April 2019 The Hornby Table Tennis Section celebrated their 50th Anniversary in March with a Jubilee.
PRESIDENT’S CORNER Hello Members, Colder weather is on its way, and the redevelopment is moving along steadily. Demolition has finished and the grounds have been completely cleared and are awaiting the next phase. It’s good to see so many of you supporting the club over this time. Your loyalty is truly appreciated, and we are doing all that we can to bring you as much entertainment, member promos and events as we always have. The Club Café has several specials running throughout the week, so you’re spoiled for choice really. Upstairs, the Sunday buffet has been going well and a Music & Meal night was introduced last month. The entertainment is free as always, but now there is an option to have a roast meal as well. On Friday the 12th we have Paul Madsen bringing us a tribute show - Bohemian Rhapsody. This should be a great night for those who enjoy the music of Queen. A certain Bunny will be here later in the month for his big day out on Sunday the 21st. The café will be running a kids lunch special on the day, so we hope to make it a family affair. Regards, Kevin Cole Renovation Progress Photo from April 1st

ALL SPORTS Please take note, our AGM on Monday the 15th of April will now start at 7:30pm. We have moved it back to accommodate the travel section AGM on the same night. Also, don’t forget the Les Griffiths evening on May 10th. Cheers, Darren Smith CARDS There has been a bit happening within our section since we restarted 2 months ago. We had a team of 8 play in the Clubs NZ South Island Euchre Tournament held at Papanui Club. There were 20 clubs participating. This was a well-run tournament and I’m pleased to say that Diane Heath and Derek Petch were the Pairs winners overall receiving the winning cup, a great victory for Hornby. The overall winner of the Steinlager Teams Trophy was Oamaru Club, a first time for them, since the inaugural tournament held in 1989. We had our 1st pair’s night in Feb, which is held on the last Thursday of each month. Members get to play with the same set partner for the night. We had 2 winning teams on the night, Glen Milne and Warren Grimwood & Helen James and Janne Mayo. Our next pair’s night is Thursday 28th March, followed by one on Thursday 25th April. We had the Eric Pycroft Trophy, which was originally started years ago as a Men vs Ladies night. We had 12 tables, with 48 players and a supper to finish off with. We did start off with confusion after the 1st table movement, but
with more numbers of ladies compared to number of men playing, we managed to overcome the challenge. Individual best scores on the night were 1st Anne Hepburn, and 2nd Cheryl Gianelly, followed by Bev Smith, Val Giddens and Ricky Winter all tied 3rd. We held a fun 6 handed tournament on a Saturday afternoon amongst ourselves as well, with 6 tables, 36 players. The winners on the day were Brent Berg, Jeanette Hosking and Max McBeth, 2nd John Churchill, Helen James, and Marcia Whaanga and 3rd Bev Bulmer, Cheryl Gianelly and Anne Hepburn. So, to this month, we have our normal Thursday nights, with a special Easter Theme night planned for Easter Thursday, April 18th with a chance to win a special Easter Raffle as well. I wish to remind members that our Annual AGM will be held on Thursday 2nd May at 7.30pm. We urge that everyone comes to this meeting and gives their input and feedback. We as a committee are only a small team, and we all give our time, so our members can come and enjoy a night of cards and any activities. After the AGM, we’ll have a few friendly card games, with supper to follow. Also at this point, we wish to thank those other section members that help out on a regular basis each Thursday night, with raffles, or setup/put away tables etc. We appreciate your help. We will be starting our Saturday Interclub Competition playing Euchre/ Crib on a Home Game and Away Game to our other local ChCh Clubs on Saturday 4th May thru to Saturday 3rd August. If you would like to be part of this, come and talk to us on a Thursday night. We will have a list up for names for those interested and Card Section Uniform Requirements.
