2020 Membership Information Since 1997, the Youth Environment Council of South Australia (YEC) has provided young people with a voice and opportunities to take action on key environmental issues facing South Australia, with the aim to achieve a more environmentally sustainable future. The YEC strives to be inclusive, representative and democratic. This year, the YEC has a limited number of places available for students in years 7-10. Students from metropolitan and regional areas of South Australia are encouraged to apply. Please read the role statement below and seek your parent’s permission before completing your application. Ensure you complete all required fields in the online application form, found at https://nrmeducation.wufoo.com/forms/2020-yec-membership-application/ You don’t have to submit your application in written format, it can be verbal (e.g. a video or audio file). Be as creative as you like, but you must answer all the questions with whatever format you choose. Up to four files with a maximum of 25MB each can be uploaded through the online form (link above). If larger please burn to disc and post. Remember when posting your application, delivery may take up to 7 days. If you do post your application, please email us at info@yecsa. net.au to let us know you have done so. To apply for the YEC, you must: • be in year levels 7-10 (strictly no students under Yr 7) • have permission from a parent/guardian • have the endorsement from a supportive teacher or principal. The school needs to be comfortable with you being their representative and a teacher must be able to support you through the year with YEC activities. • understand the expectations of the Role of a Representative and agree to them (see below). Role of YEC Representatives: Please be aware that as a member of the YEC you will be expected to: • be able to attend camps (including overnight) and forums (travel subsidy will be provided to students >100km from event venues where transport isn’t already provided) • actively participate in discussions, activities and workshops throughout the year • keep in contact through e-mail and the YEC online forum • take environmental action in your school and or community - supported through YEC • be willing to represent your school and the state in a responsible manner. Youth Environment Council of SA information History: Since 1997, the Youth Environment Council of South Australia (YEC) has provided young people with a voice and opportunities to take action on key environmental issues facing South Australia, with the aim to achieve a more environmentally sustainable future. The YEC is a joint initiative of the Department for Education and Natural Resources Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges. Statewide support and coordination for the YEC are delivered through partnerships with other South Australian Natural Resource Management Boards and environmental agencies. Aims: The Youth Environment Council aims to: • raise youth awareness about our environment • empower and encourage youth to take action on environmental issues • enable students to share sustainability ideas and actions • ensure students see themselves as active citizens today and not just “leaders of tomorrow” • develop skills such as leadership, team work and public speaking • develop a network of youth environmental leaders. Who? Year 7-10 students in South Australia who are passionate about the environment and sustainability. Positions are available through an application process. Applications are available from www.yecsa.net.au Spaces are limited. Why Join? The Youth Environment Council is an opportunity for like-minded students to come together and develop their leadership skills, share their passion and take action for the environment and sustainability. The YEC offers fully funded camps, workshops and online forums to give them the skills and knowledge to run their own environmental action projects in their local community. 2020 Program Thursday 30 April: Sustainability Forum, Adelaide Botanic Gardens, time to be confirmed Monday 1 June - Wednesday 3 June: Leadership Camp, Arbury Park Outdoor School Term 3: Regional Workshop, date and venues to be confirmed dependent on region Online discussion forum: to be used throughout the year between the first and last events. February 2019 Dear Parents/Caregivers, RE Application for Youth Environment Council of SA Your child has shown an interest in applying for the Youth Environment Council (YEC) of South Australia in 2020. Since 1997, the YEC has provided young people with a voice and opportunities to take action on key environmental issues facing South Australia, with the aim to achieve a more environmentally sustainable future. Participation in the Council would involve your child taking part in sustainability forums, an overnight leadership camp and online discussion forums (see program flyer on previous page). The YEC is a joint initiative of the Department for Education and Natural Resources Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges and the activities are 100% funded, so there would be no direct cost to you. Many of these events will take place during school hours in various locations in and around Adelaide. As a parent/caregiver, should your child be successful in their application, you will be responsible for organising transport for your child to attend these events. A transport subsidy is available to students living >100km from Adelaide. At YEC Events, students will be supervised by staff from the NRM Education team of the Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges Natural Resources Management Board. All staff are experienced student mentors, have Dept. for Communities and Social Inclusion Working with Children clearances and have completed First Aid and Child-safe Environments Training. Please have a look over the YEC Flyer and Program and indicate that you support your child’s application for the YEC in 2020 by indicating on the application under Parental Permission.
