Starting from the first temple in Tokushima, the land of awakening, finishing in Kanagawa for the last temple may allow you to experience the abundant natural surroundings of Shikoku. Admire the scenery not only on foot but also from the luxury train running through Sanuki Plains, all the way to the beautiful emerald waters of the Yoshino River. ITINERARY JAPAN DAY 01 - 19 MAY (SUN) - SINGAPORE OSAKA | TOKUSHIMA Flight: Singapore / Osaka SQ 618 0125/0905 (6h 40m) Upon arrival, transfer to Tokushima by bus. It is located on the eastern side of the island of Shikoku, connected to mainland Japan by the Akashi-Kaikyo and Naruto Bridges. It will be around two and a half hours drive with beautiful natural scenery along the way. Sightseeing in Naruto for the big swirl. This occurs along the Shikoku coast of the Naruto Strait, and are created by the large volumes of water moving between the Seto Inland Sea and the Pacific Ocean between high and low tide, combined with the unique underwater geography of the narrow strait. Enjoy welcome dinner at hotel. Accommodation: Renaissance Naruto Resort Meals: Dinner DAY 02 - 20 MAY (MON) - TOKUSHIMA Start the journey from visiting temple No. 1 Ryozenji Temple (霊山寺), No.2 Gokurakuji Temple (極楽寺) and No.3 Konsenji Temple (金泉寺). Temples are 20 minutes to an hour and a half apart. Estimated total walking time approx. 2 hours Then travel by bus to No.6 Anrakuji Temple (安楽寺), the training temple of the priest Honen (1133 – 1212), who established the Jodo (pure land浄土) sect in Japan. ITINERARY JAPAN DAY 04 - 22 MAY (WED) - TOKUSHIMA | KAGAWA After breakfast, drive to Sanroku station to take cable car to No. 21 Tairyuji Temple (太龍寺). This is the longest ropeway in western Japan, with a large car that holds 101 passengers. It takes about 10 minutes to reach the mountain ridge. After lunch, visit No. 23 Yakuoji Temple (薬王寺), No. 22 Byodoji Temple (平等寺) & No. 20 Kakurinji Temple (鶴林寺) on coach. Visit Gotoguji Temple – Cats Temple, where there are countless of maneki-neko, the lucky charms which is believed to bring good luck to the owner. Transfer to Kagawa for dinner and stay at the Japanese style ryokan. Accommodation: Kotohira Kadan Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner DAY 05 - 23 MAY (THU) - KAGAWA Today we will drive around 1.5 hrs to start from visiting No. 75 Zentsuji Temple (善通寺). This is the birthplace of Kobodaishi, one of the three hallowed grounds along with Kongobuji in Koyasan and Toji in Kyoto. Then continue to No. 66 Unpenji (雲辺寺), No. 69 Jinne-in Kannon-ji Temple (観音寺) and No. 72 Mandaraji Temple (曼荼羅寺). Estimated walking time approx. 3 hours. Accommodation: Kotohira Kadan Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner DAY 06 - 24 MAY (FRI) - KAGAWA In the morning, explore the Konpira Shrine and transfer to Kotohira Station for the sightseeing train to Oboke. The train will run through rustic scenery of Sanuki Plains, all the way to the beautiful emerald waters of the Yoshino River. Enjoy lunch on the train. Ingredients are from mountains, rivers and seas of Kagawa and Tokushima. Optional activity in the afternoon: Boat ride in Oboke. Visit Iya Kazura Bridge, the largest and most popular of the remaining bridges, stretches 45 meters across the Iya River at the center of the valley. ITINERARY JAPAN DAY 07 - 25 MAY (SAT) - KAGAWA | TOKUSHIMA | OSAKA SINGAPORE In the morning, transfer to temple No. 88 Okuboji Temple (大窪寺) . It is here that Kobo Daishi left his walking stick (enshrined here) and where many pilgrims follow suit and leave theirs too. Many also claimed to have been miraculously cured while on the trails. But to complete our “circle”, transfer back to No. 1 Ryozenji Temple (靈山寺) for full blessings (結願) in Tokushima. Drive about 2.5 hrs to Osaka and free at leisure before flight back home.
