NEW YEAR, NEW BEGINNING...THINGS WILL GET BETTER JANUARY 2021 - ISSUE # 338 I can’t believe it’s finally (almost) 2021! I want to wish everyone in Wellington on the Lake and everyone who reads this; a most happy, exciting and fulfilling New Year...remember, as C.S.Lewis said, “There are far better times ahead than any we leave behind.” I am excited about where we are going in 2021, in our Community, our Province and our Country. I hope we all look to the upcoming year as something to get excited about, so may all your troubles last as long as your resolutions and let’s get excited about the future… the past won’t mind. Our future is beginning to look very promising with the COVID-19 vaccine available and rolling out now across Canada. I encourage everyone to get the vaccine and let’s put an end to this pandemic. As you know, we had a COVID-19 exposure in the Rec Centre (RC) during the week of December 11th. The RC was closed for a week to allow for deep cleaning and to ensure our going forward protocols were safe and a strong deterrent against the virus. We must follow these protocols whenever we enter the RC for the foreseeable future, even after the vaccines begin to rollout in our local area. I know it is repetitive but here are the reinforced protocols for the use of the facilities in the RC that we must continue to follow: • Masks must be worn at all times in the RC, with a few exceptions. Masks may be removed while exercising (gym, ping pong games and line dancing) but must be put on again after the exercise, ping pong game, or line dance. • The only exception to the wearing of masks is for the Quilters who work over a machine, but do maintain physical distance and therefore can wear a face shield. In the RC it is required that everyone wear a mask, not a face shield. • Physical distancing must be maintained by everyone in the RC and in fact, everywhere you go until this pandemic is officially over. • The emergency exit doors in the fitness centre and the snooker rooms are for emergency use ONLY!. Please use the door at the end of the hallway next to the fitness centre, the pool side doors as well as the exit door in the main hall just to the right of the stage to exit the Rec Centre. The front doors are for entry only, you must disinfect, sign-in and disinfect again. • Upon entry to the RC, it is mandatory to sign in to the Contact Tracing Sheet. We would ask that everyone print their names, and please enter the time and where you are going in the RC. Please sanitize your hands, sign in, then sanitize your hands again. This process will ensure that everything at the sign-in table is constantly sanitized. • Please remember to wash and sanitize your hand whenever possible. So, if we continue to follow the protocols and then move to the vaccination of our residents, 2021 should look very bright for all of us in Wellington on the Lake. And speaking of the future in 2021, the following is an overview of where we are going as a Community in 2021. The Board is currently in the throes of preparing a three to five year Plan for our activities and improvements in WOTL. We plan to finalize the plan in January and we hope to involve the community in our planning as well. Continued next page... Wellington on the Lake Residents’ Association 4
NEW YEAR, NEW BEGINNING...THINGS WILL GET BETTER JANUARY 2021 - ISSUE # 338 The Plan will be divided into sections for 2021, 2022-25, and Special Projects. The following is an overview of what we are putting together: • 2021 Plan – this will focus on the completion of the Park (north of the tennis court) which will require more pathways, trees, and benches. The Parkette at the corner of Prince Edward and Empire will also be completed with gardens and benches. The Outdoor Living Centre (OLC) will also move along with the completion of electricity and hopefully furnishings as well as BBQ’s etc. We will be searching for a new contractor to complete the Tennis Court resurfacing. • 2021 Revenue Generation – this will focus on restarting and completing our WOLRA membership drive in the Spring. We will also be laying out our plan for generating revenue from our Neighbourly News advertising program. Also, we expect to have a Garage Sale in 2021 and it will require some planning and some changes from past Garage Sales. Finally, we will be rolling out various other revenue generating programs for us in the Community and to return our solid giving to local charities. • 2022 – 2025 Plan – this will focus on defining where we want go next in our Community Improvement plans. We have already received many ideas for projects from the membership and we now have to prioritize these ideas and get your thoughts as to how we can proceed. So, we hope to get community agreement on the plans. • Special Projects – this will focus on special issues and projects and once again, we will be asking for the membership’s help in defining and assisting the Board with these Special Projects – more to come. • So, we have our work cut out for us in 2021 and remember, we will be looking to replace some Board members who will complete their terms in 2021, so please consider a term of volunteering for your community. The Board is excited about where we are going in 2021 and we hope you are as well. There is going to be a lot of challenging, fulfilling work for our membership and we are asking everyone to be engaged and do their part in making our community the best it can be for all our residents. So, remember that what the New Year brings to us will depend on what we bring to the New Year...all the best to all of us in 2021. NEW YEAR, NEW BEGINNING...THINGS WILL GET BETTER JANUARY 2021 - ISSUE # 338 KEEPING WOTL INFORMED - HISTORY OF THE E-BLAST As this year draws to a close, we can look back on the early days of our COVID learning curve, when everything