During the first months of the Covid-19 pandemic, many people died alone in hospitals and nursing homes because their families could not be there to visit. Henry was just such a person. Though he never contracted the disease, he was in the early stages of organ failure and would soon slip into a coma. Before that, his nurses arranged a video call with his family. During the call, his children and grandchildren were upset and angry that he would die alone. However, they were surprised to see how calm and peaceful Henry himself was. While they were telling him how much they loved him and how much they wished they could be there with him, Henry said: “Don’t worry, I’m going to be alright.” One of his sons asked him what he meant, and he went on to explain: “I asked for the priest to come bring me communion, but the nurses told me that even priests were not allowed to come to the hospital because there wasn’t enough protective gear for them. But a nurse who is a Eucharistic minister came by yesterday with communion for me. Once I received Jesus, I knew He would be with me and that I would be alright.” Hearing that, his children and grandchildren stopped crying and a feeling of peace came over all of them. It was still painful not to be with him when he breathed his last, but they were consoled knowing that he was comfortable and at peace. Throughout the centuries, it has been a common practice to give a last communion to those who are dying. It is called “viaticum” which means “food for the journey”. Dying persons receive Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament to strengthen them to face their final moments and to guide their souls to their judgment and, hopefully, into their eternal reward. We should all make sure that our loved ones who are dying receive communion and we should let our family members know that we want the Anointing of the Sick and Viaticum before we lose consciousness. It will give us tremendous peace and consola- tion as we face the last moments of our lives. Another successful bocce season is in the books. We had some classic playoff action between Jersey Boys, Good- fellas, Gower’s Group and Fughedaboudit. Jersey Boys defeated Goodfellas in the first round. Fughedaboudit de- feated Gower’s Group by one point in a very close 3 game match. Jersey Boys defeated Fughedaboudit in the finals and captured their second consecutive summer championship.
Year of Saint Joseph The Virtues of Saint Joseph This year dedicated to St. Joseph allows us to consider his virtues as a model husband to the Blessed Virgin Mary as written of by Father Donald H. Calloway in his book Consecration to St. Joseph (Marian Fathers of the Immaculate Conception, 2020). Sacred Scripture calls St. Joseph the “husband of Mary” (Mt. 1:16,19). If God chose St. Joseph to marry Our Lady then he must have been the best of hus- bands. St. Joseph “took Mary his wife into his home” (Mt. 1:24). In obedience to the angel, St. Joseph received Mary with great humility as his wife. He provided a home for her and the Incarnate Son of God. He sacrificed willingly and joyfully for his wife and foster Child. He loved Mary and would do anything for her. He accompanied Mary to the census in Bethlehem, made provisions for the birth of the Christ, accom- panied his wife to the circumcision, the presentation in the temple and was at her side constantly until they found the 12 year-old Son of God in the temple. Wives flourish when their husbands support them. St. Joseph is an excellent model of constancy in love for his wife. St. Joseph is also a model of purity and complete command of his appetites. Tradi- tion tells us that he was a virgin before marriage and, certainly, during his marriage with the ever-virgin Mary. St. Joseph is a model for husbands in safeguarding the virtue of their wives. Even though married Christians do not take vows of virginity they nonetheless are responsible to guard their spouse’s dignity in dress, language, courtesy and sexual relations. St. Joseph teaches husbands how to be pure, chaste, modest and sacrificial toward their wives.
