MARCH 2020 ISSUE #328 Inside WOLRA Here it is almost March and we are, hopefully, anticipating the arrival of Spring in WOTL. Spring will be an active time and we hope everyone is looking forward to another beautiful summer in Prince Edward County. Your Board has been active in the past few months working to accomplish things for our residents and actively planning for a busy time to come. Just to recap, we finally have the auxiliary parking lots lights installed and working; the HVAC system in the Rec Centre seems to be working well and hopefully this will continue in the Spring and Summer months. The electricity has been fixed in the kitchen; the worn chairs have been replaced in the Library; and the washroom doors now open out to improve accessibility. A new bar and countertop is in the planning and costing stage and should be completed this Spring. We also added a TV in the exercise room, a sound bar to the TV at the back of the main hall and a subwoofer and new amp to the main system with the older amp earmarked for the Aquafit groups. We had beautiful new dart cabinets built by Roy Perkin that are being used by the new dart league, and more cabinets are likely on the way. We have had some new speakers and formats for Coffee Mornings and we have a new Committee in place to organize this year’s Christmas party. We have also established our Landscaping, Entrance Beautification and RC Committees to work on projects this Spring. They will work with Frontier to finish our Park, improve our landscaping and complete the parkette at Empire and Prince Edward, and decide on the fate of the hut and the entry into the community. So, we have some things done but more things are on the way. Our Membership Campaign begins on March 24th (see page 24) and we would like all residents in WOTL to sign up for the new Membership year. We will be formally instituting a bylaw change, that will be discussed in April and voted on in May. This change is required to remedy the issue that Directors’ terms end on June 30th, the AGM is in early July and they need to be the same date to effectively, with continuity, establish incoming Boards. More to come on this topic. And speaking of incoming Boards, we have established a Nominating Committee, chaired by our past President Elaine Jackson, to conduct a search for two new Directors. You will recall that we nominated Doug Little and Paul Denault, who volunteered to replace the Directors who could not complete their terms for personal reasons. These positions must be filled according to our Bylaws and Policies and new Directors must be in place for our next year beginning in July. Elaine Jackson will be looking for candidates, so this is your opportunity to join the Board and participate in the management and continual improvement of our community. More to come on this in the coming months. Finally, we have a lot of work planned for the Spring and the first item is the upcoming vote on the Spring Capital Projects. I have heard some confusion on this vote since the Membership approved these projects in our WBE Support Agreement with Sandbanks in October. Yes, WOLRA Membership approved the Shuffleboard court repairs, the Tennis court repairs, the Pool Table rebuild and the Shade Structure construction, but we still must vote to approve the expenditures for each project, since they are over $2000 and must be approved by the Membership. Continued next page... Wellington on the Lake Residents’ Association 4
MARCH 2020 ISSUE #328 Inside WOLRA Continued from previous page… You will find on pages 16 and 17 of this publication a description and the cost estimates for each project, and the costs for these projects will be split 50/50 with Frontier. Each of the projects is subject to Membership approval of funds. Monthly, we will publish on the website and in the Neighbourly News detailed descriptions of the projects. It is our expectation that we will have a fully informed Membership and we will proceed to voting for approval of the expenditures at the April 14th General Meeting. The voting process will contain a two week online vote, from April 1st to April 14th, through the Member section of our website (www.wolra.ca) and then these votes will be tallied with proxies and the live Membership paddle votes during the General Meeting. We hope that this process will be open, transparent and engage as many Members as possible to have their say in what we spend our money on. Remember, this will not be a call for money, but rather a vote on how to spend the money we already have available. No additional monies will be required to fund these projects if they are all approved. So, please watch for articles in the Neighbourly News and on our website prior to the April vote. If you have questions about these projects or their funding please ask one of us on the Board. You can email wolraboard@gmail.com, or give any Director a call (http://www.wolra.ca/mainstream/board2019- 2020.html) and your questions will be answered to the best of our ability. Let’s launch into Spring with a positive outlook and move ahead with plans