was new and scary. Paul Denault's regular e-Blasts kept us up-to-date, connected, and informed. This valuable communication tool has something of a history which you might find interesting. In 2014/2015 when Kate Brookfield was our WOLRA President, Lawrence Northway had the idea of distributing the monthly newsletters via email thereby saving a bunch of money on printing costs as well as having a tool with which to quickly communicate with the whole community. He presented this idea to the Board and then the community; overcoming considerable resistance stemming from fears of hacking and widespread distribution of frivolous stuff like jokes, etc. Lawrence assured us all that the distribution list would be safely stored on his computer and no frivolous emails would be sent. He spent many an afternoon sitting at a table in the Rec Centre collecting email addresses and reassuring folks that he would safeguard their privacy. The campaign was successful and Lawrence emailed the Neighbourly News out using that list for many months. A travel schedule and personal issues saw the duties of what then was called e-Com passed on to Gerry Ippersiel, who saw to the electronic delivery of the Neighbourly News for a couple of years. When Gerry had had enough, our Webmaster, Simon Arcand took over the distribution of the NN as an attachment, then later by emailing just a link to the Neighbourly News on the website. The Membership Committee began collecting email addresses during the membership drives, collecting many more email addresses and bringing us to where we are today. A fateful meeting in Elaine Jackson's kitchen (Elaine was our WOLRA President by then) of the Communication Committee was called to address the issue of timeliness of communications. There had been a couple of events that went by poorly attended due to forgetfulness and over- sight. The Committee was looking at possible solutions that could serve as reminders of upcoming events. Paul suggested a weekly update of the coming events and volunteered to send these weekly updates via e-Blasts. Paul Denault has been our Master of the Blast ever since. Paul's judgment, as to what constitutes suitable blast material, has been criticized occasionally but has been lauded over and over again by most of us. Paul and Pat moved to WOTL in October of 2015, headed south for the winter and returned in the spring of 2016, jumping in to help at our annual Garage Sale and then volunteering for the WOLRA Board. Paul completed his "tour of duty" as a Board member in 2018 and was called back for a one year term in 2019 replacing a Board member who had suddenly resigned. The e-Blast has been around long enough now for us to take it for granted. Please, let’s take a moment to reflect on how useful it has been, and imagine how many times personal interests had to be subordinated to get the Blast out. Thank you Paul, and thank you Gerry, Simon, and Lawrence for your foresight and dedication to better informed lives here in Wellington on the Lake. Al Smith, Roving Reporter Wellington on the Lake Residents’ Association 11
NEW YEAR, NEW BEGINNING...THINGS WILL GET BETTER JANUARY 2021 - ISSUE # 338 HOT CHOCOLATE & MULLED WINE FOR THE WALKABOUTERS Hosted by the WOLRA Board L-R Rick Stevens, Bob Hicks, Gerry Stewart, Derek Mendham, WOW, WHAT A TURNOUT! Al Smith, Alison Whittaker, Gail Hardie After months of not socializing, WOTL was ready for this. On Monday, January 7th and Tuesday, the 8th from 6pm to 7:30 hot chocolate, mulled wine, cookies and candy canes were offered to walkabouters by the WOLRA Board. Everything was COVID-safe; cookies and candy canes were individually wrapped, hot chocolate was in packets, hot water on hand (bring your own mug, some Styrofoam cups available). Masks were worn (most of the time; hard to drink or eat while masked!), sanitizer was provided, congregating was discouraged but those who did, did so while safe distancing. So nice to hear sounds of happy chatter after months of silence. The weather cooperated; very cold but at least no wind so that was helpful. Thank you from the WOLRA Board to all those who came, and thank you from all of us to the WOLRA Board for coming up with the idea and standing out in the cold for hours to provide the goodies. Photos by Barb Mendham “What a beautiful idea to hand out hot chocolate and wine (although we were too late for the mulled wine LOL). To all the volunteers who braved the cold weather and to the Board, thank you very much. It gave us a chance to meet up with a few of the faces we have not seen in many weeks and months, and to visit all the beautifully decorated houses.” R&D St James “A great idea; well organized gathering, mulled wine shuperior (hic, hic).” B. Beasant Editor’s Note: Votes on nominees for the Griswold Awards came pouring in during and after these evenings, so that was great! A personal observance… most if not all walkabouters WERE practicing safe-walking; on the left and with lights of some sort. BRAVO! Let’s keep up the good work. We felt fortunate to be on our island, somewhat isolated from the rest of the world. Yes, summer tourists (“outsiders”) worried us but we made it to autumn mostly unscathed. When news of a COVID vaccine being given over the next few months hit, it was met with feelings of relief, and hope on the horizon. By the beginning of December, COVID case numbers began trickling into our Green (Prevent) zone which has now become a Yellow (Protect) zone; first in Wellington’s elementary school, then our Rec Centre and now the Legion. As of December 20th there were 8 active cases of COVID on our island. The next level is orange (Restrict)... There are some among us who strongly believe we already had COVID back before it was official, but that doesn’t mean we can’t get it again, or pass it on asymptomatically to another. Please, let