast Day! Yours on the Path Fr. Randy

Questions on Your Catholic Faith What is the Earliest One Can Celebrate a Vigil Mass? In Seminary, the Faculty wanted us to celebrate a “ClassMass” each semester. We celebrated Mass as a community; that is, all four years of Seminarians (1st Theology through 4th Theology) every day. But to build camaraderie with the men whose ordination year we would share for the rest of eternity ± the Faculty wanted us to celebrate a ClassMass. I remember, we were going to have the Mass on Saturday, but since my classmates and I attended two different schools ± the Gregorian University, which honored a split weekend (they had Thursdays and Sundays off), while the Angelicum University had the more typical Saturday and Sunday weekend off ± we couldn’t decide on a time. The Angelicum students did not want to wake up early and have Mass on a Saturday morning (their day off), so we were going to hold the Mass on Saturday afternoon. We thought maybe 4:00pm. Well, the House Liturgist recommend that we just celebrate the anticipatory Mass for Sunday (or what we call the Vigil). Instead of celebrating a Saturday ClassMass ± we would celebrate a Sunday ClassMass. Pope Pius XII in his Apostolic Constitution, Christus dominus, set the earliest hour for a Vigil Mass at 4:00pm. Until the Church issues a new rule regarding when to officially define “evening” the 4:00pm Mass remains the earliest time a Mass is considered to fulfill the next day’s obligation. This is actually in Canon 1248. Attending a Vigil Mass fulfills the Catholic Sunday obligation. Now, some Solemnities actually have their own prayers and readings for the Vigil of the Solemnity, which differ from the actual Solemnity Mass’ prayers and readings. Although when one attends a Vigil Mass of a Solemnity, he fulfills his obligation for the Solemnity ± Solemnities that have their own Vigil with different prayers and readings than the next day ± are actually opportunities for the more zealous Faithful to actually celebrate the day with greater devotion. For example, if you have a devotion to St. John the Baptist (next week); perhaps, you would come to Mass on the Vigil and attend Mass on the Solemnity of the Nativity of John, or if you had a devotion to St. Peter or St. Paul (two weeks hence) you might come to the Vigil and the Solemnity Mass as well. You see, the rules of the Church are mostly there to ensure that we do the bare minimum to grow in holiness. There are a lesser number of rules concerning the maximum we can do. For instance, how many times can I receive the Eucharist in one day? We will answer that question next week. We are all called to be in love with Jesus Christ, but the deeper we fall in love with God (or any person for that matter) the more we want to show our Beloved our love. That is why the priest does not break the Commandment not to work on Sunday; whenever, he celebrates the Mass, because the Mass is a labor of love!
