UNIFORM AND APPEARANCE Ensuring students attend school dressed smartly in school uniform is the foundation for high standards in other aspects of school life, including a positive work ethic and conduct in and around school. The purpose of The Ridgeway School uniform is to ensure that students are smart and appropriately dressed for the school environment. The school uniform gives a sense of unity and students should wear their uniform with pride whether they are in or outside the school building. First impressions count and by continually reinforcing our high standards of uniform and appearance we aim to prepare our students for the world of work. We thank parents in advance for actively supporting our school uniform expectations. Uniform is worn as a sign of commitment to The Ridgeway School and its ethos. We have high expectations of appearance and, therefore, we expect parents and students to co-operate with us to promote the highest standards of appearance, manners and behaviour. Purchasing uniform and ensuring a child arrives to school dressed appropriately, can be a stressful time. Our Uniform Guide is designed to help with this process by outlining a clear and concise uniform list which, in turn, will help you to understand what is expected of your child when the term begins in September. Any student arriving to school without the correct uniform or equipment will be required to report to new Uniform Office that will be available between 8:15am – 8:50am to resolve the infringement and prepare them for the school day. The loaning of items will be recorded and parents will be informed, students will be expected to return the item the following day or as agreed with the Pastoral team. The aim of the Uniform Office is to support students in the one off occasions where they have unintentionally forgotten, or have lost an item of school uniform/equipment and this has been unable to be replaced. Any loans from the Uniform Office will not be given with a consequence as it is felt that students have taken the right steps to ensure they are ready for the school day. We hope the uniform guide provides clarity around our expectations for September. In the new academic year, students should expect to be challenged by staff where they fail to meet the uniform expectations and will be unable to go to lessons until these have been resolved. Also, the school reserves the right to confiscate items that do not conform to the school’s expectations with regard to uniform. These items will be stored safely and returned to the individual at an appropriate time by a designated member of staff.

UNACCEPTABLE FOOTWEAR The school expects students to wear ‘formal’ leather shoes as part of the uniform. This can cause some confusion since the term can be subjective. However, to avoid any confusion or embarrassment we have included a number of examples which are not appropriate for school. There will be sanctions in place for students who wear unacceptable footwear. This could include being asked to wear a pair of shoes provided by the school until the matter is resolved. Therefore, please help support us by ensuring your child attends the school wearing acceptable shoes. PE Kits- boys & girls Items marked in the PE section with an * are optional and available from the PE Office. Sky blue polo shirt with school logo (available from Famous Branches) Plain black shorts. Short, tight-fitting shorts and ‘hot pant’ style shorts are not appropriate to be worn around the school site and so we ask that students wear plain black tracksuit bottoms on top of their shorts and remove these for PE. Sky blue rugby shirt/hockey shirt with black collar and reversible contrast band in black (available from Famous Branches) Two pairs of sky blue with navy ‘turnover top’ long socks (available from Famous branches) Black plain tracksuit bottoms, these should not be any other colour and should not be emboldened with a logo. We strongly recommend a cross trainer type of trainer.
Consequences for Failure to Meet Uniform Expectations If a student is not wearing the correct school uniform when arriving to school the following will happen: 1. The member of staff on duty before school and the mentor who is the first point of contact in the school day, will ensure that all students are wearing appropriate uniform. Where this is not the case, students will need to attend the uniform office where they will borrow items to ensure that they are meeting the uniform policy. The loaning of items will be recorded and parents informed. The student will not be able to enter lessons until the correct school uniform attire is worn and will therefore be isolated whilst this is being addressed; 2. Students who do not adhere to the uniform policy, and have not reported to the uniform office, will be issued with a C2. They will be required to attend a C2 detention at break time the following day. Parents will be notified via email and on Go4Schools; 3. Failure to attend the C2 detention will result in a Pastoral After School Detention; 4. Extremes of hairstyle, etc. are also not permitted and should be referred in the first instance to the Student Support Leaders, if it is deemed that this does not meet the uniform policy students will not be permitted to attend lessons. If a student has a medical requirement which impacts on the wearing of any part of the school uniform, medical evidence must be provided clearly stipulating the uniform adjustments required and the date that this will cease. In these circumstances the student will be given a medical card. We appreciate the excellent support that we receive from our parents and carers and ask that you contact the school through the student’s mentor if you have any questions or concerns
