2021 GUY E. BOURDEAU SCHOLARSHIP WINNER Sean Dobson, University of Cincinnati (Cincinnati, Ohio) Sean Dobson has been focused on understanding and improving the industry and academic capabilities of additive manufacturing (AM) for the last four years. He was introduced to the technology during an internship with the Gulfstream Aerospace 3D Printing Laboratory where he was given the opportunity to operate stereolithography (SLA), material jetting (MJ), fused filament fabrication (FFF), and direct metal laser melting (DMLM) AM technologies. Upon returning from the internship, Sean decided to continue to pursue AM through academic research at the University of Louisville (Louisville, KY). He found his research passion in metals AM, particularly DMLM. Sean would spend his remaining undergraduate terms as well as his masters, both in mechanical engineering, performing cutting edge research in the U of L Rapid Prototyping Center (RPC). During his time at the RPC, Sean became familiar with different methods of testing and characterizing metals materials. He developed his own testing methods, including a powder characterization work flow that would lead to a journal publication. He also presented his work several times at the Solid Freeform Fabrication (SFF) Symposium and was even able to attend AMUG once before. Sean’s most impactful project spanned his entire time working in the RPC. He was able to see the early stages of parameter development, the rigor of material characterization, and the final phase of developing an AM specific alloy. This project, helmed by Dr. Thomas Starr, is what Sean credits for his desire to pursue further schooling and a career in AM research and development. Currently, Sean is in his second semester of his Ph.D. in materials science at the University of Cincinnati (Cincinnati, OH). His dissertation project is taking shape as he continues literature review and analyzing previous data. The current goal of the project is to develop a method for rapid quality assurance by only requiring a scan of the final part surface. In addition to pursing a Ph.D., Sean is also working part-time at a local Cincinnati start-up, Vertex Manufacturing, helmed by CEO Greg Morris and President Steve Rengers. Sean has become a valuable member of the team, offering insights concerning existing technologies and the materials science side of AM. Sean looks forward to facilitating collaboration between the University and Vertex as he hopes to bridge the gap between industry and academia. 2021 RANDY STEVENS SCHOLARSHIP WINNER John Sorvillo, Director, Westwood Prep Academy at New Beginnings (Youngstown, Ohio) Hello, my name is John Sorvillo and I’m the Director for Westwood Prep Academy at New Beginnings in Youngstown, Ohio. Director is an easier way to say principal, guidance counselor, intervention specialist, substitute teacher and janitor. We’re a small school located inside a children’s residential center. Our students are mostly in county custody and need a lot of help getting caught up in their academics. Our mission statement is to inspire hope through education, and that is a challenge we gladly accept. Our 3D printing program has played a huge role in that inspiration. We’re able to show at-risk students a whole new way of learning. This technology has opened avenues of teaching that we never imagined. We are able to positively impact many facets of our student’s lives. 3D printing has given us the ability to make our kids a positive force in our community. When I’m not at school, I’m a husband and father of two awesome boys. I coach youth league soccer, and though we may not win many games, no one has as much fun as our team! In my downtime, I enjoy playing Fortnite with my boys, watching NASCAR with my wife, and building models in my man cave. RANDY STEVENS SCHOLARSHIP RECIPEINTS RANDY STEVENS SCHOLARSHIP 2020 - Chris Kaminsky, Muskegon Community College The Randy Stevens Scholarship provides the opportunity for a highly motivated high school teacher, college or university professor in additive manufacturing (AM) to earn the opportunity to attend the Additive Manufacturing 2019 - Wenchao Zhou, University of Arkansas User Group (AMUG) Conference. 2019 TECHNICAL COMPETITION WINNERS The AMUG Technical Competition provides a forum for users of additive manufacturing technologies to display their unique applications as well as their finishing capabilities. The AMUG Technical Competition provides ADVANCED CONCEPT ADVANCED FINISHING ADVANCED FINISHING a forum for users of additive manufacturing technologies to display their unique applications as well as their finishing capabilities. ADVANCED CONCEPTS The Advanced Concepts category aims to recognize individuals and their companies for exemplary work with additive manufacturing technologies. Entries in this category will “push the envelope” for a particular technology or a combination of technologies. Unique applications, processes, and/or utilization are desired in this category. ADVANCED FINISHING The Advanced Finishing category has been created to recognize the efforts of those whom we often overlook when evaluating a model. The designers and engineers may hatch a concept, but it is often the parts finishers, model makers, painters and others that bring a prototype to life. This course will provide guidance for what is key to control quality output and demonstrate compliance The prep course is a discussion-oriented and interactive session in which participants receive to requirements. The approaches here will be based on ASTM Additive Manufacturing Standards and how comprehensive application-based knowledge of the 3D printing industry. Covering key roles and they can be combined with the ‘traditional’ manufacturing toolkit, including: responsibilities for an AM technician, the AM process chain, design for AM, material and process • Quality Management Systems for Additive Manufacturing selection, secondary processes, and key safety considerations, you will begin to understand how • “Make a plan, stick to the plan” to apply AM in your organization. • Facility (machine qualification, supply chain, post-processing) • Process The certification exam consists of 120 multiple-choice questions. • Materials • How can standards help? Objectives • Linking Quality to Certification & Qualification • Summarize the AM process chain, materials, technologies and economic drivers • Fundamental requirements for regulated industries • Evaluate designs for AM covering general guidelines, file formats, build factors and • Demonstration of Suitable Qualified & Experienced Personnel – People are key optimization strategies • Lean Manufacturing Methods – Driving towards ‘right first time’ • Evaluate differentiating factors when selecting AM materials and processes • “Haven’t we done this before?” • Describe the end to end manufacturing chain from build preparation to quality assurance • Configuration Management & Change Control – What is essential? • Explain how to leverage AM to support various traditional manufacturing methods • How can we track performance, prevent deviations, and what to do if quality deviates? • Describe the impact of AM on the manufacturing environment and key risk and safety • How do we use NDT, in-process monitoring, and other AM tools? considerations The 2-day course will be followed by an exam that will be conducted 2 weeks after the training event, held online.
