Welcome to St Mary’s We are so delighted to welcome you here to St Mary’s Church in Worplesdon. This building has served the local community for hundreds of years: for times of celebration, like this evening; in times of need, both personal and nationwide; on regular Sundays, when believers gather to give thanks to God for faith, family and friends. Through the last seventy years, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has epitomised what it means to be a faithful servant both to God and to the people she serves. This church has welcomed Her Majesty and her representatives on special occasions over the years (do ask to be directed to the photographs), so it is a great honour to be able to host this concert, and the lighting of a Platinum Jubilee Beacon, in her honour this evening. A prayer for Her Majesty: Almighty God, the fountain of all goodness, bless our sovereign Lady, Queen Elizabeth, and all who are in authority under her; that they may order all things in wisdom and equity, righteousness and peace, to the honour and glory of your name and the good of your Church and people. Amen. We hope that you have a lovely evening and look forward to seeing you again soon. On Sunday 5th June, please come and join us at our special Jubilee service at St Mary’s at 10.30. All are welcome, especially our young artists in the Parish. As part of the celebrations, we decided to create an art competition drawn from the local schools within Worplesdon Parish, with the winner lighting the Beacon. All the pictures are hung round the church and are a joy for all to see. The judging was led by Ali Mirmak, who is Head of Art and an External Moderator at Hurtmore House, who was extremely impressed with the calibre of the submissions and his and the judges’ comments can be seen in the church. Special thanks must go to the parents and local schools for their support and encouragement to take part: • Worplesdon Pre-School • Wood Street Infant School • Worplesdon Primary School
Hymns THE LORD’S MY SHEPHERD The Lord’s my shepherd, I’ll not want; He makes me lie in pastures green. He leads me by the still, still waters, His goodness restores my soul. And I will trust in You alone, And I will trust in You alone, For Your endless mercy follows me, Your goodness will lead me home. He guides my ways in righteousness, And He anoints my head with oil, And my cup, it overflows with joy, I feast on His pure delights. And though I walk the darkest path, I will not fear the evil one, For You are with me, and Your rod and staff Are the comfort I need to know. PRAISE, MY SOUL, THE KING OF HEAVEN Praise, my soul, the King of heaven; to his feet thy tribute bring; ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven, evermore his praises sing:1 Alleluia, alleluia! Praise the everlasting King. Praise him for his grace and favour to our fathers in distress; praise him still the same for ever, slow to chide and swift to bless: Alleluia, alleluia! Glorious in his faithfulness.
Father-like, he tends and spares us; well our feeble frame he knows; in his hand he gently bears us, rescues us from all our foes. Alleluia, alleluia! Widely yet his mercy flows. Angels, help us to adore him; ye behold him face to face; sun and moon, bow down before him, dwellers all in time and space. Alleluia, alleluia! Praise with us the God of grace. LAND OF HOPE AND GLORY Land of Hope and Glory Mother of the Free How shall we extol thee Who are born of thee? Wider still, and wider Shall thy bounds be set; God, who made thee mighty Make thee mightier yet! JERUSALEM And did those feet in ancient time Walk upon England’s mountains green? And was the Holy Lamb of God On England’s pleasant pastures seen? And did the countenance divine Shine forth upon our clouded hills? And was Jerusalem builded here Among these dark satanic mills? Bring me my bow of burning gold! Bring me my arrows of desire! Bring me my spear! O clouds, unfold! Bring me my chariot of fire! I will not cease from mental fight, Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand, Till we have built Jerusalem In England’s green and pleasant land.