us continue to be careful out there; it is not over yet but we WILL get through this! As of 12:01 a.m. December 24th, Ontario will be in Gray (Lockdown) zone (skipping past Red (Control) Zone) for 28 days in hopes of curbing the growth of COVID cases, which is expected to rise significantly after Christmas. Brenda Silver and Theresa Mainville DO WHAT YOU NEED TO DO FOR YOU Regarding the Christmas Cheer Basket article above; according to inQuinte.ca 12/19: “While the risk of transmission through food or other objects is relatively low, individuals who received food or packages from the Legion between Nov 30 and Dec 18 are also advised to monitor for symptoms of COVID-19, the health unit said. These individuals are considered low-risk contacts at the current time and are not required to isolate unless they are otherwise instructed to do so by HPEPH. DON’T THROW AWAY YOUR CHRISTMAS TREE If you have a real tree and you plan to get rid of it in the New Year, here’s an idea. Put it in your backyard so it will give some shelter for the birds. If you want to go further, hang a few spruce cones slathered in peanut butter and coated with corn meal. Or fill up pine cones with sunflower seeds or just dip them in suet or melted bacon fat. See page 32 for more recipes. The birds will love you and give you something to watch this winter. You can also buy suet balls or suet rings mixed with seeds and hang those. NEW YEAR, NEW BEGINNING...THINGS WILL GET BETTER JANUARY 2021 - ISSUE # 338 Real Bridge Online Seen above in screenshots are Anthony and Norma Griffith, John Sylvester, Len Eagle and of course Simon Arcand and Ann Mau, PEC Administrators COUNTY DUPLICATE BRIDGE County duplicate bridge players have found a cure to the loneliness and isolation of the current pandemic: over 40 players from the Wellington and Picton areas are now meeting online twice a week for a friendly session of bridge. We are using the new RealBridge.online platform. RealBridge takes online bridge to the next level, with built-in video and sound, bringing the true face-to-face experience online: See and speak to your opponents - just like face-to-face bridge. Bid and play using a modern, intuitive interface. Connect with everyone at the table, or play with screens. Players participate in a regular game with their own electronic device in their own homes. The director moves them virtually from table to table in a very smooth-for-the-knees migration. Nobody dreads the infamous table located directly under that cold downdraft. The group has been enjoying the game since mid-November and numbers keep increasing. New players are always welcome. Even though many players are not technically savvy, no worries, we have helped them navigate through the various options offered by this powerful online bridge platform. We have conducted online training sessions so that our newbies know what to expect at their first regular game. Positive comments have been overwhelming. It is so wonderful to sit and chat face-to-face with our bridge friends who we have not seen since March! And, of course, we are playing bridge! If you are interested in playing, send an email to PECBridge2020@gmail.com and we will send you some instructions. Come and play with us! NEW YEAR, NEW BEGINNING...THINGS WILL GET BETTER JANUARY 2021 - ISSUE # 338 Photo & Info by Sheila Ascroft 2 Tundra swans in front, Mute swans behind - Wellington Trumpeter swans are rare and have a bright yellow tag. We had 2 here last winter. Both it and Tundra have black beaks; Mute have orange. Tundra used to be called Whistling for the sound its wings make. There are 3 Tundra right now in the harbour; one’s a juvenile. Some Mute swans (gift from the Queen to Ottawa in 1967 and lived on the Rideau River for many decades) have escaped over the years and feral flocks now exist. The flight feathers of cygnets are normally clipped in the spring, but occasionally one or two get missed. There are only about 900 Trumpeters left in Ontario. A reproduction program started at Wye Marsh few years back and has seen some breeding success. Originally native to Ontario, the Trumpeter swan disappeared from Eastern Canada early in the 20th century. Restoration efforts were initiated in the early 1980's to reintroduce the Trumpeter swan to its former range. Through conservation efforts the Ontario, population has now reached 1000, with at least 131 breeding pairs, and the future looks bright. Bill & Nancy Pennell 416-707-7949 Anyone who has ever dressed a child will love this one! (Sent in by Bob Hicks) Did you hear about the Wellington teacher who was helping one of her kindergarten students put on his boots? He asked for help and she could see why.. Even with her pulling and him pushing, the little boots still didn't want to go on. Finally, when the second boot was on, she had worked up a sweat. She almost cried when the little boy said, "Teacher, they're on the wrong feet." She looked and sure enough, they were. It wasn't any easier pulling the boots off than it was putting them on. She managed to keep her cool as together they worked to get the boots back on - this time on the right feet. He then announced, "These aren't my boots.” She bit her tongue rather than get right in his face and scream, "Why didn't you say so?" like she wanted to. And, once again she struggled to help him pull the ill-fitting boots off his little feet. No sooner did they get the boots off than he said, "They're my brother's boots. My mom made me wear'em." Now she didn't know if she should laugh or cry. But she mustered up the grace and courage she had left to wrestle the boots on his feet again. Helping him into his coat, she asked "Now, where are your mittens?" He said, "I stuffed'em in the toes of my boots." Her trial starts next month. Wellington on the Lake Residents’ Association 30
