PRESIDENT’S CORNER Hello Members, The days are starting to get longer, and the weather is just a bit warmer with spring right around the corner. In Rugby news, The Warriors are close to qualifying for the playoffs, and the Crusaders are a hot favourite to win the finals. The Mitre 10 Cup will be starting soon, and the All Blacks will be heading to Sydney to kick off the Championship. We do our best to have it all on the Big Screen, but understandably they overlap sometimes. We had a good turnout for the Boxing Breakfast on Sunday the 29th. Unfortunately the outcome of the fight was not in Parker’s favour. Our winter Bingo will wrap up this month on the 28th, so there is still a bit of time, if you haven’t had a chance yet to come along. Family Day will be Sunday August 12th from 1:30 to 3:30 in the Sports Hall, bring the kids or grandkids for a fun afternoon. We are now booking seats for the Methven Race Day on Sunday September 16th. This is a great day put on by Clubs NZ. You don’t want to miss! Riverside Boxing will be here again on September 7th for a live professional tournament upstairs in the Sports Hall. We are hoping to have some key dates regarding the Club’s renovations coming soon! Keep watch of the TV in the foyer. Regards, Congratulations to lucky Leon! Winning $900 from July’s Kevin Cole Crack the Cube

CARDS Hi members, July has now come and gone...with our card section members enjoying another month of Thursday Euchre nights and those playing in our Saturday weekly "Combined Crib and Euchre Tournament” Interclub games. We have just completed the second round of games with all games going against us, a turn around from how we won all 1st round games, but everyone will agree we all enjoyed and played our games in good spirits .Better luck next year!! We are still playing our 2nd round set of six Aggregate games on Thursdays finishing on 9th August, waiting for best accumulated scores over these weeks. Those playing in our in-house Winter Tournament Games are progressing through with friendly rivalry amongst section play. So to this month, our section are looking forward to the All Sports "Alan Cole Trophy”, on Sunday 5th August, with 2 card teams and the Cole team participating with all the other sporting sections. Great to hear we will have 10 teams participating in this fun afternoon for euchre cards, as it has been a special, long time heritage tournament for our section. On Thursday 16th August, we have 14 members flying up to Hastings for the Chartered Clubs National Euchre Tournament on the 18th/19th August being held at Club Hastings. It will be a full on weekend. We play 36 games of Euchre on the Saturday, and then 27 games on Sunday .Results go from there, hopefully all good for us... The following weekend, again we have the All Sports Tops Driving Night for all sections to play in. Then on Sunday 26th August, Hornby are again hosting a 6 handed tournament upstairs, open to all clubs and Hornby members, looking to get our usual approx. 20 tables. Members make up a team of 3, be part of, and come and play...Report 12noon. To finish off the month, on Thursday 30th August we will have our end of month Thursday Pairs night, with members playing with their chosen partner for the night. Always a fun night. A busy month for our section, and lots to come next month...Check out our Cards noticeboard upstairs or on the HWMC website under Cards Sporting Section. Regards, Lorraine Cole
CRIB Our month started with the TASMAN SINGLES. A tightly contested battle played over 14 games with two sisters ending the night on 20 points each. A great effort Ladies, winning 10 out of 14 games. This required a 3 match play off with Ann Kavanagh taking the title from younger sister, Lesley Bulman. Well played Ann, those extra couple of years’ over the Lesley Bulman and Ann Kavanagh younger sister showed through! (Tasman Singles) The following week was the TASMAN PAIRS. Again this is played over 14 games with drawn partners at the beginning of the night. This always brings the smiles out as the partners are found. Once again the night ended in a tie on 22 points, Marie Musson and Lesley Bulman, Jocelyn Gianelly and James Kavanagh. Congratulations to Marie and Lesley Jocelyn Gianelly & James Kavanagh winning the play off Marie Musson & Lesley Bulman and being the Pairs (Tasman Pairs) Champions. CHARLIE GIBSON is played in pair’s format with the highest individual points on the night taking the title. Again it was a very close race, with 5 players within 3
