Alex Zimmermann • Former South Australian State Performance Program Head Coach & Performance Pathway Officer for Australian Sailing 2016-2019 • World, Continental and National Champion • Elected Peru’s best athlete of the year 2015 & 2017 awarded by the President of the Nation • Distinguished Talent Sports Permanent Resident Visa holder • Commerce Bachelor Degree Majors in Management & Human Resource Management • 20 years of International Sailing Experience (13 World Championships) • WA Optimist Head Coach for 4 years, AOST coach at (Worlds, Europeans, Asian/Oceania’s, North, South American’s)
The Optimist Class • Sailors age range 6 – 15yrs • Largest dinghy sailing class in the world • Over 100 nations competing worldwide • Australia’s fleet at National Champs 150- 300 entries rotating to a different State each year • Class of boat where over 75% of the recent Olympic Medalists started their journeys
• The most inclusive and active Optimist program in Australia • Over 6 different mother-languages spoken amongst team sailors • Amazing network

Expectations- • Tidy rigging area • Parents should help to lift but not help with rigging • ‘Rigged and ready’ times (punctual)! • Ramp and wash down etiquette • briefing debriefing (notebooks, no parents in classroom) • Monday & Tuesday’s Alex’s days off • WSC Social events coming up
• 10 boats slot • Towed by Alex or experienced driver • Volunteers needed to Trailer towing tow coach boats • Everyone to help load to events and tie down the day before towing happens and at events • Everyone to help unload • Priority given to Green Fleet
Volunteers • On Land (green fleet ramp catchers, social events such as after training dinner, Christmas party, WSC gatherings, team t-shirts) • On Water Club Racing (Rescue, Mark Laying, Start / Finish) • Road Towing the coach boat(s) to events • All volunteers to be rostered by a shared online file to be send asap

WSC Green Fleet Program • Requirements: ü Have completed Tackers 1-2-3 (in exceptional cases sailors can bypass Tackers 3 by doing school holiday programs or WSC private sessions instead). ü Complete the Tackers list of competencies. ü Own a fiberglass boat (or be allocated a club one). ü Become a WSC junior member (special rates available, free on year 1). • Goals for the Green Fleet sailors: ü Be competent to sail in 3-16kts. ü Learn how to launch and retrieve without help (through the buddy system). ü Learn the basics of rigging and sail tuning for the conditions without help. ü Learn how to park the boat on the start-line. ü Learn how to hike out in windy conditions. ü Complete full club races in top 30% of the fleet consistently and want to move up to intermediate.
WSC Intermediate Fleet Program • Requirements: ü Have completed the WSC Green Fleet or ticked all their program boxes ü Own a boat and sail in sound racing condition ü Be competent to sail in 3-20kts. • Goals for the Intermediates Fleet sailors: ü Learn the basics rules of sailing. ü Learn to team race. ü Learn how to do roll tacks, double tacks, 360’s. ü Attend to State and Domestic racing events finishing top 3 in at least one event. ü Learn how to bail while hiking out in windy conditions. ü Learn how to kite (heel) the boat downwind. ü Perform consistently in front of at least 10% of open fleet sailors in our combined training or racing.
WSC Open Fleet Program • Requirements: ü Have completed the WSC Intermediate Fleet or ticked all their program boxes ü Own a boat and sail in excellent racing condition ü Excellent boat-handling: roll tacks, double tacks, 360’s. ü Be competent to sail in 3-25kts. • Goals for the Open Fleet sailors: ü Learn the rules of sailing (comprehensively). ü Learn how to be a leader in team racing. ü Attend as many State, Domestic and International racing events. ü Attend training at least 3 days a week. ü Set time aside to work on fitness ü Develop a growth mindset
