Denis Miles - ADUR PRESIDENT
I was very pleased and of course honoured to be asked to be President of the Adur
Bowling Club for a second year. The Adur is such a superb Club and we are all so
fortunate to have such facilities available to us.
The Club is there for you to enjoy but the Club also needs your support. Whether it
being playing bowls in the drives, the leagues, Club friendly matches, Representative
games - your Club needs you.
This year we have a married couple as our Club Captains, Carrol and Brian Gunn.
They will both be very heavily involved in administering the Club fixtures so please
give them your support. If you have not played in Club friendly matches before put
your name down on the sheets. Friendly matches are a great way to meet new
people, a good way to improve your bowling skills and they really are Friendly.
Periodically the Club is involved in National and County matches. If you are not
actually playing in these it is an opportunity to see top class bowlers, so why not
come along and give the players your support.
Apart from bowling, the Club has so many things for you to enjoy - meeting up with
friends old and new, using the various facilities, such as bridge, yoga and table tennis,
or just enjoying the superb food and drink that is available – courtesy of Sally, Eileen
and their very able team.
It’s great to see people enjoying what they are doing so please, whenever you are in
the Adur, smile, be happy and enjoy – ITS A GREAT PLACE!!

Barry Ward – Club Chairman
As we look forward to this winter season, welcome once again to all you outdoor
bowlers coming back inside and to the new members who are joining the club. Not
forgetting, of course, you stalwart all-year round campaigners.
My message as always at this time of year is not only to wish that, win or lose, you
all enjoy your bowling this coming season but also to ask you to please make every
                                           2
effort to support your Captains , the Drives, the Club Leagues and Competitions, the
Friendlies, the Meal Matches and your Restaurant. All of these facets of club life are
vital if we are to continue to have a successful and flourishing club.
Once again we are running a recruitment campaign this autumn, so do encourage
your friends and family to come along and try the sport and take advantage of the free
coaching.
Finally if you do have skills whether they are of a professional, managerial,
administrative or practical nature which the club could use then please do come
forward and get involved. We rely on volunteers to maintain the excellent facilities
that we have built up over the years. Help spread the load and in doing so help the
club go from strength to strength.

Jan Smyth – Reception Manager
Hi, my name is Janice Smyth (I like to be called Jan).
I have been appointed as the Reception Manager for the Winter Season.
My hours of work are 8.45am to 1.00pm Monday – Friday, so if you need to
book Rinks for any purpose such as National, County or Club Competitions please
give me a ring during my normal hours and I will endeavour to help with your
enquiry as quickly as possible. If you need help with anything else to do with bowls,
just let me know and I will try to help where ever possible.
Some of you already know me, but there are many who do not. I have played at
the club for 10 years, mainly in the evenings and weekends. I’m married to John
Smyth who is the Men’s section Secretary. We have been married for 40 years and
have two daughters and four grandchildren.
One of my main duties is to cover the Head Green Stewards position which has
been effectively run by Iris Grice for many years. I will, of course still need Iris’s
help and knowledge for some time and would like to thank her for her help in my
early days already.
During my short time in this position I must say I didn’t realise how much
work the Volunteer Green Stewards do. THANK YOU to everybody who helps and
please can I ask for your continued support.
For anybody who maybe thinking about volunteering, please let me know and I
can assure you there is nothing to worry about, as you will be trained and looked after
very well. All volunteers are given vouchers for their time, which can be used for
bowls sessions.
We need more volunteers, so let me know, even if you can only spare some
time once a month, as the saying goes “EVERY LITTLE HELPS”.
Well that’s all from me for now. Please come and say hello if you see me, I
can’t promise to remember everybody’s name but I’ll give it a go.
Regards
Jan Smyth

