Summer Enrichment Courses Offered as a partnership between the Woodbridge Township School District and the Woodbridge Recreation Department This year, there are a variety of courses offered, including in-person and remote options as indicated in course descriptions. Tuition amounts listed are per 5-day class for one student. Instructors will communicate in-person meeting locations and online meeting links prior to the course start. All in-person participants will be required to follow mask and social distancing guidelines. All in-person sessions will be offered at Avenel Middle School AM Sessions 9:00am – 11:30am PM Sessions 12:00noon – 2:30pm Registration begins Monday May 3, 2021 Classes open to Woodbridge Township Residents Register early, space is limited and is on a first come first serve basis. Week 1 – July 26-30, Avenel Middle School and Remote Rise of the Robots Returns!!! In-person Forget Battlebots! In this class you will build your own robots! Students will receive an introduction to Robotics. They will be using Lego Mindstorms NXT Robot kits to build and program robots to compete against other students in races and other competitions. Students must bring an open and creative mind. May the best robot win! Note: Students in this class will be organized into small groups, or pods, in which they will share materials and work closely together with group members. Different groups will remain distanced from one another. Since they are working in pods, students in this class will not be permitted to take another in-person class during this week or for the following two weeks. They may take a remote class concurrently . This class will meet in the AMS Cafeteria and students will enter through Door #20. Instructor: Mr. Hoyer currently teaches Robotics at Woodbridge High School. He is in his 22nd year of teaching in Woodbridge Township. In addition to Robotics, he has taught 7th Grade Life Science, 8th Grade Physical Science, Integrated Science, Earth Science, Oceanography and Astronomy. #001 AM session – entering Grades 4-8 Tuition: $100 Maximum enrollment: 20 Imagine! Write! Publish! Remote This class is designed to foster creativity, self-expression and excitement about the writing process using Bookemon to create a beautiful published book as a keepsake. Instructor: Mrs. Sweeney has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Literature & a Master’s Degree in Administration & Supervision. She has been teaching in Woodbridge Township for 20 years, 13 years as a middle school Language Arts Teacher, 2 years in high school English, and 5 years as a Gifted & Talented Enrichment Teacher. Ms. Sweeney is also a mother to three sons, ages 9, 12 & 15. #002 AM session – entering Grades 2-7 Tuition: $115 (inclusive of published book) Maximum enrollment: 20
Week 1 Continued Arf! The Musical In-Person Welcome to Doggie Town! What's not to love about a town full of pooches who all have talent to share and to spare? This is a musical with a strictly canine cast; well, at least a cast that plays nothing but canines. The children get to perform the show from a dog's perspective and feel the thrills of competing in a dog pageant. Arf! is based off the Westminster Dog Show in New York City. For the class, please have your child bring pants/shorts and a shirt in the colors of tan, white, gray, black, or red. Any choice of those colors will work. They will also need a pair of white socks. Students will learn and perform a show in a week’s time. At the end of the week, students will get to put on a performance for their friends and family, outdoors or through video. This class will meet in AMS band room and will enter through Door #15 (rear of side parking lot). Instructor: Ms. Avner is the general music/choir director at Oak Tree Road Elementary School. She is a graduate of Temple University and has been teaching music since 2014. It is Ms. Avner’s passion to inspire young minds through music and perfor- mance. While teaching, Ms. Avner has directed many plays and musicals, such as the full production of Oliver, and has also led a multitude of choirs, with the addition of handbells. Ms. Avner looks forward to providing an en- riching summer music experience. #003 AM session – entering Grades K-3 Tuition: $100 Maximum enrollment: 10 It’s a Hit! A Musical of Innings and Winnings! In-Person “What's more American than baseball? What could be more fun than a musical celebrating sportsmanship, teamwork, problem solving and winning and losing with dignity and class? A new girl in town has joined the boys baseball team. No problem. But wait! She wants to be the pitcher! That has never been done before in this town! Through five innings, the cast plays the parts of favorite baseball players through history, and learns how to be true All-Stars whether the score shows a win or a loss.” Students should bring a baseball cap. Students will learn and perform a show in one week’s time. At the end of the week, students will put on a performance for their friends and family outdoors or through video. Week 1 Continued Harry Potter Camp Remote New adventures await you at this year’s Harry Potter Camp with all NEW remote activities! Get ready to enjoy a variety of STEAM