January 2020 LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER Dear Members, Happy New Year! 2020 marks the beginning of a new decade and a new beginning for all of us. Last year we accomplished a great deal that we should all be proud of, and we won’t stop. Our goals for the new year continue to be fiscal responsibility, innovation and member engagement. Winter came early and we were challenged with snow, ice and power outages throughout our community. You will be pleased to know that we finally pursuing proposals for the installation of a generator for our Club. The investment in this piece of equipment will allow us to protect our assets and provide power for our Members, in case of emergency. I will continue to keep you apprised of this project. We are looking forward to several innovative projects that we have been working on that will come to fruition in 2020. Of note, we are working on a new website and back office program. This will greatly enhance the service and communication with and for our Members. We are looking to launch in late Spring. The new year presents us all with the opportunity to jump in and get involved. Member engagement is more than just a concept and very rewarding. It takes Member participation to really make things work. We look for everyone’s creativity and effort to maintain the community that we all expect to have here at Lake Mohawk. There are plenty of committees and opportunities to engage. We welcome all talents! We will be holding a new Member “coffee and conversation” on Saturday morning, January 11 at 10:30AM in the Member’s Room. Feel free to stop by and say hello. Thank you to our Staff and the Committee of Volunteers for their work on this year’s German Christmas Market. This community event is a wonderful way to welcome the season. Members enjoyed the complimentary Member shuttle and the performance by A Touch of Grey on Friday evening. We all enjoyed the shopping, German food and spirit of our community throughout the entire weekend. Best wishes to you and your family for a happy and healthy New Year. I hope to see you at the Club. January 2020 LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES Dear Members, Welcome to a new year and a new decade! The 2020’s are upon us, and a fresh start as some might see it. I, personally, am looking forward to a lot of positive happenings this year for the Lake Mohawk Community. December proved to be a challenge for our Membership and our staff. Thousands of our Members were without power and heat, or even trapped in their homes for a week. Members’ homes and vehicles were damaged by falling trees and ice, burst pipes, and downed power lines. And the timing for the community, this early in the winter season and right before the German Christmas Market, made it an exceptionally difficult time for our community. As devastating as this event was, times like these really show the spirit of our community. The abundance of offers for help, shelter, heat and other assistance were impressive. The people of Lake Mohawk never cease to amaze me with their kindness! The dedication and time spent of our staff and management were equally as impressive. Our grounds crew and road staff worked tirelessly for days straight to maintain our roads and facilities. These men and women remained at the Club grounds from the time the weather started until all the work was done, barely going home to rest through the three day period. The staff and volunteers at the Club rushed right in the help clear snow and prep for the German Christmas Market. At the German Christmas Market, the staff worked hard again, through another long weekend, to put on a safe and fun event for the Membership and the general public. If you see a staff member, remember to say “thank you” for all the hard work they do, and that they do with a smile. Where these are things we would not ever change about our community, there are definitely some changes that the BOT will be working towards in the upcoming year. 2020 will be a year for The Member. The Board is already working on steps to make LMCC more Member-centric, focusing on ways to improve the Member experience and offer more benefits to our Members. We are changing systems, implementing policies, and rewriting by-laws to focus more on the needs of the Lake Mohawk Member in the current day and age. Things have changed tremendously since this community was established in 1927, and it is only fitting that as we approach our 100 year anniversary, we establish ourselves as a more modern community with old world charm. We have a lot of work to do in the upcoming year, and I thank you for entrusting your current BOT to lead the way. As I did last month, I encourage all the Members this year to make it one of your resolutions to get involved. We are all volunteers, and we all have the opportunity to make a difference and have our voices heard! Looking forward to a productive and happy 2020. A happy and healthy new year to all, Christina Repka PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES THE PAPOOSE 7

Thinking of switching to gas? Before you take the leap, here are some things you should know: Safety issues are a concern. In the past year, gas related tragedies have occurred in New England and here at home in Sussex County. These incidents resulted in multiple explosions, dozens of fires and one death. Gas is being shipped overseas. Gas exports are expected to grow exponentially in the coming months and years. Less gas at home means constricting supply. Less supply means higher prices. The cost to switch is expensive. Utilities in our area are estimating the cost to convert at $14,000 or more. And with no guarantee of future low prices, the return on investment is uncertain at best. There are many reasons why many of your neighbors have chosen to continue to heat their homes with heating oil: It’s the safe option. Heating oil is biodegradable, nontoxic, nonflammable and it can’t explode. It’s the safest fuel around. Homeowners have maximum choice. There are many local heating oil companies that provide quick and convenient service. And you can choose which one suits you best. That’s not the case when you are dealing with a utility. The future is bright. With the advent of Ultra-low-sulfur heating oil combined with Bioheat®, today’s heating oil is clean, green and environmentally friendly. No matter what you decide, it pays to get the facts. For more information, visit ThinkTwiceNJ.com. Paid for by the Fuel Merchants Association of New Jersey. 24 THE PAPOOSE
