THE APPROACH TO GOD Prelude Silciliano Georg Schumann Aaron David Miller, Organist Invitation to Lent Lynn Barger Elliott Leader: The theologian Thomas Merton once said, “We are not converted only once in our lives but many times, and this endless series of large and small conversions leads to our transformation in Christ.” People: Tonight, we begin where we all began, in the dust. Leader: And we gather at the table, where we are all invited and reminded of a heavenly banquet that is yet to come. People: So as we enter into this season tonight, let us open our lives to conversion, making space for God to create transformation within us. Opening Prayer Mark Barger Elliott Leader: Gracious and Loving God, you called us forth from the dust of the earth. People: Look upon us as we enter these forty days and bless our journey as we walk towards rebirth and resurrection. Leader: As you breathed your spirit into our lives at our creation, let us open our lives to you once again, that your Spirit might bring us renewal and new life. People: Lift from our hearts all that obscures your presence. Guide us from fear to trust, anger to love, and doubt to faith. Leader: Rekindle hope in our hearts and draw us near to your presence as we draw near to you. People: We pray this in your son’s name, Amen. Hymn My Song is Love Unknown Love Unknown Tim Bruett, Soloist 3

Do not cast me away from your presence: do not take your holy spirit from me. People: Create in me a clean heart, O God. Leader: Give me the joy of your help again: and strengthen me with a willing spirit. O Lord open my lips: and my mouth shall proclaim your praise. People: Create in me a clean heart, O God. Leader: The Word of the Lord, People: Thanks be to God. Meditation 21 Stations Mark Barger Elliott 4
THE RESPONSE TO GOD Blessing of the Ashes — from A Liturgy for Ash Wednesday, by Rex A.E. Hunt Leader: Ash Wednesday invites us to come back to earth. To wonder at the gift of life, my life, our life with the earth, our shared existence. People: These ashes were once trees and shrubs, and places where life was lived to its fullest. Once they were full of life. Now they are black and grey. Dry. Lifeless. Leader: These are ashes worth wearing. May we accept this gift. And be blessed. And be assured we will be different at the end of this season. We will be transformed, for from the burnt ashes will spring the green shoot of life. Virtual Imposition of Ashes Remember you are dust, and to dust you shall return. Believe the Good News: God longs to breath the Spirit into your life. Solo Ave Verum Louis Vierne Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum; Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; benedicta tu in mulieribus, blessed art thou among women, et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Jesus [Christus]. and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus [Christ]. Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, Holy Mary, Mother of God, ora pro nobis peccatoribus, pray for us sinners, nunc et in hora mortis nostrae. Amen. now and at the hour of our death. Amen. 5

Leader: It is truly right and our greatest joy. . .who forever sing to the glory of your name: People: Holy, holy, holy, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosannna in the hightest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Leader: You are holy, O God of majesty, and blessed is Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord. . . Continue to hear us as we pray together the prayer Christ taught us, saying together: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. Words of Instituition To participate, prepare your own table with bread, crackers, or goldfish crackers and juice, wine, or even grapes. Use what you have at hand; Jesus used ordinary things—the basic elements of water, bread, and wine—to proclaim the extraordinary love of God. 6