to make our community a better place for all residents. Please enjoy what is left of winter, and we look forward to an exciting time ahead of us in WOTL. Derek Mendham, WOLRA Board of Directors SPEAKER’S CORNER February 24th - PROTECTING YOURSELF FROM FRAUD It was an impressive full house at the Speaker’s Corner presented by Community Care for Seniors, hosted by Rick Stevens, with speakers OPP Constable Aaron Miller along with Coreen Reynolds and Bryce Cleave of CIBC Picton. They brought cookies and coffee in addition to supplying useful information, handouts, interesting anecdotes and answering many questions from the crowd. I know you went out with him last week, and I wanted to talk with you about him before I give him my answer." Edna: "Well, I'll tell you. He shows up at my apartment punctually at 7pm, dressed like such a gentle- man in a fine suit, and he brings me such beautiful flowers! Then he takes me downstairs, and what's there but a luxury car... a limousine, uniformed chauffeur and all. Then he takes me out for dinner... a marvelous dinner... lobster, champagne, dessert, and after-dinner drinks. Then we go see a show. Let me tell you, Dorothy, I enjoyed it so much I could have just died from pleasure! So then we are coming back to my house and he turns into an ANIMAL. Completely crazy, he tears off my expensive new dress and has his way with me two times!" Dorothy: "Goodness gracious! So you are telling me I shouldn't go out with him?" Edna: "No, no, no... MARCH 2020 ISSUE #328 WOTL Matters COORDINATOR VACANCIES FOR 2020 Our community has a great number of activities that we all can enjoy. These activities, however, depend on activity coordinators to organize, schedule, communicate and maintain the event. Going into this spring, we have three activities that presently do not have a coordinator in place making each activity at risk of not operating this coming year. Our community is looking for a person or group of persons to take on the coordination of Bocce, BINGO and a new Aquafit program we are looking at launching this May/June. As it stands, we have had two people step forward to work on a coordinating team for Bocce, but we could still use a few more on that committee. Bingo and Aquafit still remain vacant. To be clearer on the new Aquafit program, it is our hope to add two 3 day sessions between 8:00 and 8:45 am. These sessions will augment what is already in place and does not affect them. However, the new sessions will provide 20 new openings for this desired activity. In each case, the outgoing coordinator is available to provide training and guidance regarding the activity…there is no need to reinvent the wheel. If you are interested or have questions about the positions, please contact me (613) 503-1113 or email doug.little11@gmail.com. Doug Little The Wellington on the Lake Golf Course has published its Golf Membership for the upcoming year as follows: ATTENTION If renewed BEFORE March 15th GOLFERS Weekday $1225 Full $1375 Full Couple $2550 Weekday Couple $2250 If renewed AFTER March 15th Weekday $1275 Full $1425 Full Couple $2650 Weekday Couple $2350 We would like to try to leverage the Wellington on the Lake purchasing power and propose to the owners of the WOTL GC a 20% discount for residents of WOTL. In order to do so, we need to know how many residents would commit to purchasing a Golf Membership. If the numbers are significant, then we can make the proposal to the owners of the golf course. Ken Killingbeck has prepared an electronic survey on the WOLRA website (https://forms.gle/ QU24r2bcm1uehttdA). If interested, please respond to the survey no later then March 20th. MARCH 2020 ISSUE #328 WOTL Matters APRIL VOTE INFO - PARK IMPROVEMENTS SHUFFLEBOARD COURTS REPAIR Want to spend more time outdoors, enjoying the summertime, engaging with VOTE your friends and neighbours playing shuffleboard? This fast paced easy to YES learn sport is just the exercise to keep you active during the warm summer months. The courts are available for play as we offer a Tag Draw, competitive, very informal, get together Thursday mornings at 10am, offering lots of laughs and instruction if you are new to our sport. The other session, on Tuesday mornings, is also a Tag Draw, but will be more competitive, with points awarded during the season at the end of which there will be an open competition to award our season champions, a must-do event. We are at a point where the 4 courts are in much need of repair, as the concrete bed has shifted causing the discs to skip across the surface. The actual court surface shows signs of wear mostly due to the seasonal changes, i.e. summer heat to winter snow and ice impact on the surface. This work can be completed during the spring by a qualified company in the region with a shared cost. We ask you to VOTE YES on our proposal during the online voting from April 1st up to the General meeting on April 15th. MARCH 2020 ISSUE #328 WOTL Matters APRIL VOTE INFO continued... SNOOKER TABLE MAJOR REFURBISHMENT After surveying the members of the Snooker Club for options on refurbishing/replacing