YOUTH GREEN DEAL ECO-CAMP: “Eco-Resistance” Bethlehem, Palestine, 10-20 July BACKGROUND OF THE YOUTH EXCHANGE Youth Green Deal (YGD) is a project aiming to build the capacity of youth organizations promoting volunteering in the Mediterranean area. In this project we focus on our work with local communities who are doing environmental work. So looking at how our volunteer projects can support environmental work: reducing the effects of climate change; inspire volunteers and local communities to mitigate climate change and lead sustainable lifestyles. By working together with various organizations we also want to focus on the Mediterranean/global dimension of climate issues. This project is created by organizations that are part of the MIDI working group of SCI (Service Civil International www.sci.ngo). VSFr Tunisia is the lead organisation responsible for the overall coordination of the project but all partners are collaborating in the implementation of the project: CCIVS (global network of IVS organisations www.ccivs.org), SCI Catalonia (www.scicat.org), SCI France (www.sci-france.org), SCI Belgium (www.scibelgium.be), SCI Italy (www.sci-italia.it), SSD Jordan, EVO Morocco and Al-Shmoh Cultural Centre Palestine. More specifically, the project consists of 3 trainings (in Tunisia, Jordan and Belgium), 4 youth exchanges (in Catalonia, Tunisia, Palestine and Morocco), a research project and a final conference taking place in Tunisia. This Call for Participants regards the youth exchange in Palestine, which will take place in the city of Bethlehem in the West Bank from the 10th to the 20th of July 2022. It will bring together a group of 20 young people (18-30 years old) who will work with and support the local community in its environmental work as well as learn from each other and about environmentalism in the Palestinian context.
METHODOLOGICAL APPROACH A main aim of the youth exchange is to build the first eco-home in an environmental village, which is still to be created. Together, we will re-introduce past construction methods (such as building mud brick houses) back into the community as well as newer sustainable methods to keep up with it. In this way, we will together enhance the chances of the Palestinian communities that are in risk of eviction from their land (by using cheap and available resources) as well as preserve the natural environment for future generations. The main methodology of this youth exchange is therefore to return to the construction methods of the past and in particular to build bricks out of mud. We use this method because it allows for communities with few resources to build permanent structures using the soil beneath their feet. It is ecologically sustainable and the building can be done using the natural resources in the surrounding area. Mud brick structures keep the temperature relatively cool when it is hot outside and insulate warmth at night, which makes it beneficial for the warm Palestinian summers. In addition, mud bricks have no negative impacts on but are instead a component and thus friend of the environment. It takes a lot of people and energy to carry out such work so part of the strategy is also to mobilize the community to resist discriminatory planning laws and other aspects of the Israeli occupation, which attempts to force the Palestinians off from their land while destroying their cultural identity in the process. Lastly, the youth exchange will provide plenty of opportunities for the participants to meet and work with Palestinians as well as include a study part making the participants able to reflect on these meetings. The final result will be a research report based on what the participants encounter and learn, which can be published and shared with others.
Al-Shmoh Cultural Center Al-Shmoh Cultural Center opened in 2001 and serves Masara and its surrounding villages by offering a wide range of cultural activities addressed to youth, women and children. During the years, the center has proposed movie screenings, children’s activities and organized special events such as commemoration and sports tournaments. At the beginning of July, the Center organized the fourth summer camp for the children of the village. The center especially focuses its work on cultural heritage and collective identity including everyday resistance. These activities also connect daily life activities of farmers and shepherds as examples of quiet resistance towards the Israeli occupation. Its activities go beyond the borders of the country and network with other groups and non-violent movements who share similar values to struggle against injustices. The Popular Struggle Coordination Committee (PSCC) Part of the youth exchange will take place in The Popular Struggle Coordination Committee (PSCC), which was formed by prominent activists in the Popular Committees from all over the Occupied Territories and across the Palestinian political spectrum. It present a unique form of community-based organization and resistance in the tradition of the first Palestinian intifada. These diverse, non-partisan committees lead community resistance to Israeli occupation in various forms such as marches, strikes, demonstrations, direct actions and legal campaigns, as well as supporting the campaign of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS). The Coordination Committee was formed to enhance a productive communication between the different Popular Committees: from the villages in Ramallah, Bethlehem, of the Jordan Valley and South Mount Hebron to Tulkarem, Nablus, Qalqilya, all suffering of various aspects of the occupation. The committee aims to provide a base for strategic thinking on a wider scale, while retaining the independence and uniqueness of each Popular Committee.

If you have not already done one, you can attend one of the upcoming ones: Cesano Maderno (Monza) 3-5 June, Rome 10-12 June, or Bologna 17-19 June (more information here) • Have previous volunteer experience • Be able to adapt to teamwork as well as stressful and difficult situations • Good command of English language • Have an interest in and/or previous experience in Palestine/Israel and knowledge about the conflict. • Have an interest in and/or previous experience in environmental issues and sustainable construction methods • Share the goals and methods of the sponsoring associations as well as desire to learn from them • Commit to participation for the entire duration of the youth exchange and preferably beyond the experience itself as well. CONDITIONS The project is supported by the Erasmus+ program, which sets the overall financial framework for this training. However, as travel costs for some countries are higher than the money allocated by the Erasmus+ program hence making individual contributions disproportional, we have decided to install a solidarity fund through which part of the travel costs are re-distributed: • Food and accommodation during the training course will be provided by the host, Al-Shmoh Cultural Center. • Travel costs will be reimbursed up to the travel limit set by the EU and if all necessary travel tickets (boarding passes, invoices) are handed in within the agreed time frame. • Other necessary expenses such as visa fees, COVID-tests and special medical insurance will have to be paid by the participants unless otherwise agreed with the sending organisation and after approval by VSFr as the coordinating organisation. • Since the Erasmus+ funding doesn’t cover all the expenses of the eco-camp such as necessary materials, transport during the camp, etc. the extra fee for this camp is 150 Euro