Ken. Twine Company Treasurer
Solar Heating.
It is interesting to note that the benefit received from our Solar panels for the period
7/6/13 to 31/8/13 has reduced our kilowatt hours that we pay for, by anything up to
40%. This period was of course the best time of the year weather wise, and
obviously the saving will dramatically reduce in the winter months. With the expert
help, which Rod Phillippe donates to us in this area, we shall in time be able to
establish over 12 month financial period, exactly what the financial benefit is.
Bowling Green.
The Green has recently been professionally cleaned and you will have noticed first of
all, the improvement in the overall appearance. This process will lengthen the life of
the carpet, which will be cost effective, and it is the expert’s opinion that we should
get at least three more seasons usage before replacement. Our regular Green cleaners
are now operating more frequently on the advice we have received from the
suppliers. The Green was stretched at the same time as the cleaning, and is running at
a speed of nearly 18 seconds, which is very close to the speed that the World Bowls
Championships enjoy every year at Potters.
Gentlemen’s Toilet.
A new low maintenance, high quality floor covering has been installed.
Toilet Hand Driers.
The Board have decided to install hot air hand driers in the toilet areas. This will
replace the current paper products which will result in a considerable saving and will
comply with Health and Safety recommendations
Fees.
Congratulations have been received from several members on keeping our fees
increase for next year to an absolute minimum. The Board constantly battle to keep
costs down and at the same time maintain and improve our facilities. Every member
can help by introducing their friends to the sport. The more members we have, the
lower the cost to each individual.

Desmond Collins - Company Secretary
Welcome to the new season. There has been much happening during the
summer months as work to maintain the high standard of the clubs facilities is on-
going. I have listed below some of the things which have been achieved.
Club Cleaning. Effective from 5th September we have signed an agreement with
Sussex Cleaning Services who will carry out daily cleaning of the club. We have a
dedicated operative allocated to us to ensure continuity, and with the hands on
approach of the principles of SCS, we are confident that a high standard will be
maintained. Members who have any comments concerning the cleaning should
address them to the Company Secretary and not directly to the operative.
Car Park. Members won’t have missed the fact that all of the trees and shrubs have
now been removed in favour of additional parking spaces [8], and that the bay
markings have been re-lined.
The Directors decided on this action which will save a significant cost of
maintenance, and following a number of complaints from members that the bays
adjacent to the shrubs were not available. A revised contract for maintenance of the
car park area is being discussed.
Low Wall Adjacent to Entrance. This wall was damaged by frost during the winter,
and had been struck by a vehicle resulting in the structure being deemed unsafe. The
wall was demolished and rebuilt, for which an insurance claim is ongoing.
Fire Doors. We have had one or two instances where the door in the Men’s locker
room has been opened by a member and not correctly closed, resulting in the alarm
being activated when the club is closed. The result of this is that either Ken Twine or
Desmond Collins has to attend, regardless of the hour to ensure the club is secure.
There are clear notices asking members not to open these doors, but as one or two
individuals have ignored these, additional expenditure of member’s money is
required to set up another alarm system to deal with this.
Air Con System. This has again been up-graded with an additional unit. This work
has been necessary because the old system installed some 12 years ago has reach the
end of its useful life, and obtaining the materials required to maintain this was no
longer possible. We are grateful to Rod Phillippe for his continued overseeing of the
system.
Electrical System. The Annual PAT [Portable Appliance Testing] has been
completed during the summer, an annual requirement. Every 3 years the main
electrical systems have to be checked by an Electrical Contractor. This is a major
operation which we will arrange with the minimum disruption to the club’s activities.
Members will understand that these and many more things are required to maintain
the club, and hopefully will appreciate that the Directors have kept the annual fee to
£116.00, an increase of just £1.00.
The Directors have agreed that whilst all having collective responsibility for Board
decisions, each will, in future have dedicated areas of personal responsibility which
are:-
                                          6
Chairman Barry Ward.. Oversight of all Directors
Company Secretary Desmond Collins. To ensure that the Directors/ Trustees comply
with legal and statutory requirements and that there is good governance.
Company Treasurer Ken Twine. To ensure that the clubs financial obligations are met
and that there are adequate controls in place to ensure that all money due is received
and properly applied, and that all assets and liabilities are recorded.
Premises Director Wally Phillips. To safeguard and maintain the structure of the
building, its energy and water needs, and its associated equipment
Marketing Director Roger Provost. To seek Sponsorship and Advertising and also
promote the clubs facilities, whilst maintaining the clubs bowling equipment.
Facilities Director David Locke. Identify and maintain the internal decor and
furnishings, and deal with issues regarding the car park and outside areas.
Liaison Director Roger Buckman. Liaise with all bowling committees and oversee
and help deal with common arrangements and issues that may need exposure at
Board level.
All Directors give their time on a voluntary basis.
Club Hire. We continue to receive bookings for the hire of the clubs facilities. During
the summer we have hosted many meetings of foreign students attending language
courses which have provided a considerable income for the club, and we thank Robin
Ready for his help in arranging these.

