SOCAL DECA CDC – IMPORTANT CONFERENCE REMINDERS & INFORMATION Virtual Conference The 2021 SoCal DECA District Career Development Conference will be a virtual event. There will be no onsite/in person component to this year’s conference. Chapter Registration Chapter registrations may only be submitted by the DECA Chapter Advisor. Students should not submit chapter registrations. Any registration inquiries need to come from the DECA Chapter Advisor and the California DECA State Management Team will only correspond with DECA Chapter Advisors regarding registration questions, confirmations, and requests for registration assistance. Opening Session All Districts will participate in a grand/combined opening session where we will hear from our State Leaders and a talented Keynote Speaker. More details and a bio on the Keynote Speaker will be shared with chapters. Competition by District While the opening session and leadership components will be combined across Districts, competitors from each District will only compete against competitors from their respective District. As stated later in this document there will be a separate awards session for each District. Leadership Content In addition to competitive events, attendees will have the opportunity to be a part of fun, interactive and engaging learning experiences through workshops and presentations provided online. More details and instructions for accessing these resources will be shared with chapters. Judge Feedback Sessions Once competition concludes students will have the opportunity to participate in virtual judge roundtable sessions where judges will share key tips and pointers on what sets apart the top competitors to assist students as they prepare for the next level of competition. Testing Competitors who need to take tests as part of their competitive event will do so online. Students can confirm whether their chosen event has a testing component by reviewing the DECA Competitive Events Poster: https://www.deca.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/2020- 21_CE_Poster.pdf California DECA SoCal CDC 2021 Page 4 of 7
Tests will be 100 questions with answer choices A-D and only one right answer per question in line with DECA’s standard testing format. Tests will be delivered online. One question at a time will be presented on screen and test questions will be delivered in a randomized order (i.e. each student in a given test will have the same 100 questions, but they will appear on screen in a randomized order one question at a time). There will be a time limit of 60 minutes for the test. For this year only tests will be open book, but students must take the test on their own. Taking the test with another individual, talking with another individual on the phone, or communicating with another individual in any way during the test is considered a violation of the Code of Conduct and will result in disqualification. Presentations Series Event Role Plays & Case Studies will be prerecorded and uploaded for online judging. Detailed guidelines and instructions will be provided to competitors through their advisors. This is a 100% virtual event. Competitors shall not meet in person to record their video submission if they are competing on a team. Detailed instructions will be provided for competitors to use virtual tools to join with their team virtually to record their video submission in a virtual meeting room. The recording shall be done in one take and may not be an edited compilation of multiple takes. In other words, once the team is in the virtual room together, they must start their recording, run it continuously, and then end the recording all in one take. The focus is not on digital video production or editing. The judges will be focused on the content of the presentation and the ideas presented. Series Events For Series Events (Principles of Business Administration, Individual Series, and Team Decision Making Events) there must be a minimum of 8 competitors/teams in each event across all chapters participating in that event. If the minimum number of competitors/teams do not register for an event an email will be sent to advisors letting them know which events are being dropped and providing instructions for advisors to sign their students up for another event. Written Events There will be no written event competitions offered for the SoCal District Conference. Vice President of Southern California Election All District Vice Presidents (Vice President of Northern California, Vice President of Silicon Valley, and Vice President of Southern California) will be elected during their respective District Career Development Conferences. Students who plan to run for the position of Vice President of Southern California need to carefully review the State Officer Candidate Documents located on the California DECA website for complete election details and process. http://californiadeca.org/officers/index.php California DECA SoCal CDC 2021 Page 5 of 7
Scoring Concerns/Grievances: All concerns/grievances regarding scoring or competitive events MUST be submitted no later than 7:00 p.m. on the date that is two days after the close of the Awards Session. For example; if the awards session is on Sunday then grievances MUST be submitted by 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Concerns/grievances should be addressed to the State Director in writing via the Grievance Reporting Form provided in the Conference Policies & Procedures packet. After the grievance reporting deadline outlined in the previous bullet all competitive event outcomes and scores become final and concerns/grievances will not be considered. Awards Each District will have their own awards session. We will hold a virtual awards session where we will recognize the outstanding achievements of our competitors in the component parts of events (e.g. tests, role plays, case studies, presentations) and our overall winners in events as we have done in the past. Physical awards will be shipped to the local chapter after the awards session for distribution to their chapter’s award recipients. California DECA SoCal CDC 2021 Page 6 of 7
