At CHMS, we are taking PAGES 03-07 the time to recognize the sacrifices, contributions and achievements of African Americans. This month-long recognition allows us to reflect upon CHMS Reminders the past and help build a better future. We will be shining a light on some of PAGE 08 the stories, voices and accomplishments that belong in our classrooms and Student of the Month curriculum. We are committed to the work to continually bring not only this history to the forefront, but also to ensure that all of our students see PAGE 09 themselves within our curriculum and community. February: Black History Month We will be celebrating Black History Month by highlighting the contributions made by African Americans in our country. During our announcements each morning, students will learn about a mixture of historical and current African American figures that have made a positive impact on society. Cursive Club Over the last year, one of the popular trends on TikTok and Instagram has been handwriting! There are tons of videos of individuals demonstrating their calligraphy and cursive skills. Mrs. Kuzdzal discovered that many of our students wanted to learn how to write in cursive, so she has started an informal cursive club! Check out their great work below! Freeze Challenge We are celebrating the winter weather this month with a "Freeze Challenge." Each day, Mrs. Alterio or Mr. Christie will call a "freeze" in the building. Teachers will look around the room and determine if all students are properly wearing their masks when the "freeze" is called. If so, the class is entered to win a prize! We are also delivering daily prizes to winning classrooms. We have a big treat for our overall winner in February. Hint: the prize may or may not involved Mrs. Alterio and Mr. Christie being covered in ice! PAGE 03
Team Spirit: Bills Edition Leading up until the playoffs, Mrs. Peters and our art students were busy creating a Bills mural/locker magnet display. We were hoping the mural would bring good luck to the team, but unfortunately, the Chiefs had other plans for us! The mural will be a good luck charm for when we go to the Super Bowl (and win) next year! "Compliments of the Kind Club" Bulletin Board Take a look at our Kindness Club bulletin board for the month of January. Students were encouraged to "take what they needed" from the board. The board displayed compliments and positive affirmations for students. PAGE 04
Academic Challenge Bowl Academic Challenge Bowl had their first meet against Hamburg and West Seneca last month. During the meet, our team was able to demonstrate their academic wisdom by answering some very tough trivia questions! Our team will have another meet later this month. Interested in joining the club? Please see Mrs. Sullivan! Clark, Bradley, Christopher Nathan, Krishmat, Lilyana and Reagan, Brayden, Ella and Jax. and Abigail. Michael. Welcome Miss. Waldron Mrs. Balthasar, our school counselor, is out on leave for a few weeks. While she is gone, Ms. Waldron will be filling in at CHMS! Some of the 8th graders may remember Ms. Waldron because she was Mrs. Balthasar’s intern two years ago during the 2019-20 school year. Students may stop down to see Ms. Waldron to discuss their grades and/or any other issues or concerns! Please give her a big Eagle welcome! You can reach Ms. Waldron via email at: ewaldron@clevehill.org. 6th Grade ELA Students in Ms. Bruno's ELA class completed a "Gallery Walk" as a pre-reading activity for their next novel, The Watsons Go to Birmingham - 1963. Students traveled to different stations throughout the classroom and, while staying socially distant, wrote "I Notice, I Wonder" statements about the images related to the book. Keep up the good work! PAGE 05
Back in the "Normal" Swing of Things: Tech Wars It was great to return from the one year hiatus, (due to COVID regulations) to attend the annual Tech Wars competition. The last time students were able to attend was in January 2020 and students were practically begging to return! Those who attended were given a much needed chance to expand their skills. Middle School students entered several competitions: small bridges, CO2 cars, mousetrap cars, Vex-robots, and the on site engineering challenge. With hundreds of entries, we were short of the top awards, however, the experience was rewarding for all. In the post competition meeting, students shared that they would love to return to Tech Wars. “Growth Mindset” has been embedded in the school curriculum at the Hill that the students' attitudes are extremely positive and they are striving for success like never before. Not obtaining a trophy is not a sign of failure; but can be the start of achievement and success! Thanks to the funding received from our district, we were able to enter our first ever VEX Robotics Competition and the results were very encouraging. Students gained a great deal of experience and spent the day learning from other schools and judges and walked away from TECH WARS with an excitement and eagerness to grow this program. Overall, we had students in a wide variety of competitions and as educators it was inspiring to watch the students so excited and involved in so many aspects of Technology. Thanks to Mr. McNess and Mr. Schiesser for submitting these photos and the article! The entire team at the conclusion of the day (middle and high school students) PAGE 06

MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENT OF THE MONTH January 2022 Grade 7: Kevin Brunner Kindness is one of the most important qualities that a person can have. People that are kind demonstrate this quality in both what they do and say. Kevin Brunner, the 7th grade selection for Student of the Month, truly shows kindness regularly, without any expectation of being recognized for doing so. His positive attitude and disposition make everyone’s day a little brighter. He assists his teachers with passing out materials, fixing technology issues, and responds to requests for help from his peers. Kevin’s teachers described him as being someone who seeks opportunities to improve himself each day. He is enthusiastic about his academic progress and consistently takes pride in what he does by giving his all. Kevin is not afraid to try new things, learn from his mistakes, and maintain a growth mindset which will serve him well as he continues his academic career. Setbacks are temporary for Kevin, because he uses them to move forward and become a better version of himself. He takes an active role in his learning, participating in class with insightful ideas. Kevin’s work ethic was a consistent quality identified by nearly all of his teachers. He listens to the advice and feedback of his teachers and applies this to the challenges presented to him. He is the first student to arrive at his classes and always prepared for learning. Kevin has an amazing personality as well. Aside from being kind and helpful, he has an outstanding sense of humor. Kevin is a joy to be around, not only for what he does, but for who he is. This is a young man with integrity and a strong moral compass. All of Kevin’s teachers mentioned that he is an excellent role model for his peers. He is also a member of the bowling team, where he takes the initiative to help less experienced teammates. Although his commitment to the team is extensive, Kevin easily balances both the athletic and academic demands of his time. He leads by example and demonstrates the qualities of what it means to be a student and athlete at Cleveland Hill. Kevin is everything and more of what his teachers ask him to be. It is an absolute pleasure to have him as a member of the 7th grade this school year. Teachers expressed that they are thankful for Kevin and what he does to make school a better place. He is an outstanding student, person, and role model. The 7th grade team is honored to choose Kevin to represent the entire grade level as Student of the Month. Kevin, congratulations on earning this recognition and keep up the great work! PAGE 09