our Snooker table, the WOLRA Board has selected to have our table refurbished. This option was recommended by some of the Snooker Club members for the following reasons: The Snooker table is an antique having been manufactured about 70 years ago and should be preserved. The Snooker table was manufactured by the Riley Company in VOTE YES England and is arguably the best built table in the world. The table is of regulation size as used in professional tournaments and preferred by some of the Snooker members for playing on. The major refurbishment will bring the table back to almost new condition. The Snooker players who have played on the table for up to 25 years consider it as part of our community. MARCH 2020 ISSUE #328 WOTL Matters RELAY FOR LIFE ANNUAL CANCER FUNDRAISER - 2020 Every year Prince Edward County participates in the Cancer Society’s Relay for Life program and for most of those years Wellington on the Lake has had a team present at this event and been a major fundraiser. Last year we were the 2nd highest fundraising team. This money raised goes directly into cancer research projects and support programs for people dealing with cancer. Given the high incidence of cancer in our age group it truly is a worthy and vital cause. Having organized our team for the past 4 years I think its time to give the team a new face, so am looking for someone who sees the importance of this fundraiser to step up and take over. The actual event takes place at the beginning of June and this year the plan is for it to be at Wellington’s LeHigh Contributed by Simon Arcand (Essroc) Centre. Our fundraising efforts normally start up in April. It’s not a huge commitment, but it does require some- one to coordinate things. MARCH 2020 ISSUE #328 WOTL Matters A 4-YEAR-OLD'S FIRST PAYCHECK Here's a heart-warming story about the bond that formed between a little 4-year-old girl and some construction workers. It will show you that we all can make a difference when we give a child the gift of our time. A young family moved into a house next to a vacant lot. One day, a construction crew turned up to start building a house on the empty lot. The young family's 4-year-old daughter naturally took an interest in all the activity going on next door. She spent much of each day observing the workers. Eventually the construction crew, all of them "gems-in-the-rough" more or less, adopted her as a kind of project mascot. They chatted with her, let her sit with them while they had coffee and lunch breaks. They gave her little jobs to do here and there to make her feel important. At the end of the first week they even presented her with a "pay envelope" containing $10. The little girl took this home to her mother who suggested that she take her $10 "pay" she'd received to the bank to start a savings account. When the girl and her mom got to the bank, the teller was equally impressed. She asked the little girl how she had come by her very own pay check at such a young age. The little girl proudly replied, "I worked last week with a real construction crew building the new house next door to us." "Oh my goodness gracious," said the teller, "and will you be working on the house again this week, too?" The little girl replied, "I will, if those a-holes at Lowes ever deliver the f-ing drywall" Contributed by Jerry Puklicz Wellington on the Lake Residents’ Association 21
MARCH 2020 ISSUE #328 UPCOMING ANNUAL GARAGE SALE In previous years the residents of Wellington on the Lake held a GARAGE Garage & Bake Sale the first Saturday in May. This event attracts people from all over The County and beyond, and generates SALE substantial Money to be used in our community. This year it was decided to hold the sale on Saturday, May 16th which falls on the May long weekend. Hopefully we will have more reliable weather and also attract some of the many tourists visiting the area. For this event to be successful, we need volunteers for various jobs, we need inventory to sell and of course baked goods. The first meeting of all the volunteers will take place Thursday, April 16th 2-3:30 in the main hall of the Rec Centre. So mark May 16th on your calendars for the sale, collect your unwanted items as you spring clean and come out to the volunteers meeting April 16th. It’s a good way to meet new people, give back to your community and have fun doing it! For more info please contact me, Brenda Little at 613-503-1113 or Brenda.little20@gmail.com PLEASE BE READY TO HELP The Celebration of life Committee would like to thank all those who have added their names to our list of volunteers. If you haven’t been called to help us, you definitely will be. BUT...you know the old saying “many hands make light work”? We’re appealing to all residents to sign up to assist us in making a time of grieving just a little easier. This is such a worthwhile endeavour, you won’t be sorry to become part of this activity. Note if you are a neighbour or a friend of someone for whom a Celebration of life is being planned, you are encouraged to volunteer for just that particular celebration. We can always use