Singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Amy Helm’s third album, What the Flood Leaves Behind, is her most autobiographical yet, both in content and creation. Due out June 18th via Renew Records/BMG, these 10 songs represent a gathering of ideas and experiences, friends and collaborators. Yet, the album also marks a landing — a pause for the traveling musician and mother of two young boys who was seeking clarity in her calling and career. After making multiple albums and performing in far-flung places, Helm returned home to Woodstock’s Levon Helm Studios just before the pandemic to record What the Flood Leaves Behind and reclaim a sense of self. “Going back to the place where I learned so much about how to express music, how to hold myself in music, how to listen to music,” she begins, “it was humbling in a funny way. I could see clearly where I came from and where I am now in my life. I was singing from a different place now and for a different reason.” Encore presentation of Mariza sings Amália from Lisbon STREAMING April 9-11, 2021 - $30 Portuguese singer Mariza celebrates the twentieth anniversary of her career and the centenary of the late Queen of Fado, Amália Rodrigues, with Mariza Sings Amália, her first full album of classics, is available in the US as of January 29, 2021. DRUM CIRCLE Our Arden Drum Circle will continue to be held at 1:00 pm on the third Sunday of each month unless notified through our eMail list or our Facebook Page. Weather permitting, we will be drumming in the Gild Hall's outdoor Shady Grove next to the swimming pool. If you need to, parking can be done on the edge of the Shady Grove along the driveway and Pond Lane, but not on the other side of these roads. You may also continue to park in the Gild Hall's parking lot. You should bring your own seating. In the event of cold or rainy weather, we will be inside of the Gild Hall, upstairs, until the resumption of other events preclude us from using that space, then we will be back downstairs. We will provide seating when indoors. For now we will not be sharing drums, so please bring one, or other percussion instruments. Indoors or out, please wear a mask until you are settled into a socially distanced seat. Maybe by summer we will not need to do this, but for now, it is important to continue these practices. Our venue, the Arden Club Gild Hall and our sponsor, the Arden Concert Gild needs donations to be able to continue this Circle. They provide heat, electric as well as the spaces indoors and out. Also consider joining the Club if you are not already a member. It is inexpensive ($25/year) and has many benefits and opportunities, see ardenclub.org. To get notifications, get on my eMail list at ardendrumcircle@yahoo.com. Hope to see you there on April 19! April 2021 page 2

Consider a donation to the Arden Club to keep it going: Donation link: http://ardenclub.org/donate/ GARDENERS GILD (GG) At our March meeting, we enjoyed another great talk -- by Paul Orpello, about his work at Hagley, restoring and rescuing their formerly fabulous gardens. Search “Orpello” on YouTube to find the video! On April 19th, 3:00 - 6:00PM, our next meeting will consist of Tree and Shrub distribution for those who ordered from our recent Gardeners Gild Sale. Keep looking to our FB page and keep reading our GG emails to learn your scheduled pick-up time! We want to stave off chaos in the Gild Hall parking lot, so we need everyone to show up at their assigned time. We also need people to pick up the items at the nursery, about 45 minutes each way -- preferably using your (or a friend’s) pickup truck! Please call or email me if you can help. NEW GILD LEADERSHIP: Please let us know how you can help us on a year-round basis: we’re looking for people who like working with finances, writing emails, and planning meetings. If we continue to expect one person to do all the work, they will burn out, so we want to build a leadership structure that shares the tasks among three or four people. Usually we meet on the third Monday of the month, at 7:30PM, currently via Zoom. Our meetings and activities are open to all! If you would like more information, or to be added to our mailing list, please contact: jeana.carey@gmail.com. April 2021 page 3

For inquiries, please contact ardenswimgild@gmail.com SCHOLARS GILD “How Do You Like It? Choices in Shakespeare’s Consummate Comedy” Speaker: Linda Emerick Arden Scholars Gild Evening, Tuesday, April 20, 7:30 PM, via Zoom It is quite remarkable that Shakespeare’s plays are continually staged throughout the world over 400 years after his death. There is a huge variety of interpretive choices can be found in those texts for readers, directors, designers, and actors. These different interpretations can be a help or a hindrance to understanding the text. April’s Scholars Gild talk, in collaboration with the Arden Shakespeare Gild, will guide us through some of those interpretations and explore why we continue to “find ourselves” in Shakespeare’s plays and in the settings in which they are staged. Arden has a long tradition of staging Shakespeare’s plays dating back to its founding. The Village itself was named after the Forest of Arden-- one of the settings in As You Like It. In recent decades, the play has been staged every ten April 2021 page 4
years to commemorate Arden’s founding in 1900. Since last year’s production had to be canceled, this summer the Arden Shakespeare Gild is hoping to present As You Like It once again (stay tuned) directed by Mary Catherine Kelley. Our speaker, Linda Emerick, will examine the choices made in various productions of Shakespeare’s As You Like It in both stage and film within the previous twenty-five years. This includes those staged by the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon and Shakespeare’s Globe in London. This Scholars evening is the perfect complement to seeing the production by the Arden Shakespeare Gild, hopefully, this summer. Linda Emerick is a retired teacher of English language arts and Shakespearean Studies. She delighted in teaching Shakespeare’s plays to the students at Cab Calloway School of the Arts in Wilmington for twenty-one years and Delaware’s Student Shakespeare Festival has benefitted from her guidance for twenty-five years. She has studied the plays of Shakespeare at a National Endowment for the Humanities seminar and the Shakespeare’s Globe in London. She earned a Post-Graduate Diploma, in Shakespeare and the Theatre, at the Shakespeare Institute, Stratford-upon- Avon in 2013. She served as the text coach for 2019’s Romeo and Juliet for the Arden Shakespeare Gild. The Scholars Gild meets the third Tuesday of the month, September through June. This season, we will continue to meet virtually via Zoom until further notice. There is no fee to attend Scholars Gild discussions. Since we usually ask for donations to the Arden Club at our live evenings, we would like to encourage all to continue this tradition by making a donation on at http://ardenclub.org/donate/. Your support helps keep the virtual and in-person lights on at the Club and makes possible dynamic programming like concerts, theater, dance, and of course, our Scholars Gild evenings. Follow the “Arden Scholars’ Gild” on Facebook to get all the updates. If you would like to receive email notifications about this or future Scholars Gild events, contact the Scholars Gild via ScholarsGild@gmail.com. Zoom info for this Scholars Gild evening: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83613335180?pwd=VkZKV094T3IyMDM4OGFRSkNKajVUZz09 Meeting ID: 836 1333 5180, Passcode: 385509 Note: Our volunteers work very hard to get the Arden Club Calendar out before the 1st of every month, but lately we have noticed that many of us are not receiving the Club calendar in time for the events taking place at the beginning of the month. This has been due to very slow processing and delivery by the United States Post Office. Last month it took 14 days from the time we dropped off the Calendars to the Post Office until we received them in our mailboxes. The previous month it took 11 days. Unfortunately, we cannot do anything about that. Our complaints fall on deaf ears. The Arden Club does post a PDF copy of the Calendar on our Club website, ardenclub.org, by the first day of each month. Events are also posted on the home page and Gild pages of the website as well. We highly recommend you check the website or the PDF calendar early in the month to see if there are any events that interest you. Thank you - Arden Club Calendar Committee April 2021 page 5