activities, games, projects, and magical surprises! No matter what “year” Hogwarts student you are, this is the camp for you! Expecto Patronum! (You will enjoy this camp whether you have read the books or not!) A kit of supplies will be provided for use at home. Instructor: Ms. Quinn is a graduate of Kean University where she earned a double major in K-8 Education and English. She is currently the Gifted and Talented Creative Writing/Theatre Arts teacher for grades 3-8. Ms. Quinn was awarded Woodbridge Gifted and Talented Teacher of the Year in 2015 and Mawbey Street School Teacher of the Year in 2007. She is an avid reader and has travelled extensively throughout England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland. Ms. Quinn looks forward to sharing her love of all things Harry Potter with students this summer! #005 PM session – entering Grades 3-8 Tuition: $90 Maximum enrollment: 20 Trivia Frenzy Quiz Show Challenge Camp Remote Do you watch Jeopardy and enjoy trivia? Then this is the session for you! Gain an extraordinary amount of knowledge that may even stump your parents, and have fun doing it! This class will teach strategies for success in academic competitions. Instructor: Mrs. Azar currently teaches 4th and 5th grade Gifted & Talented Enrichment and PEG in Woodbridge. She earned a Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Connecticut. Mrs. Azar loves incorporating technology, teaching outside-the-box lessons, and encouraging students to create and follow through with goals. This is Mrs. Azar's 13th year teaching. A lover of sports, the beach, amusement parks and learning new things, you can find Mrs. Azar going on adventures with family or relaxing at home cooking new meals. #006 PM session – entering Grades 3-8 Tuition: $75 Maximum enrollment: 20 Body Science Pre-Med Camp Remote For the young student intrigued by science and body systems, and maybe an aspiring doctor, this class will explore the skeletal, muscular, respiratory, digestive and circulatory systems. Students will learn about one body system each day and will create a hands-on craft/model for each body system studied. A kit of supplies will be provided for use at home. Instructor: Ms. Miller teaches Math, Language Arts, Social Studies, Science and Life Skills at Colonia Middle School. In addition, Ms. Miller is a co-advisor of the Community Service Club. #007 PM session – entering Grades 1-3 Tuition: $100 Maximum enrollment: 20
Week 1 Continued American Sign Language for Beginners Hybrid — In-person class with an option to join remotely from home We will be learning American Sign Language this summer through dramatic play and role-play activities for everyday encounters. Students will develop their sign language skills through arts and crafts, music, games, and story-telling. This class may also serve as a fun introduction and primer for students who intend to study ASL as a world language requirement in high school. Class will meet in AMS Room 303 and will enter through Door #3. Students may pick up supplies if they are joining from home. Instructor: Born, raised, and educated in Canada, Mrs. Tan has been dedicated to bridging the communication gap between the Deaf and hearing communities for over 30 years. She holds multiple degrees in education including a specialty in teaching the Deaf and American Sign Language. Mrs. Tan has had the opportunity to teach on three different continents in multiple settings and has taught both Deaf and hearing students in all grades from Pre-K through University and beyond. In addition to her career as a teacher, Mrs. Tan is a professional interpreter for the Deaf specializing in medical, educational, and religious interpretation. She is also a swimming coach/instructor specializing in stroke analysis. When not teaching or interpreting, Mrs. Tan enjoys long distance cycling, swimming, and playing with her large dogs. #008 AM session – entering Grades 2-5 #009 PM session – entering Grades 6-10 Tuition: $100 Maximum enrollment: 10 iMovie Madness In-person Welcome to iMovie Madness, where we explore the (fade) ins and (fade) outs of the apple program iMovie. Students enrolled in this class will have the opportunity to shoot, edit, master, and share their iMovie creations. Projects include a slide show project and a movie project. No experience needed, bring your director's chair and an idea! Class will meet in the AMS media center and will enter through Door #2. Instructor: Mr. Competello is the general music teacher/ choir director at Avenel Middle School. He received his BA in music education with a focus in conducting and composition at Kean University in 2015. He is also a member of "Little Kids Rock!" which trains music educators in using music kids love to teach them music! Mr. Competello is a tech guru at AMS and enjoys using technology to enhance instruction. #010 AM session – entering Grades 4-8 Tuition: $100 Maximum enrollment: 10
