6 UPPER HUTT LEADER, AUGUST 14, 2019 neighbourly.co.nz CONVERSATIONS Examining referendums – do they work? OPINION: Abortion, cannabis reform and euthanasia. Polarising issues which seem to repeatedly defy normal parliamentary decision making. We have elected representatives and publicly open select committee processes, which is meant to allow for thorough investigation of issues and sound decision making. Yet referendums have been demanded on each of these three issues, with abortion law reform the latest to see this call made. Referendums are public votes like elections, but as we all saw with the Brexit vote, they are prone to big money trying to sway opinions, disinformation, and emotion. So what is the best process for our elected lawmakers to use in setting these new laws? Should it be left in their hands and the parliamentary process? Or should it be thrown to the public in a referendum? An MP from each side of the house gives their views. democratic tool we have.
