Friday 30th April 2021 Dear Families, Welcome back to school for Term 2! It is great to be back at QPS and to see all of our QPS staff, students and families again after being away for 7 weeks. I have been at Lara Lake Primary School on a Principal placement for the Unlocking Potential leadership development course that I have been working on since October last year. Lara Lake Primary School has around 740 students and has the You Yangs as their back drop, which was very nice to look at, however, it isn’t as fantastic as looking out at Swan Bay every day. There are 32 grades at Lara Lake and when they had break times or assembly, it was a whole sea of red t-shirts to look at. My work involved working with the Principal and their leadership team to learn about processes that larger schools have in place, developing middle leaders and assisting in the teaching and learning across different year levels. I would like to express a huge ‘Thank you’ to all staff at QPS for supporting and giving me the opportunity to be away from school. It is such a valuable opportunity to focus on learning new things, as well as celebrating and appreciating all the fan- tastic things that we have happening at QPS. Now for some QPS news and announcements: If you happen to be at the front office visiting Helene and Sylvia, make sure you take some time to look at our new ‘Work Of the Week’ (WOW) wall. This wall is a celebration of great work happening in our classrooms each week. Congratulations to those students who are working so hard each and every day to produce your best work and we look forward to seeing work from all of our students up in lights. Chocolate seems to have been a very BIG theme since I have been away. Firstly, I would like to thank all families who have supported our school by selling boxes of chocolates for our Levelled Literacy Intervention Program. This is such a valuable resource for our school to improve literacy outcomes for our students. Secondly, the winners of our chocolate selling raffle were: 1st Prize – a 10kg block of Cadbury chocolate – Scarlett, Gus and Owen. 2nd Prize – a 4.5kg Toblerone - Casey and Harry. 3rd Prize – a box full of Freddos, Caramellos and Toblerones - Sol. There are still a few boxes left to be sold, so if you think that you are able to sell some more, please see Helene. If there are any parents who have a little spare time to help out with covering a bag or two of books for our library, can you please see Helene at the office? The sooner we can get them onto our shelves, the sooner our students can access them. We are very proud to be sending 18 students to the Bellarine and North Geelong District cross country event at Barwon Heads this Friday. We wish them the best of luck in their events. Lightning Premiership is coming up in week 4 of this term for our grade 5/6 students at Portarlington. QPS will be sending one football team and one netball team to compete against other schools. In the next few weeks we will be having some training for these teams to get them prepared. Excitement is starting to creep in as students begin preparations for our production of ‘Beauty and the Beast’. We as starting to hear singing rehearsals during performing arts time and a few dance routines emerging. Keep up the great work and practicing when you can. NAPLAN is coming up in the week beginning the 10 th of May and will run during school times for our grade 3 and grade 5 students. We have noticed that there is quite a number of lost uniform items that are not at school. Can all parents please check their children’s school bags for items belonging to others? Please return to Helene at the front office. Can we remind all students and families to take care of our school equipment before, during and after school? We have no- ticed that some families, young and old are using the table tennis tables to sit on while enjoying the sunshine outside. We hope that you enjoy all the fun events and activities throughout this term and keep yourselves and families well. Melissa Fitzgerald Acting Assistant Principal.
