The DGE E EXPRESS JANUARY 2021 Christmas Cheer Conquers COVID 2020 has been a rollercoaster of a year. For nine months, we’ve faced unforeseen challenges, setbacks, restrictions and lockdowns caused by the COVID-19 global pandemic. At times, it has been difficult to find the positives among the sea of growing negatives. In spite of the challenges, we continue to hear stories of people coming together and finding ways to give back during these unique circumstances. HEROS Hockey is a volunteer-driven organization that uses the game of hockey to teach life-skills and to empower marginalized youth. Over the last six years, the Edge School Female Prep hockey team has built an incredible friendship with the Bowness HEROS by getting on the ice with them monthly and hosting the HEROS and their families at Edge every holiday season for some Christmas fun. Given all of the COVID restrictions this year, the two groups hadn’t been able to connect up until Dec. 15, when they found a way to keep the holiday tradition going in a COVID compliant way! “The one ask from HEROS when we first connected was that we be consistent in our efforts and show up for the kids,” says U18 Female Prep Head Coach, Carla MacLeod. “Even though we couldn’t get on the ice this year due to the restrictions, it was great to be able to still ensure they know we are thinking about them and we wanted to bring a smile to their faces this holiday season with some gifts.” The relationship between HEROS and the Edge School Female Prep hockey team is a reminder to us all that we can all still find ways to support our community, even through the craziness of COVID. “People speak about our team’s impact on the HEROS but what many do not realize is the positive impact that the kids have on us,” says Female Prep player, Island Bernard-Docker. That reciprocal benefit is a wonderful thing about giving back! Earlier in December, our U18 Prep team unloaded 1,250 Christmas trees at the IKEA parking lot in Deerfoot Meadows. Tree sales from this location benefited the Women In Need Society – an organization that supports vulnerable women, children and families in our city.