Week 1 Continued Paint Like a Famous Artist Remote Students will learn about a famous artist and apply his or her style, characteristics, or compositional approach in order to create a 16” x 20” canvas acrylic painting each day. Students will follow the instructor in a very easy step by step procedure, making a first-time painter feel at ease. Each lesson will also be designed so that even the experienced painter can work at his or her own level to challenge themselves through technique. Each day students will complete a 16x20 canvas acrylic painting. A kit of supplies will be provided for use at home. Instructor: Ms. Tobia is a graduate of Monmouth University. She is certified in Art K-12 and Elementary Education K-8. Ms. Tobia has been an Art teacher in Woodbridge for 16 years. She currently teaches Art at School #18 and School #29. #011 AM session – entering Grades 3-6 Tuition: $100 (inclusive of art supplies) Maximum enrollment: 20 Disney Summer Sing-along In-person Who doesn’t LOVE Disney songs?! Students will learn songs from favorite Disney movies and shows culminating in a performance for friends and family at the end of the week. Performance may be outdoors or on video. Instructor: Ms. Minucci is a graduate of Marywood University where she received a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education with major instruments flute and voice. Ms. Minucci has been teaching in Woodbridge Township School District for 32 years, 29 of those years at Indiana Avenue School #18. Ms. Minucci enjoys hearing students' voices mature over a period of 6 years at the elementary level and loves to see students’ eyes light up when they sing Disney songs. #012 AM Session -- entering Grades 3-6 Tuition: $100 Maximum Enrollment: 10
Week 2 – August 16-20, Avenel Middle School and Remote HATS! The Musical! In-person This fun musical is all about showing off your personality with a hat! It doesn't matter what you wear on your head, but what is in your heart. This clever musical sings about all different types of hats and how it portrays different personalities. It is not about the hat that you wear on your head; it's about how you feel underneath. This rhyming musical includes dancing, singing and acting to teach about what is truly important in life. The hat starts the musical, but quickly makes its way to your heart. Your child should bring a hat to camp. Students will learn and perform a show in a weeks time. At the end of the week, students will get to put on a performance for their friends and family outdoors or through video. But wait! What's that noise I hear under my bed? Where's my teddy bear? See how bedtime can really be a blast in this creative and cozy 20-minute musical play for the primary grades.” Students will learn and perform a show in one week’s time. They will get to wear pajamas, bring stuffed animals, and create a wonderful show for their friends and family outdoors or through video. This class will meet in AMS band room and will enter through Door #15 (rear of side parking lot). Instructor: Ms. Avner is the general music/choir director at Oak Tree Road Elementary School. Through literacy activities and research-based lessons, students will learn about problems in the community and participate in related service learning projects. Each of us has the power to make a difference in the world through education and action. Join us for a week of spreading love and kindness while learning and having fun. Students will earn up to 5 hours of community service for participation in this course. Instructor: Ms. Timinski has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Teacher of the Handicapped and a Master ’s Degree in Educational Media Specialization. She has been a Special Education teacher in Woodbridge for over 20 years and is currently working as the District Media Specialist. Ms. Timinski is also a mother to 3 children, ages 28, 12, and 7. #016 PM session – entering Grades 3-7 Tuition: $75 Maximum enrollment: 20
Week 2 Continued Guitar Hero! In-Person In this class, students will learn the basics of guitar. This includes how to take care of the instrument, how to tune it, and how to play it! Kids will also have the opportunity to play songs they know and love today! Instructor: Mr. Competello is the general music teacher/ choir director at Avenel Middle School. Each class there will be a new theme where students will follow the instructor in a very easy step by step procedure. Students will explore different techniques and complete a 16X20 canvas painting each day. This class is designed for beginner and intermediate painters. Week 2 Continued Forensic Detectives: CSI Summer Camp Remote Forensic Detectives CSI Sumer Camp aims to develop interest in forensic science. By using investigative techniques and scientific methods, junior detectives will learn how to solve the mysteries behind crime scenes. In general, CSI camp focuses on evidence collection such as fingerprints, shoe imprints, teeth mark impressions, handwriting analysis, and more. There will be opportunities to solve crime puzzles using the skills that the detectives have acquired from the camp. PM session (older students) may also explore sample blood type testing as well as forensic geology and the use of insects and plants. A list of necessary materials will be provided before camp starts. Instructors: Mrs. Azar currently teaches 4th and 5th grade Gifted & Talented Enrichment and PEG in Woodbridge. This class is open to all High School Students with ASL1 or ASL2 experience.
