In June we will be celebrating our 30th Summer Reading Program here at the library! Summer Reading he is one of my favorite programs we do each year and From t "Oceans of Possibilities" is going to be one of the best. Our k o f Des library and other Tennessee libraries are a part of the ittany Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP) which is a Mrs. Br nonprofit charitable organization that supports literacy, education and science through summer reading events in public libraries across the United States. CSLP began in 1987 when ten Minnesota regional library systems developed a summer library program for children: choosing a theme, creating artwork and selecting incentives that libraries in the region could purchase and use. State libraries and systems continue to join and CSLP continues to evolve, but its guiding principle remains the same, librarians sharing ideas, expertise and costs to produce a high-quality summer reading program for all. I am so excited to see everyone back in the library for this year's Summer Reading Program: "Oceans of Possibilities". Mrs. Brittany M. West, Director . The 75th annual Strawberry Festival will be May 9th-14th. Some events, such as the pageant and Distinguished Young Woman, are happening before and after the main week of festivities. The origin of the Tennessee Strawberry Festival can be found on May 24th, 1947, in downtown Dayton, Tennessee. First started as a one-day festival sponsored by the Dayton City Lion’s Club, the festival had humble and passionate beginnings. Taking its name from Rhea County’s premier crop of the early 20th century, it was not long before it became a county-wide affair. Soon this festival of strawberries, sunshine and square dancing grew to include local attractions, bands, and public figures of all kinds. The Strawberry Parade drew thousands to see the magnificent creations on display. This year's festival will have all your favorite activities, and new this year, a strawberry ice cream eating contest. If you see a staff member working an event make sure to say "Hello". Be sure to attend the parade to see the library's "Oceans of Possibilities" float. We look forward to seeing everyone out and about at this year's festival. May is Get Caught Reading Month! Share the joy of getting lost in a good book with your children. It's a gift that will last a lifetime! Get Caught Reading is a nationwide campaign that was started in 1999 by the American Association of Publishers. Its goal is to remind people of all ages how much fun it is to read. Teachers, librarians and parents across the country plan reading activities online and in many communities to celebrate. "Reading is exploring the world without ever leaving your chair!" says Tina Jordan, Vice President of the Association of American Publishers. "And the earlier you start, the smarter you'll be while having fun at the same time."
Do you need a Tennessee Boat Certificate? Any Tennessee resident born after January 1, 1989,and over the age of 12 must show the TWRA-issued wallet Boating Safety Education Certificate as proof of successful completion of the TWRA Boating Safety exam. Need Help? The library has "Boat Tennessee" study books available and we are a certified testing site. After studying the boating safety material, you must first purchase a Type 600 boating safety exam permit from any business (license agent) that sells hunting and fishing licenses. If you have any questions, please ask a staff member, We hope everyone has a fun and safe summer! AAPI month originated with Congress in 1978. Then-president Jimmy Carter started a week-long celebration in the first week of May. Over the next decade, presidents passed annual proclamations renewing the idea that we need to celebrate Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders for this week-long period. Then in 1990, Congress passed a law that expanded the observance of this week into a month-long event, and in 1992 Congress passed a law that designated the whole month of May as AAPI Heritage Month. The staff has selected materials for the display bookcase including adult, young adult and juvenile to help celebrate the rich heritage of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.
