Academic Information • Core subjects (RE, English, Maths, Science, HaSS, Health&PE) • Streaming in Maths (Extension, Advanced, Mainstream, Enrichment) and English (Mainstream and Enrichment) based on year 7 performance • Maths Space resource • Electives chosen from lists of compulsory SCSA learning areas
Important Information Year 8 Attendance: 90% attendance is the minimum standard • If you require support with attendance, please contact your Head of Year Parent, Student and Teacher Interviews: • Monday 19 April
Homework/ Home Study • Homework is an integral part of your child’s academic program. As a guide, Year 8 students should be spending approximately 1.5 hours on homework each evening. • Please check SEQTA (Dashboard) to see if your child has any set homework. • Homework Club will be run on Tuesday afternoons until 4.15pm in the English Reading Room (commencing week 2 – this week). • Please refer to the Homework Policy on the Welcome page of SEQTA.

Christian Service Christian Service - "A structured program which involves activities which are completed without remuneration undertaken for the benefit of those in need. It involves working for organisations that are not for profit which benefits the wider community". thomas.ryan@cewa.edu.au
Christian Service • Expectation: Completion of 15 hours is a mandatory requirement of Year 8. • Needs to be completed by the conclusion of Term 3 (Friday Week 10). • Please note: At least half of the required hours need to be submitted and verified by the conclusion of Term 2. • Students are responsible for the completion of hours and being sure that they are submitted in time – submissions are to be uploaded onto OneNote.
Christian Service • For Term 1 & 2 students will be required to upload their hours onto SEQTA by Monday Week 10. • Contact will be made with parents/guardians of students who do not upload their hours onto SEQTA/at risk of not completing hours. • Regular visitations with students will occur throughout the year so that they are aware of their unfinished hours. Students can check their completed hours via Direct Message. • School organised opportunities are outlined on the Christian Service Portal on Seqta. However, I would encourage using holidays and pupil free days to complete hours.

Social Interactions During Year 8 Many adolescents... • become increasingly aware of social signals from others - but are not yet able to fully interpret them • have a sense of their social identity growing, shift away from parents to peers • reject authority in favour of independence (frontal lobes are still developing capacity for responsibility) • become increasingly body conscious • crave social interactions in many forms (phone, social media, gaming, in person)

Head of Year 8 Mr Michael Rathmann • Thank you for your support throughout 2020 • We had a successful transition into high school in a difficult year • I encourage students to get involved in College life in 2021 • My role as the pastoral leader of the Year 8 cohort. Please contact myself and/or your child's PC teachers regarding issues at the College • In Year 8, we must be getting the little things right, to ensure we can be prepared for the big things!
Pastoral Care for 2021 THRIVE In 2021, the theme of our Pastoral Program is THRIVE It is our aim throughout this program, which is run by myself and the PC teachers, that students are able to: • Thrive academically • Thrive in their social interactions with peers • Thrive in confidence and belief in their abilities • Thrive in extra-curricular activities
Pastoral Care for 2021 THRIVE 9th March – Goal Setting, Study and Revision Techniques Students will create a study timetable and learn different ways in which they can revise for assessments.
Pastoral Care for 2021 THRIVE Aussie Optimism - These sessions run throughout the entire year - 10 sessions which focus on mental wellbeing, building friendships, positive psychology and teamwork.