the help and it will be most appreciated by the family. To add your name please call Kelly x2747, Charlotte x3569, Norma x3722, or Robyn x2563. MARCH 2020 ISSUE #328 New Neighbours & Phone # Changes OUR NEW NEIGHBOURS PHONE NUMBER CHANGES No new neighbours this past month. John & Nora Meulenaar x5809 There are women in many countries who made history in the fight for women's rights and equality. While in 1909 the Socialist Party of America organized a Women's Day on February 28, 1909, in New York, German revolutionary Clara Zetkin proposed at the 1910 International Socialist Woman's Conference that March 8th be honoured as a day annually in memory of working women. Women's suffrage in Canada occurred at different times in different jurisdictions and at different times to different demographics of women. Women's right to vote began in the three Prairie provinces in 1916. By the close of 1922, all the Canadian provinces, except Quebec, had granted full suffrage to white and black women. Newfoundland, at that time a separate country, granted women suffrage in 1925. Women in Quebec did not receive full suffrage until 1940. MARCH 2020 ISSUE #328 Upcoming Events This past Valentine's Day, Patrick Swayze did not attract an audience and nobody came to watch a movie with him as a main actor. I interpreted it as not a lacking of interest for movies with him but rather a deep understanding for love and friendship with partners, family and friends. I hope everybody had a great day or evening celebrating all the good things that come from love and friendship. In March we will celebrate International Women's Day with the movie EVITA, the story of the "First Lady of Argentina" - Eva Perón. "María Eva Duarte (7 May 1919 – 26 July 1952), better known as María Eva Duarte de Perón, Eva Perón and Evita, was the wife of Argentine President Juan Perón (1895–1974) and First Lady of Argentina from 1946 until her death in 1952. She was born in poverty in the rural village of Los Toldos, in the Pampas, as the youngest of five children. At 15, she moved to the nation's capital of Buenos Aires to pursue a career as a stage, radio, and film actress. She met Colonel Juan Perón in1944 during a charity to benefit the victims of an earthquake in San Juan, Argentina and the two were married the following year. Juan Perón was elected President of Argentina in 1946; during the next six years, Eva Perón became powerful within the pro-Peronist trade unions, primarily for speaking on behalf of labour rights. She also ran the Ministries of Labour and Health, founded and ran the charitable Eva Perón Foundation, championed women's suffrage in Argentina, as well as the nation's first large-scale female political party, the Women's Peronist Party." Please join us to honour women and International Women's Day with a viewing of the movie EVITA on Friday, March 6th, 4-6pm. Christine Trulsen P.S. The date for the April movie is Friday, April 3rd, from 4 to 6 pm. Movie TBA. Email: centralgaragedoors@gmail.com Website: www.centralgaragedoors.com Wellington on the Lake Residents’ Association 29

MARCH 2020 ISSUE #328 UPDATE Our summer trip is booked. Thursday, July 16th we will be visiting Westben Barn Theatre in Campbellford again, this time for a Broadway musical medley. Every- body had so much fun last year listening and dancing to ABBA. This time it will be the new musical Summer; the story of Donna Summer, and Beautiful by Carole King. Get carried away by Queen’s Bohemian Rapsody, Rocket Man by the famous Elton John and of course Stayin’ Alive by the Bee Gees. There are a few tickets left, don't miss your opportunity for a nice summer day outing, leaving by 10 am, back by dinner time. For the trip to Montreal including visiting Upper Canada Village and the trip to Toronto to see the New Year's show "Salute to Vienna" at Roy Thomson Hall, we did not have enough interest. All signed up travelers for the Agawa Canyon in September/October are excited to go, contracts are signed and we all hope for brilliant colours and nice weather for our 5-day trip. Please stay tuned for an upcoming meeting of the Travel Club in June; the date needs to be confirmed. We will also be present at the Activity Signup Day on April 25th for more information. Christine Trulsen, christinetrulsen@gmail.com along with Debbie and Gail SNOOKER CLUB OVERLOAD This year the Snooker Club has had more people wanting to play than we have time for in our Monday time slot. We had 40 regular players on Mondays, then stretched the regular players to 44 resulting in a Monday that is too long. This year we have 53 people who wanted to be regular players but could only put some of them on the spares list. We have 18 people on the spares list who would like to play more. Also, with more people moving in the overload will only get worse. I would recommend that a volunteer start a 2nd club (perhaps on Wednesdays) to accommodate all the people who want to play. I will run the Monday Snooker Club for one season (2020/2021), then we will need someone to volunteer to take over, with help from the volunteers we have now.