points of each other. However the deserved winner, Gina Howden- Winter on 21 points taking the Silverware. Well played Gina with a noted change in form over recent night’s results. This takes care of our annual Crib titles for the year. The Ladies have shown all the class in these competitions – come on Guys pull your socks up and improve the pegging for 2019. Well played by the winners however just as Gina Howden-Winter importantly these competitions are enjoyed (Charlie Gibson) by all and ensures Hornby remains a competitive section where ever we play which showed in the Sunday tournament held at the Papanui Club. Our members, Val Giddens and Elsie Malkin taking the win with 28 points followed closely by Marie Musson and Derek Petch runners up on 27 points. Also during the month we had our Mid-Winter Christmas dinner at the Chalmers Restaurant. It was nice to be able to socialise away from the cards with drinks and a lovely meal. A special moment also took place during the month with Natalie Stevenson awarded Life Membership of the Crib Section. This is to honour the countless years Nat has put into the section, being on the Committee, selling raffles at the Club, always helping with those extra little things at Sunday tournament’s, playing countless nights of crib on Wednesday’s and maybe even her dry sense of humour! We are very grateful to you for all those years you have given to make the Crib section successful. Thank you Natalie Stevenson very much, Natalie. Life Member Lastly we would like to welcome back Derrick Hoskins and a warm welcome to our newest member Julie. All the best - The Cribbage Crew
DARTS Hornby had a great start in July. One of our top players Craig Ross won the Canterbury singles followed by Jim Poole at 3rd=.In the ladies, Sarah Pitama was 2nd and Maata Atkins 3rd=. Then away to Invercargill for the 51st Nationals and 1st the mixed pairs 3rd= to Warren and Vernaleigh, great start. Then we had a lot of 9= for many players, just not falling in I think. But we did manage to get Raewyn Edwards in the New Zealand team for the 2nd year running. Also South Island reps to Australia in October are Warren French, Craig Ross, Sarah Pitama, and Raewyn Edwards. Great stuff and good luck. Wednesday inter club is ongoing and all 8 teams are going well, some can still improve but all enjoy. Last thing this month is the Auckland masters and tip of this is back a local, yes I know the top 8 pros are here but they have to travel and some of our young guns are very good. 3 names to remember Cody Harris, Haupai Puha, and a very young Tahuna Irwin. Don't say I didn't warn you. Yours at Tops, JP FISHING Fishing wouldn’t be fishing without a story to go with it. Winter is time to reflect on the more enjoyable moments of past fishing. I remember well, the trips to Coleridge one in particular as we set off full of expectation, with a slight Norwest arch, on arrival the lake was calm as, with a couple of hours to set up camp with a good BBQ tea and some ales ready for an early morning start the Army Tent was quite a challenge to put up having not been used for a few years. Lawrie grabbed the spot next to the door with the excuse he wouldn’t wake anybody with his five o’clock start. Some wives had come along with the assurance that it was a relaxing weekend and they would not have to do the dishes or cook any meals. The BBQ tea was one of the best I have tasted and a wine to wash it down; this set the scene for turning in early. A gentle breeze rustled the bushes between the tents and campervans as some of us attempted to get an early night, with shouting at those that continued to talk well into the night. Finally all was silent until a voice from within a caravan said sod off you idiots and stop rocking our van, followed by a jet engine roar and
the nor west took hold, even the seagulls had landed and grabbed the tussock to hold on as lanterns and torches appeared everywhere to tie down flapping awnings and campervans starting up and turned into the wind to stop them blowing over. Missiles of flying objects disappeared into the darkness along with a large Marque skirt erected for Fish and Game prize giving the next day as well as an empty trailer supporting an advertising hoarding took off over the boundary fence. The army tent had survived with a few bent poles and many slabs of beer holding it in place along with Lawrie and Daniel snoring all through the commotion. With only what seemed a few minutes of sleep, Tony was knocking on every ones camper, come on are you going fishing make the most of this calm before the wind gets up again, hell he must have been a heavy sleeper or deaf not hearing the gale force winds that kept us awake all night. Our wives now prefer not to go fishing at Coleridge unless a motel is on offer. Brass Monkey fishing at Lake Coleridge will be on Sat 4th August for those hardy souls who like ice conditions for fishing. Screaming Reels
