Welcome to the latest Copper Press January/February 2019 No. 27 Christmas is already 3 months ago, and we are experiencing a summer like we used to have when I went to High School. I remember it was always the hottest part of summer when we went back to school and I used to hate the afternoon periods if we had to be upstairs in one of the rooms there as it was soooo hot! The lawns and gardens around the village are looking particularly dry and Tauranga is under a “no sprinkler” ban, so there is not much we can do about it, but hope for rain. And just as those words were written, in came the tail end of ‘Oma’, and we have had some rain. Certainly freshens everything up and eases the burden of hand watering for our ground staff. The village has been very quiet over Christmas and new year. We have a lot of people away on cruises and in their motorhomes/caravans and for quite considerable lengths of time too. Mind you, this is a great time of the year to escape and explore our beautiful country. It was a very colourful opening to our petanque court early February and I’m always amazed at how proactive our residents are at dressing up for an occasion. As you will see by the pictures in this edition, it was a fun afternoon and we look forward to hearing more stories from those who give this sport a try. My husband Bruce and myself took a wee break last week to catch the F50’s SailGP racing in Sydney harbour. It helps that our youngest son lives there too! These boats were redesigned in Whangarei NZ, from 6 of the old Americas cup boats post Bermuda and all were the same. Some of the electrical componentry was slightly different, but what this meant was that it really came down to the sailing expertise of the 5 men on board (and one female in the French team J) These boats could get up to 50 knots with the right wind, so it was exciting to watch. We were on Shark Island on the Friday, which is in the middle of Sydney harbour and out on a 4 storey Captain Cook vessel with prime window seats on the Saturday, taking our son and his partner out for the day as well. It was a fantastic event, and considering it was the inaugural one, it went off without a hitch. Excellent organisation. Now, begin reading all about our antics in the last couple of months, and make sure you check out all the gorgeous villas coming on stream in March. With our spacious 2.7m stud heights and rural views, there is something for everyone. Happy reading. 1

Grand French Opening day Wander around any of Provence’s towns and villages and you’re bound to spot groups of French residents enjoying a lazy game of petanque in village squares and on park pathways. It originated in the Provençal village of La Ciotat in the early 1900s, with the goal of tossing or rolling hollow steel balls as close as possible to a small wooden ball called a cochonnet, while standing inside a circle with both feet on the ground. It ’s relaxing to watch and will get you truly into the spirit of this leisurely-paced part of France – but better still: We don’t need to go to France to enjoy the locals, build friendships and play Petanque. Copper Crest Village has our very own Petanque court and we were delighted to celebrate the grand opening on the 7th February 2019. The Red Ribbon was cut by Astrid surrounded by many well- dressed French styled residents. Mushroom & prawn hors d’oeuvres were served around the court, while we were thrilled to have three experienced Petanque representatives, (The Club Captain, President and Coach) from the Tauranga Bay of Plenty Petanque Association. They have welcomed our residents to join and compete in our wider community. Everyone celebrated with a grand opening game which followed onto drinks and a very successful residents BBQ while everyone enjoyed the summer evening with friends. Many happy Petanque days to come. 3
Village Xmas Dinner Christmas Dinner What a wonderful night for everyone. With a huge turnout of residents celebrating the Christmas season together. We enjoyed our decorative Christmas themed tables. Thanks to Lesley and Nancy for the beautiful floral display, and Margaret, Pat K setting the tables. Tasty Thymes catered generous traditional Christmas roast carvery. Followed by entertainer Tony Wellington who was a big hit. It’s always heart-warming to have everyone dressing up and enjoying a merry get together. 4
S ong for a Song We enjoyed celebrating Christmas songs with lots of children from our local day care centre. They arrived walking down our driveway all dressed up as wise men, kings and angels. Their singing was so glorious and lifted our hearts. All of us had a sing along with Keith Bowen on the piano accordion, enjoying the Christmas spirit. George gifted the children a beautiful wooden flying bird for their garden. Jeanette read a delightful story that held their attention right until the end. Then we gifted each of them a special Christmas themed pencil and rubber to carry in their little hands for the journey back down the road still all dressed as wise men, kings and angels. One of the loveliest memories of Christmas. A person who feels appreciated will always do more than what is expected. Testimonial We have had the pleasure of moving into Copper Crest this last month. We looked at a lot of retirement villages and Copper Crest was the best we found. The staff, facilities, and the residents are the best. Our villa is fantastic with a lot of room for 2 bedrooms more than we saw in other retirement villages. The staff have bent over backwards to help us and the residents have made us really welcome. All in all, this is one of the best moves we have made. Very happy to be here. Bruce and Jan Peters 5
