Wrangle Parish News published jointly by The parish church of St Mary & St Nicholas and Wrangle Parish Council Editorial & production Pearl Danby 01205 870613 Design & layout Mrs E Arnold 01205 270352 Email: wranglepc@aol.com Items for the parish news need to be sent to wranglepc@aol.com by the 14th of the previous month It’s Valentines day, another hard frost and a biting south wind. The cattle all bedded and fed, so time to take the dogs for a run. A steady ride round the farm with my collies trotting in front, a good chance to see what’s about, and to do the Big Farmland Bird Count. At least one hundred curlews rose from the grass field I was crossing, and a dozen or so redwings seeking the last few haws off the hedges. A buzzard flew out of the spinney, and four roe deer hinds trotted across the ploughing before leaping effortlessly over the dyke and melting into the wood. Several pheasants erupted from a reedy dyke as the dogs passed close, and a nice flight of twenty or more lapwings looked splendid in the morning sun. A little egret stood sentry at the end of the lake, whilst a grey heron glided silently down on the wetland. Ten mallards, including a white hybrid, flew up off the lake leaving just a pair of coots on the water. A single snipe flew by and a pair of Canada geese, with necks erect, watched us from across the field. As we turned for home a kestrel crossed in front carrying a vole in its talons. I noticed a solitary bird flying erratically some distance away and guessed it was a woodcock – confirmed with the use of binoculars. I know it is Sunday, but it could be the last hard frost of the winter so, although not very popular, I quickly finished flailing the double hedge whist the ground was hard and would carry the tractor. Andrew Higginson The Boston Flood Barrier Gate The Boston Barrier gate is now fully ready and working to give an enhanced level of flood protection to over 13,000 homes and businesses in the town. As the centrepiece of the flood scheme, the barrier gate can be raised in just 20 minutes, responding quickly to threats of North Sea tidal surges. With the whole of the £100m Environment Agency scheme now two-thirds complete, the project will provide Boston with one of the best standards of flood defence outside of London. Once the scheme is fully completed in 2022, flood risk to over 14,000 homes and 800 businesses will be greatly reduced and allow for the effects of climate change for the next 100 years. s
By Force of Circumstances by Malcom Moyes (Front cover of this magazine) This is not a book which attempts to argue that an innocent woman was executed in Lincoln Prison in May 1884, for the alleged poisoning of her husband. The truth of whether Mary Lefley was guilty, or the victim of a miscarriage of justice, will never be known. The intention of the book is not to exonerate, but to understand what happened to an individual caught up in the judicial system of the time and the processes that took an anonymous woman, residing in an anonymous Lincolnshire village, towards national infamy in less than four months. The Wrangle Poisoning Case, in the various accounts, is the narrative of the misadventures of Mary Lefley which, inevitably became cluttered by imagined facts, mangled by mischief and choked up by fanciful invention. The book has a corrective intent to excise the sensational piffle and disingenuous nonsense which began to course through Mary Lefley’s story in a matter of only hours after her arrest, and which continues to do so in print and on the internet today. This story is not just one of a criminal act which led to the death of a Wrangle cottager on a cold February night, it is also one which led to the death of a Wrangle woman, hanged by a rope, made of Italian silk, in Lincoln Prison in May 1884. The book is to be published on 29 March 2021. It will be available on Amazon and from book shops such as Waterstones and Smith’s, as well as for loan from Boston Library. The BBC have taken an interest in the Wrangle Poisoning Case, as part of their next series of ‘Murder, Mystery and my Family’ which will be aired later in the year.

Borough Councillor Pickett reported: Purple bins will be delivered to all properties, for the collection of dry paper and cardboard, from the middle of March. Collections of paper will commence from the beginning of April and is expected to be every three weeks. Council tax will increase by 7%, meaning an increase of around £5.00 for a band D property. The County Councillor was not present. Recreation Field Following discussion, it was resolved not to charge either the Football Club or the Bowls Club any rent for 2020/21 due to the circumstances caused by the pandemic whereby the clubs could not use the facilities. Rents will be charged for 2021/2022. There have been quite a few incidents of fly-tipping at the car park. Around £50.00 worth of mole traps have been stolen from the recreation field, the contractor is still setting traps, but is not too happy that they are being removed. Glass can be mixed in the glass banks when the required one is full. Fly-tipping should be reported to the Borough Council on 01205 314200 Highways The pothole at Sea Lane has been repaired, in a fashion. There are a number of potholes that still need to be repaired. The gullies at Main Road will not be cleared, they are cleaned once a year. Cllr Skinner will report the gully at Joy Hill, which has been blocked for a number of years.
