AUTUMN GLOW Chrysanthemums & More! explores the interplay of light and shadow that define this year’s Autumn Glow theme. Throughout the gardens you’ll find chrysanthemums intermingled with other flora in radiant kaleidoscopes of color and hue. Illuminating the beauty of fall is the heart of Autumn Glow. Notice how low light softens textures and casts long shadows. See how certain leaves and plants seemingly glow from within. Peruse pathways aglow with vibrant plantings, their look and mood changing with the light.

GR ACE JARECKI SEASONAL DISPL AY GREENHOUSE Thoughtful incorporation of bromeliads, crotons and other tropical plants within the chrysanthemum displays beautifully celebrates Michigan’s quintessential warm autumn colors. These tropicals—not typical to our landscapes—create new ways to become immersed in the beauty of fall. As light moves throughout the conservatories, different plants, basking in the illumination, seem to radiate color from within. Luxuriating in the Autumn Glow becomes artfully reimagined as you stand beneath the central bromeliad sphere—vibrant with yellows and oranges. What elements resonate most deeply with your experience of fall’s beauty?
STUART AND BARBAR A PADNOS ROOF TOP SCULP TURE GARDEN As light changes throughout the day and the season, so do Autumn Glow experiences. Autumn’s low light softens textures and casts long shadows along the rooftop. The light paints tall, upright feather reed grass in contrast to the cascading goldenrod, together flowing through the center of the Padnos Rooftop Sculpture Garden. The careful observer will be rewarded with the joy of discovering subtle differences in light, shadow, form and texture, as Autumn Glow highlights the sculptures, native trees, perennials and sedums in new ways throughout the exhibition. How might moving light, morning to evening, season to season, alter your perception of this space?
FREY BOARDWALK Observe nature’s golden hour while strolling the Frey Boardwalk. Enjoy the changing color of the fall canopy, from brilliant reds and oranges to soft yellows and warm browns. The shorter days and cooler temperatures of autumn initiate this seasonal change from green to brilliant color. This happens as chlorophyll, which makes leaves green and helps plants make food, breaks down to reveal other pigments. Carotenoids with warm yellows and oranges; anthocyanins with beautiful reds, pinks and purples —these pigments have been there all along. Color intensity varies yearly, as autumn’s hues and glow in the landscape continually amaze. How will the experience in this space change as the season unfolds?
MICHIGAN’S FARM GARDEN While chrysanthemums are the star, take some time to explore the More! Unique texture and color expressions delight throughout the garden. Swiss chard’s pink and yellow hues evoke the rising and setting sun. Distinct pumpkin and gourd varieties and colors catch the eye. The soft, flickering light of carved pumpkins in the Woodland Shade Garden beckons during Tuesdays at the Farm—a sure sign of fall. From Chrysanthemums to More!, these elements celebrate the beauty of autumn’s glow. How else do you experience autumn’s glow in the colors, textures and shapes you discover?