GOLF Sunday 22nd had 24 of our golfers at McLeans Island for the Ian Watson trophy. This is a Stableford game with the partners drawn at the end. Our winners on the day were: Y Hong & G Baldwin on 77 pts followed by G Kingi-Hazel & T Voice on 66 pts, R Farmer & D Benn on 63, P Brewer & J Anderson on 63 pts. Nearest to pin for the ladies: R Adler and for the men J Kingi-Hazel. 2s J Kingi-Hazel on hole 2 and K Melhopt on hole 11. Our losing card winner was W Scott. Well done to the winners on the day. Last month I didn’t mention we had two of our ladies come back from the nationals in Oamaru with a 3rd place in the Stableford game. Great work Pam Brewer and Marie McLeod. Our next game is at Rangiora on Sunday 19th August for the 2nd round of the Sisson & Staff trophies, Tee off is 9.30 check the notice board for the game sheet. Anyone wishing to learn, or get back into golf and have a fun day out meeting a great bunch of people can contact Steve Stevens on 3446332. All the best, Steve MIDWEEK BOWLS Indoor bowls has continued upstairs in the Sports Hall very successfully over the past month. It has been pleasing to welcome some new members who are enjoying the experience of friendly mid- week bowls. We had a bus trip out for lunch on 3 July which was enjoyable. We lunched at Lincoln and then went on to Leeston and home through Rolleston where we viewed all the new sub-divisions which are very much underway. As always, new members are welcome. Regards, Tony McBride
SNOOKER The section is going ok with teams in the interclub all in good places, but only a third of the way through. The intermediate snooker champs start on the 9th of August. The junior snooker championship was won by Tom Ng, who beat Paul Templeton in a good final. 5 teams are away to the South Island Pairs and we wish them well. Players keep a lookout on the notice board as we must have all our contests done by November 1st. Support your section! Cheers, Pot Black TRAVEL Thursday 12th July saw 18 travel section members depart the club for Court Theatre. The play was called “The Biggest” based on a story of four guys from a working men’s club with a plan to endeavour to win the biggest fish competition to enable them to win money for a boat. Unfortunately as can often happen when four guys are having quite a few drinks in a bar, the conversation can turn to be undesirable. This certainly was the case, which unfortunately ruined what could have been a very good show. It had lots of humour along with tinges of sadness. However the evening was enjoyable, finishing off with a most enjoyable supper back at the club. Future events Saturday 25th August 31 members have booked and paid for an excursion on the Alpine Express, with a 3 hour stopover in Moana for lunch and relaxation. Here’s hoping for some snow on the mountains with a lovely clear day. That would really enhance the views. Tickets have been reserved for Wednesday 5th September for the musical show featuring Suzanne Lynch and Marian Burns to name just a couple. This is held in the Al Vida hall in Hansons Lane
commencing at 11am. There is a light lunch of sandwiches and scones to follow. Cost is $25 you need to supply your own transport there. Please put your name on the list and money in the box if you wish to attend. Always look on notice board for future outings. I will send an email out soon with preferences for the annual ladies day out in November Next meeting Monday 20th August at 7pm Warm regards, Lyn Wright Sports Section Chairpersons Section Chairperson Contact All Sports Darren Smith 027-388-9030 Billiards/Snooker Geoff Baldwin 03-942-2982 Cards (Euchre) Diane Heath 03-349-2455 Cribbage Diane Heath 03-349-2455 Cricket Sam Walker 027-825-4939 Darts Wendy Gibb 03-942-2395 Fishing Jason Smith 03-942-8182 Golf Steve Stevens 03-344-6332 Indoor Bowls David Bullock 03-980-8667 Midweek Bowls Tony McBride 03-322-8803 Outdoor Bowls Robin Leary 03-349-9390 Pool Paul Morris 03-338-6513 Table Tennis Michael Hills 027-231-8356 Travel Lyn Wright 021-507-671