It has been great to welcome our new members that have joined our section over the last few weeks. It can be quite daunting coming along for the first time, but I hope you feel okay once playing with us all. So just a reminder to our Hornby Members that have played for years, --when we have a new player, slow down and just give friendly guidance if need be, but don't scare them off.... We want these new members to feel welcome and want to come back. See you all on Thursday nights. Regards, Lorraine Cole CRIB We have been busy on Wednesday nights with some very good numbers of players turning up. To have 24 players competing, certainly makes for an enjoyable and competitive night. Over the month there has been a different winner each week which shows how even the games are or……. maybe it is just the luck of the cards! The offer is there to any Club Member who wishes to come along. You only need to be able to count to 31. The rest of the game is just as easy as that – guaranteed you will pick up the game quickly. You can even download an app to play against the computer or other people around the world. Looking forward to April, we have our AGM. Thanks to the committee for the work they have done for the section over the year. The section is extremely grateful. If any of the section members would like to join the committee their assistance would be most welcome. We also have our National Champs in Petone, Wellington on the 6th April. Twelve talented players will contest with around another 150 players from around New Zealand for the National singles and teams event. Good luck to all and we look forward to reporting on some winners next time! Finally, a couple of messages to our section members. It’s great to have Michael Gray playing with us again after a health scare. Good to see you fighting fit and also coming first one week, with your cheerful smile and positive approach to crib it is always a delight to meet across the pegging board. And our dear VP, Ricky Winter. One of our youngest member’s decided he should join some of our more senior member’s by declaring himself a sitter for a couple of nights after breaking a toe nail (or a little bone higher up). Ricky, your life as a flying winger in touch rugby has long gone. Stick to the crib board and move those pegs a little faster!! It is also of great sadness that we say goodbye to two lovely ladies who have played Crib for many years, Margaret Mills and June Scholes who both passed away earlier this year. All the Best from the Cribbage Crew
DARTS Welcome back to another year and what a great start we’ve had, returning from the South Islands with some new silverware for the cabinet (4 in total). The Mixed pairs were played on Wednesday with Craig & Sarah getting 5th equal. On Thursday we had the Ladies and Men’s Pairs Maata & Raewyn got to the last 16 in the Ladies, and in the Men’s Pairs it was an all Hornby final Mark & Lucas beating Warren & Craig. Then on Thursday night it was the Junior tournament which was won by Hornby Lachy Rountree. On Friday it was the Ladies singles with Vernaleigh getting 5th equal. Saturday was the Men’s singles and what a great effort from the Hornby boys with Mark, Lucas & Craig all getting 5th equal and Warren played in the final taking runner up. Craig Ross got the Men’s most “180” with a total of 10, and Hornby won the aggregate trophy. Saturday was a great night with the announcement of the South Island team and Hornby got 4 players in the team well done Vernaleigh, Sarah, Lucas and Mark. I would just like to say how proud I was of all the Hornby WMC & MSA dart players and supporters that attended the South Island tournament in Nelson and that you all did us proud. The winter round starts on the 3rd of April and we have 7 teams, good luck to you all. Regards, Andrea GOLF Eight golfers ventured north for the New Zealand Pairs Championship. Castlecliff golf course was the venue. Hopes were high after day one with Geoff Baldwin and Colin Ellison leading the field. But with 108 pairs playing that was there lot. Close behind them waiting to pounce was another Hornby team, consisting of Andrew Ataera and Young-Pyo-Hong- and that was that. They were gone. Day 3- All over red rover. The Pen Hawkins Rosebowl was won by
