Westminster Presbyterian Church A Telling Presence in the City Sunday, January 23, 2022 Corner Window, by Tom Northenscold, photograph Westminster is the church in the world, online and in person. We belong to one another and to God. Thanks be to God!
Preparing for the Word Our service begins with the Prelude, inviting us to prepare for worship. Prelude Psalm 127 from Psalm Interpretations Emma Lou Diemer Joseph Trucano, organ Our Life in Christ The Rev. Dr. Meghan Gage-Finn One: The Lord be with you. All: And also with you. *Call to Worship (from Psalm 100) One: Cry out to God, all the earth; worship with gladness. All: Come into God’s presence with singing. One: For God is gracious; God’s mercy is everlasting. All: God’s faithfulness endures to all generations. One: Let us worship God. *Processional Hymn No. 305 Come Sing, O Church, in Joy! Call to Confession and Prayer of Confession (unison) Holy God, we confess that we have wandered from your path. We accept the systems and cycles of injustice that surround us, forgetting your call to work for human flourish- ing. We fail to protect the earth and its creatures; we overlook our responsibility to welcome neighbors; we hold tightly to our own resources. Forgive us when we stray from your way and lead us forth to embrace your world with love, peace, and justice. Silent Prayers of Confession Worshippers seek and reflect on God’s forgiveness in their own lives. Assurance of God’s Forgiveness One: The mercies of God are from everlasting to everlasting. Hear this good news: in Jesus Christ, we are forgiven and made new. All: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. Alleluia! Amen. *Please stand as you are able.
Listening for the Word A Time with Children Prayer for Illumination Ruth Parten Readings from Holy Scripture Psalm 146 (OT, p. 544-545) Luke 4:14-21 (NT, p. 53) One: This is the Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. Sermon Joining the Mission of Jesus The Rev. Alexandra Jacob Responding to the Word *Hymn No. 773 Heaven Shall Not Wait Pastoral Prayer and the Lord’s Prayer The Rev. David Tsai Shinn Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. Offertory Invitation You are invited to give online via Realm or by placing your donation in the offertory plates as you leave. To learn more about how to make a gift online, please see the back of the bulletin. Thank you for supporting the mission and ministry of Westminster. Offertory Anthem Os Justi Anton Bruckner The mouth of the righteous utters wisdom, and their tongue speaks what is just. The law of God is in their heart: and their feet do not falter. Alleluia. (sung in Latin) Prayer of Dedication for the Offerings Received *Hymn No. 733 We All Are One in Mission
*Charge and Benediction The people respond with “Amen.” *Passing of the Peace Since the earliest days of the Christian Church, worshippers have greeted each other with a sign of peace. All are invited to offer a verbal greeting, such as: “Peace be with you.” One: The peace of Christ be with you. All: And also with you. Postlude Toccata for a Joyful Day Emma Lou Diemer
