In the search to understand the common mechanisms by which Lewy bodies are produced and neurons subsequently degenerate, researchers could end up unlocking a cure for multiple diseases. She joined the American Brain Foundation board of directors in January 2020 to help raise disease awareness in the public conscience. April 21, 2021 Meet Sasha After a severe head injury during a soccer game, Sasha had her first seizure. She was diagnosed with Complex Partial and Simple Partial Seizures, and later found out that she had drug-resistant epilepsy. Medication couldn’t control her seizures. “Life isn't meant to be lived taking multiple medications and having seizures you can't control,” she says. Now, Sasha lives with a device in her skin that helps reduce her seizures. But it’s not a cure—there is no cure for epilepsy yet. Your support can help researchers discover future treatments and cures for brain diseases like epilepsy. 8
April 21, 2021 Help people like Maureen Maureen Kessler was a passionate high school English teacher before she started experiencing a number of confusing symptoms, eventually resulting in her early retirement. After suffering for seven years, bouncing from specialist to specialist, she finally received a diagnosis: Lewy body dementia (LBD). “With Lewy body dementia, the earlier you catch it, the more you can be aware and get tools to help you cope with living with this,” she says. “But now, I'm past that point.” Maureen knows her delayed diagnosis affected her treatment options and care, but your support will help others get the answers and treatment they need sooner. 9