Te Teko Raceday 28th January 2019 The Te Teko Races. The Great Copper Crest Residents Annual Event. Anniversary weekend Race day delight! Sixty residents travelled to Te Teko in the air conditioned coach was much needed with the NZ heat wave upon us. Arriving early to get the best spot under the hanging trees and right beside the show arena to admire the horses for the next race. Gazebo’s were set up by the finishing line for everyone to enjoy the shade. TeTeko Race day was so much fun, everyone placing some bets and cheering the horses on. The heat was bearable in the shade and the women’s dresses and hats were elegant. Another lovely annual event that we all look forward to every year. 6
A Perfect Marriage? A man and woman had been married for more than 60 years. They had shared everything. They had talked about everything. They had kept no secrets from each other, except that the little old woman had a shoe box in the top of her closet that she had cautioned her husband never to open or ask her about. For all of these years, he had never thought about the box, but one day, the little old woman got very sick and the doctor said she would not recover. In trying to sort out their affairs, the little old man took down the shoe box and took it to his wife's bedside. She agreed that it was time that he should know what was in the box. When he opened it, he found two crocheted dolls and a stack of money totalling $95,000. He asked her about the contents. "When we were to be married," she said, "my grandmother told me the secret of a happy marriage was to never argue. She told me that if I ever got angry with you, I should just keep quiet and crochet a doll." The little old man was so moved; he had to fight back tears. Only two precious dolls were in the box. She had only been angry with him two times in all those years of living and loving. He almost burst with happiness. "Honey," he said, "that explains the dolls, but what about all of this money? Where did it come from?" "Oh," she said. "That's the money I made from selling the dolls." 7

Norfolk Place 2007 on left 2019 on right Back to work again and after a very slow start to the year, it was nice to have some prospective residents pop in to check out the village. “Tickled Pink” was one of the reactions and “absolutely Beautiful” another. As we get nearer to opening our very last stage in the village, its wonderful to continue to hear these amazing comments about our villa builds. The 29th March will bring about the end of an era of sorts. We started the village in 2006, opening the first 8 villas to market in July 2007. We sold 2 villas, ran into the GFC and it took a long time for us to recoup from that. However, 2019 marks the end of villa builds and we will sit at 156 villas. We will have a wee celebration in April to mark this milestone and also to open the new RV park and caretakers facilities. If you are new to Copper Crest and would like to learn more about the construction history of the village, there are 3 large scrapbooks in the library, kindly put together by Carol Robson, villa 24, which show our progression from start to end of the Community centre build. Please feel free to peruse these. On a lighter note we are heading into March, the first month of autumn, which means our trees will be changing colour and our vineyards will be seeing an abundance of plump grapes. We have a very active wine club here and they meet once a month on a Tuesday night. Its always a very popular and fun evening, with Wine makers travelling from far and wide to enlighten us with the different dynamics of what makes a great wine. Plenty of connoisseurs here at Copper Crest I can tell you!! I love wine, but I also like just eating a nice plump ripe grape, and some residents have big bunches looking very attractive at the moment. There is also an abundance of passionfruit and tomatoes on vines and in the raised vege bins that come with every villa, just another awesome addition to our villas which most people reap huge satisfaction from, without getting a sore back! There are many reasons why you should stop in for a visit here if you are thinking about selling up and moving somewhere which will offer you peace of mind over many matters. Security, companionship, comradery and the knowledge that the care facility will be opening early 2021 and Arvida have an EXCELLENT transfer, policy which will make any moves stress free and seamless. We are here Monday to Friday from 9am to 4pm and we look forward to seeing you at our place! Astrid Martin, Village Manager Happy Easter everyone and we’ll be back again early May.
