FOUNDATIONAL CONCEPTS

THIS HAS NOT BEEN NORMAL REMOTE WORK
This has been extreme work/life integration.

Everyone has been in their own unique situation, from living alone to juggling
family and work, to living in multi-generational households, to single
  parenting and more.
This requires flexibility, adaptability, patience and empathy. It requires a dual
  focus on productivity and people.

THERE IS A SPECTRUM OF REMOTENESS

Many companies were working in virtual teams before the COVID-19 office
shutdowns and will continue to be working in virtual and hybrid teams during
the "next normal". Your relationships with your clients, partners, and suppliers
  are also virtual relationships.

FOUNDATIONAL CONCEPTS

                           DISTANCE BIAS IS REAL
Distance Bias* is our brain's natural tendency to put more importance on the
people and things that are closer to us than those that are farther away. We
must be aware of this and put plans into place to mitigate it.
[*The NeuroLeadership Institute]

Also be aware of Recency Bias - putting more value on the people that you
have communicated with or seen more recently.

FOUR MUST-KNOW AREAS TO BE A SUCCESSFUL VIRTUAL LEADER

It's more than just the tech tools. A leader of hybrid and remote teams must
know how to set expectations, build relationships and culture across distance
and be versed in virtual leadership skills like leading effective virtual meetings,
influencing across distance, and managing remote direct reports.

                Virtual Leadership Success Framework

MINDSET

                                            BE AT CAUSE
In a virtual work environment it's even more important to have an "At Cause"
mentality, to believe that you have the power to influence the system, that you don't
have to be a victim of circumstance.

                            At Cause At Effect
Individuals see themselves as able & Individuals see themselves as being
responsible to make a difference; they bound by the system, a victim of

COMMUNICATION NORMS

                                 COMMUNICATION
    3.
Decide what must be synchronous communication and what can
    be asynchronous
Synchronous - communicating live with another person, expecting a real
time response. Typically phone or video meetings, instant messages or texts.
Asynchronous - not expecting a real time response. Typically, email and
persistent chat (e.g. MS Teams or Slack channel threads).

                       ASYNCHRONOUS COMMUNICATION

Incorporate new software tools (and the communication norms to
go with them) to reduce email overload and meeting fatigue
Workflow / Project Management: Asana, Microsoft Planner, Monday.com
Document Collaboration: Google drive, OneDrive / Microsoft Teams,
        OneNote
        Virtual Whiteboarding: MURAL, Miro

                       SYNCHRONOUS COMMUNICATION
      Virtual Stand-up Meetings
These can happen daily or weekly
The morning works best so that the team is on the same page for what will
be worked on that day or week.

                          VIRTUAL STAND-UP MEETINGS

Ensure Meeting Hygiene
Step #1: always ask yourself if you really need a meeting, or if you can get to
 the outcome in another way
Step #2: prepare a thorough agenda using the 5 Ps

                                     5 Ps Agenda

          1.
Why are we meeting? Do we really need a meeting, or
PURPOSE can it be handled in a different manner?

          2.
PRODUCT What is the specific intended outcome?

          3.
      PROCESS
How will we facilitate the discussion
or get to a decision remotely?

          4. What preparation is needed? What work can get done
PRE-WORK asynchronously to expedite the meeting?

          5.
Who needs to attend? Narrow the invite list to the
PEOPLE smallest group of the right people. (
