Financing University – an Islamic view Are student loans impermissible? • A scholar would have to substantially prove the presence of Riba, which is interest (usury) from an Islamic perspective. • Although the UK Student Loan system uses ‘interest, it is different to Riba according to Shariah. • What makes it different? The debt under Riba based loans would be expected to be repaid regardless of individual circumstances (e.g. income), with the debt remaining until it is paid in full. Under Student Finance England, Students only begin paying off their loan when their earnings reach a set monthly threshold, with repayments being set at 9% of a person’s income, and interest added to the loan by the UK Government. Should we take out a student loan through the UK government? • The decision is yours to make, and you can consult an independent Islamic scholar for their advice. • Approximately 90% of JCC students apply to UCAS and the majority of students apply to Student Finance England to support their studies. • The UK student loan is income-based and performance-linked, which makes it consistent with the principles of Sharia. • The objective of the Student Finance England loan is to ensure that the student is able to afford University-level study, become a graduate and secure a good job that can support themselves and their families. • The loan system also ensures that nobody else is responsible for the debt, the loan is only paid after a certain income threshold is met, and the loan is cancelled after a set amount of years. The majority of our students progress onto university-level study every year, and most use the UK Student Loan system to fund their studies in a manageable way. The tuition loan ensures that families are not burdened with high course fees and the maintenance loan allows students to fund their living expenses with money that they will eventually pay back once they are earning a strong salary.
