To our staff, for all of your ongoing dedication and commitment to ensuring our students are successful each and every day - thank you! As well, for all of the unique opportunities you have provided for our students to experience this year from strings concerts to sports. To our students who have worked so hard to excel in their studies, we thank you for all you have done to make Jamieson such a special place. For all of your hard work as playground buddies, safety patrol members, cone heads, morning announcers, library monitors, equipment monitors and so much more – thank you! To our parent community - I would like to thank all of you for your contributions to student learning at Jamieson, whether it is driving students for field trips or fundraising to provide vibrant learning opportunities for students. All those wonderful opportunities were because of this community and our PAC. The parent support for children at Jamieson is outstanding! Also, I would like to express our thanks and appreciation to the PAC for the wonderful ‘Staff Appreciation Breakfast and Lunch’ held on Friday, May 31st. This kind of event requires collaboration, cooperation as well as a commitment of time and hard work. Thank you to all for making this so special. So – thank you students, parents, and staff for such a wonderful school year. We are thankful for all that you do to positively contribute to our learning environment. Special thanks to Ms. Tang and Ms. Thorburn who keep our school office welcoming and running smoothly all year long. Have a safe and happy summer, everyone. Remember to keep your child or children reading as well as involved in meaningful activities during the summer. The last full day of classes will be on Thursday, June 27th (regular school hours). We look forward to seeing all of you on Tuesday, September 3rd. Sincerely, Ms. Natasha Miladinovic

STRINGS Over the past few weeks the Jamieson community has had the pleasure of seeing and hearing just how hard the Strings students work. On May 15th the Seniors performed for us at Magee Secondary. On June 5th the Juniors performed in our gym. Both concerts had a Japanese theme and included the national anthem of Japan, music from Japanese television shows, and original music composed by some of our own Jamieson students. It was great, not just to listen to the wonderful music, but also be entertained by the clever snippets of Japanese culture, such as the busy commuters on trains, and a visit from Godzilla! A big thank you to the Strings students and Mr. Colpitts for your passion and dedication! On May 13th, Division 11, with the help of many parent volunteers, celebrated the First Nation’s culture by preparing several dishes. They made Haida Halibut Soup, Denesuline Pemmican Cakes, Salish Soap Berry Ice Cream, Luskikan (Mi’kmaq Bread), Inuit Bannock, Cree Moose Stew, Sioux Fry Bread, Blackfoot Fried Yeast Bread, Double Corn Bread Muffins (Eastern Woodlands), Three Sisters Soup (Eastern Woodlands), and they enjoyed smoked salmon. In the spirit of the First Nation’s culture, we gave thanks to the plants and animals that provided us with this food, we waited respectfully as our elders ate first, and we shared our feast with the staff. It was a memorable event for all. We also acknowledged that we were having this feast on the unceded territory of the Squamish, Musqueam, and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations. TRACK AND FIELD On Tuesday, May 28 over ninety Jamieson athletes from grades 4-7 arrived at Churchill Secondary ready to compete in a district-wide track and field meet against students from 12 other schools. Prepared for rain or shine, we got a bit of both. Clouds and cool breezes prevailed around until early afternoon; heat and blazing sun completed the day, but the weather did nothing to hinder our students’ enthusiasm. From shot put, long and high jump to all running track events, Jamieson showed heart, sportsmanship, determination, and an overall school spirit of which they should be proud. The teachers, families, and volunteers that supported the athletes over the last several weeks were extremely impressed with their attitude, perseverance, and effort. It was one of many track and field meets this year where a good time and friendly competition was shared by all. Great work Jamieson! Mrs. Kathleen Schepers, UBC Teacher Candidate A big thank you to all our staff who coached our track and field team this year: Ms. Grassi, Ms. Cvekic, Ms. Hsieh, Ms. Lam, Ms. Leung, Ms. Fujita, Ms. Lin, Ms.Chan (Teacher Candidate), Ms. Schepers (Teacher Candidate) and Ms. Crawford (Teacher Candidate). A very special thank you to Ms. Joe as she was our Track and Field Zone Coordinator! We would also like to thank the parent volunteers who provided lunch to our students.
POLLINATORS Division 13 has been busy demonstrating social responsibility for our urban community by helping local pollinators! Last month, we started learning about pollinators – like hummingbirds, bees and bats – and we realized that their populations are decreasing every year. We wanted to do something to support these helpful creatures and our environment, so we decided to plant a small Pollinator Garden full of their favourite flowers! We researched which specific flowers to grow, we blueprinted our ideas for the garden and then we completed the planting last week. This week, we made observations about the types of pollinators that visited our garden and we are pleased with the results so far. Here are some observations from our Entomologists-In-Training: SUMMER EXPERIENCE 2019 Please note that Registration for Summer School is open! Students in grades K – 12 currently attending a school in BC need a Personal Education Number (PEN) to register. Please consult the VSB Summer Experience website for more information.