HORNBY Andrew and Young. A great effort and well deserved win to top off a good week for the lads from Hornby. Geoff, Colin, Andrew and Young were selected for the South Island team, which is a 6 man team so 4 out of 6 is a top effort. On the sections scene was a game at Waimak Gorge with overcast skies, but luckily no rain. The match of the day was the Sexton Trophy winners being Glenda-Kingi-Hazel and Ray Strange. Nearest to the pin for Ladies- Pam Brewer. Men’s- Wayne Grueber. Other major winners were Colin Ellison, Wayne Brewer and Jack-Kingi-Hazel. Our next game is at Tinwald against Ashburton on the 7th April, 10:30 start. If you are interested in having a game or joining the section we’re always taking new ladies & gentlemen, feel free to give Geoff a buzz on 02102935971 Cheers, The Big Fella FISHING We have just attended the Club’s New Zealand South Island Trout Fishing Tournament held at Rangiora RSA. This Club has undergone extensive renovations and we were treated to a fantastic weekend. Once again our Tony McGregor showed the way becoming second, with our junior Ryley Wilson picking up a prize. Our next outing is the Jack Elcock Memorial competition to be held on Lake Brunner. The Moana Hotel let us use their facilities and have donated a Trophy for Best Factor fish caught. This is the biggest outing for the Christchurch Fishing Interclub clubs. We have around 100 rods compete in this competition, hosted by Hornby Fishing Section. Saturday night in the Moana Hotel with prize giving, tall storytelling, eating good meals, washed down with your favourite drop, usually watching the rugby Crusaders v Brumbies at 5:15pm kick off this time. This is the last major fishing outing for us this season with winter fast approaching. Screaming Reels
INDOOR BOWLS The indoor bowls season is now underway. We had a great turnout on opening night and three new members joined. Ten members played in the first Canterbury tournament, Open Singles, last weekend. Two of our members reached the semi-finals - A good start to the season for our section. With a lot more competitions scheduled for April, it will be a busy month. Regards, David Philpott Greg Hill and Simon Thomas Canterbury Open Singles Semi-Finalists MID-WEEK BOWLS It has been a good month for our bowls group since our last report. On 12th March we had a day trip to Kaikoura which included a lovely lunch at Donegal House. It was an interesting trip as it gave passengers the opportunity to view all the incredible work that has been carried out on the highway since the earthquake. The bus was full and our members enjoy our periodic trips out and we plan to have more during the year. We have been getting very good attendance at our Tuesday afternoon bowls and it is pleasing to see new members enjoying our friendly games. If any club members are interesting in coming along on a Tuesday afternoon please don't hesitate to make contact. Regards, Tony McBride
OUTDOOR BOWLS The end of the summer season coach trip needed good weather and we were not disappointed as one of the best days in the New Year made our coach trip to Cust Bowling Club, enjoyable, by all that attended. The Ann Wright / Ron Harwood skipped team with Neville Houston, Alf Shearman and Sid Payne made the best of the well-presented green winning over all with three big wins. Cust Bowling Club also supplied great food and kept on members well supplied in refreshments. The highlight of the day was a draw for all our financial members, $2415 worth of accommodation at the, Peninsular Resort Moolooaba Beach, this was kindly arranged by one of our members Alf Shearman. Robert Palmer was the lucky member but we can’t thank the Resort and Alf enough for this Grand prize. Regards, Robin Leary SNOOKER Hi to you all. The section has just completed two in-house tournaments. The first was the Flying 50- the object is to be the first to 50 points (best of three.) The winner was Maurice Lancaster over Paul Templeton. The intermediate billiards was the same result, with Maurice beating Paul. Interclub Billiards has started so the room shall be closed to non-section members every Wednesday from 6:30pm till the end of May. The room will also be closed at 6:30pm on Thursdays for our sections club nights until further notice. The next game to be played is the handicap billiards. Cheers, Pot Black
TABLE TENNIS The photo on the front cover is of our own Helen Law & Ron Woods cutting the Anniversary cake from our 50th Jubilee celebration on Saturday March 16th. A group of the over 70 members, ex-members, guests & partners attended the dinner on the night. A huge thanks to all those who helped make this a very enjoyable evening. And also to the past members who shared their knowledge of the sections history since its inception. Thanks to Kevin Cole for opening the ceremony and to Cyril Williams who was our M.C. Photographed above are Life Members Ray Treloar, Ron Woods, Alan Law & Cyril Williams. By the time you read this the Canterbury Clubs competition would have started with 24 teams competing over four grades. Hornby has entered 9 teams this year, 3 in the A/A Res Grade, 3 in the B Grade, 1 in the C Grade, and 2 in the D Grade. The interclub competition is run fortnightly and concludes on the 1st of October. It’s great to see a lot of new players, especially in the D and B grades. Good luck to you all. Regards, Glenn
