Pancake Day Pancake Day is also known as Shrove Tuesday and is happening on 16 February 2021. It happens on a different day every year to mark the start of the Christian festival of Lent. Shrove Tuesday is the beginning of the 40 days leading into Easter, which happens on 12 April in 2020. Lent is traditionally a time of fasting and sacrifice, and often Christian children give things up - such as chocolate. Why do we east Pancakes? The tradition comes from families using up all ingredients in their cupboards so that they can start Lent the next day. The ingredients - eggs, flour and milk - used to be very common things for people to give up for Lent, so it made sense to use them all up. These days it's probably the toppings that we're likely to give up - such as chocolate or sweets! How to make Pancakes Ingredients • 110g plain flour • 200ml milk • 75ml water • 2 eggs Method 1. Sieve the flour into a mixing bowl 2. Crack the eggs and add to the flour 3. Combine the water and milk 4. Add the water and milk mixture to the mixing bowl 5. MIX! 6. Spoon the mixture into a hot pan (enough to cover the bottom) 7. Cook until golden brown and then… 8. FLIP!! 9. Time to dish up and add your favourite toppings Don’t forget to send us a picture of your pancake day creations!
Microwave Mug Cake Did somebody say… chocolate! Ingredients • 4 tbsp self-raising flour • 4 tbsp caster sugar • 2 tbsp cocoa powder • 1 medium egg • 3 tbsp milk • 3 tbsp vegetable oil or sunflower oil • a few drops of vanilla essence or other essence (orange or peppermint work well) • 2 tbsp chocolate chips, nuts, or raisins etc (optional) Method 1. Add 4 tbsp self-raising flour, 4 tbsp caster sugar and 2 tbsp cocoa powder to the largest mug you have (to stop it overflowing in the microwave) and mix. 2. Add 1 medium egg and mix in as much as you can, but don't worry if there's still dry mix left. 3. Add the 3 tbsp milk, 3 tbsp vegetable or sunflower oil and a few drops of vanilla essence and mix until smooth, before adding 2 tbsp chocolate chips, nuts, or raisins, if using, and mix again. 4. Centre your mug in the middle of the microwave oven and cook on High for 1½ -2 mins, or until it has stopped rising and is firm to the touch.
