BABETTE BAKERMANS Reigerstraat 24 119 BANK15 and Blind Walls Gallery have joined forces. Young talent was given the opportunity to create a ‘Blind Wall’, inspired by stories from the city. The building used to function as a cinema. An 100 year old theater canvas was found during the renovation of the building. A special find since these set pieces were often made for a few performances and they were not intended for eternity. Babette Bakermans used the canvas as inspiration for her mural. For the design, she filled the fantasy landscape with elements of the old cinema in order to make the link with the previous function of the building. *You can admire the artwork inside the building. The foodhall is open from Tuesday till Saturday. Based on this new mural, Hedof designed a limited-edition T-shirt in collaboration with Breda sneaker store Epic: a project we aptly named Blind Walls Epic Stories. The T-shirt and mural are inspired by Blind Walls Gallery’s mission: to tell the stories of Breda through street-art. The mural depicts different ways of telling stories; by mobile phone, music, text, a peace pipe and through a dream. STREET ART FRANKEY Markendaalseweg 117 From 2022, the Nieuwe Mark will flow through the city center again. To this end, special green quays are designed that are not only good for the biodiversity in the city, but also reduce heat
stress. To grow this green, Street Art Frankey placed a sun that never goes down, but shines when the real sun is down. This project is co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund through the Urban innovation Actions Initiative. ISAKOV Akkerstraat 16 105 When we asked the owner of this house (Annie van Gils) what she thought should be on her wall, her answer was: “the Maria Hemelvaart church has to return!” Annie has lived in this place all her life and has a lot of special stories about this area. We invited Isakov to fulfil Annie’s wish. He created a design inspired by the Maria Hemelvaart church, which was built at the end of the 19th century, where the Houtmarkt passage is situated now. The church was designed by Juriën van Langelaar and is considered his best design. The church closed in the sixties and eventually demolished, despite local residents protesting against it. ROB EN ROBIN Mols Parking 103 The design is inspired by a story of Annie van Gils, who has lived next to Mols Parking for over 60 years. During her youth, many businesses and traders were situated at this location, which caused an almost constant stream of suppliers delivery trucks. Annie and her friends therefore weren’t allowed to play outside in the neighbourhood. Rob en Robin captured the tight space, crowdedness and automobiles in a striking design, which is an obvious reference to the playing children. The mural also includes an animation that can be seen through Augmented Reality during our (walking) tours.
DADARA Nieuwe Ginnekenstraat 1 102 GINO BUD HOITING Kloosterplein 20 106 A night out at Holland Casino Breda starts with parking your car in the Chassé Parking. From the parking garage you walk through a long corridor where the walls are illustrated with a historic timeline of the building. The building has a rich history, for example, it has served as a monastery, a boys school, a base of the Aviation Command and finally the Holland Casino. The main target group at Holland Casino are people with an Asian background. For this reason, the Fen Shui philosophy is integrated into the building. Can you find all the elements in Gino’s work? *Due to COVID-19 Holland Casino and Chassé Theatre are temporarily closed. You can still admire the artwork via the parking.* SAM VAN DER WEIJDEN Poort van Schoenmakers 101 When artist Sam van der Weijden was living here (2017), he decided to design a mural for his graduation exhibition, based on the history of the building. He found out that the building used to be a city farm, called ‘Het Wit Lam’ (The White Lamb).nUnfortunately, the mural couldn’t be realised back then, because the building was going to be put up for sale. Meanwhile, Guus Welten was working on a book about his family history. His grandmother’s family lived at the farm from 1844 until 1955. During his research, he came across an article in the newspaper about Sam’s graduation project. Guus contacted Blind Walls Gallery and eventually, we were able to realise the mural.
HENNING WAGENBRETH Molenstraat 6 111 The 'Nieuwe Veste' is a library, center for the arts, language school and makers-base in one. People from different backgrounds come together in this cultural market hall. The artwork is therefore about inclusion. Words from different languages serve as a ‘conversation starter’ and form small stories in the (literal) big picture. A nice tool for discussing our similarities and differences with respect. Without differences there can be no evolution nor progress. The design by Henning Wagenbreth is a contemporary reference to Egyptian hieroglyphs. This early writing system combined abstract signs with images, it was rich and colorful. To this day, they inspire our visual language. *You can admire the artwork inside the building. The Nieuwe Veste is open daily. For more info visit nieuweveste.nl* ZENK ONE & MARA 97 PICCIONE Grote Markt The ‘Church Inside Out’ project is a joint initiative of the Grote Kerk and Blind Walls Gallery. Artists create new paintings for the construction fence, inspired by the rich interior of the church. Zenk One (Robin Nas) was inspired by two gravestones in the church of Henricus Coerman and Johan Backx. Robin depicted Henricus as a goat, with some symbols that refer to traveling, heavenly spheres and the divine light. Johan is depicted as a “sitting” lion, with symbols that represent fertility and strength. Mara Piccione is always looking for interesting shapes, for her work she was also inspired by the gravestones. Mara emphasize the Carpe diem spell more than Memento Mori. Carpe Diem is about life as an individual in the here and now; something that belongs more in this day and age.