John Smyth - Men’s Section Secretary
Once again the new Winter Season is starting and I hope you have all enjoyed a good
summer, either bowling, indoors or outdoors just enjoying the reasonable weather.
I extend a warm welcome to all new members to the Club whether you are a new
bowler or an experienced bowler. As you will find you have joined the Club with
the best facilities, certainly in Sussex and probably in the South of England.
I urge you to put your name on the boards to play in the Friendly Matches. It doesn’t
matter how experienced you are, as you will gain experience and enjoy an afternoon of
bowls with either Tea and Biscuits half way through or a splendid two course Meal at the
end of the match and make of all new friends. Even if it is only one match a month the
Captains will appreciate you playing.
If you have any problems or ideas regarding bowling, please do not hesitate, to contact
me, any Officer or Committee Member.
Lastly, I hope you will support the Men’s Captain, Brian Gunn and his Vice-Captain,
Marc Duson, by making yourself available for matches during the forthcoming season, even
once or twice a month will be a help. I can assure you will be greatly appreciated.
Most of all enjoy your bowling.

                                          ******

Ian Frith - Men’s Match Secretary
Once again we start the season with almost a full fixture list; unfortunately, we do
have some gaps in the program. In the main this is due to a number of clubs closing down or
deciding to reduce matches because of decreasing numbers and/or increasing costs.
Over the last year or so we have lost matches against;- B.H. & District League,
English Women’s Umpire Assoc., Havant, Hove Park, London & Southern Counties and
Solihull Strollers. We have not been successful in finding other clubs willing to take their
place.
All bowling clubs are having problems retaining and recruiting members and with
travelling, food and drink costs rising we are in very difficult times. The club needs
everyone’s support.
One new match for this season is against Cambridge I.B.A. on the 27th February, 2014.
This will probably be for one year only as they are a touring side and visit different areas
each year.
All our fixture results are recorded on the club web site (www.aduribc.com) so you
can easily check how the club is doing in friendly, county and national competitions.

Carrol Gunn, a Vice-Captain – Jane O’Neill and a Junior-vice Captain – Betty Pettitt and we
would ask that they are given all your support especially when it comes to putting names
down for the ladies and mixed matches.

For any new members or those who feel uncertain about playing in matches – please
talk to anyone who plays in these games – We are sure that they will encourage you to have
a go and hopefully you will enjoy the experience and come back for more.

entry by both Ladies and Gents.

these are advertised in the club – so please watch the notice boards.

Robin Ready - Club Administrator

The past year has been one of many changes and developments which have seen the
club move forward despite the financial climate which has in some way affected all
members of the club.
The main areas of my observations and comments over the winter period are as
follows:-
   1) Health and Safety
Please would all members observe the yellow boxed makings which
allow emergency vehicles to have access to the side gates at all times, also to
ensure all disabled parking spaces are used correctly,
The correct use of member’s fobs upon entry is essential as in the event
of any emergency we then have a record of all members within the club.
I strongly advise and recommend all members to familiarize themselves
to exit walk ways in the building,
       Publicity
The Club’s Webb site (www.aduribc.com) is continuing being updated,
and is a unique form of publicity which members can relay to potential new
       members.
Adverse weather conditions and the club’s opening hours are displayed
       during such times.
Input from our solar heating panels is being regular updated which is to
the benefit of all members by way of keeping downs the running cost of the
       club along with members subscriptions
    2) Coaching and Development
The Club continue to hold individual coaching sessions throughout the
week for potential new members which are always welcome.
Thursday afternoons 2.00pm until 4.30pm; beginners/improvers along with
Carers utilize the facilities, along with all the Drive sessions welcoming new
       members to their groups.
I take this opportunity to express my appreciation and thanks to both
new and established members for their valid assistance throughout the summer
programme and look forward to everyone’s assistance in developing and
promoting the forth coming winter programme.
