G R OU P P U B L I SHE R’ S L E T T E R _ STA RT ING F R E SH 2020 was a rough year. From politics to the pandemic, we are all looking to put the past behind us and focus our sights on a bigger and better year ahead. Out with the old and in with the new. And while I’ll be bringing with me the sense of gratitude I’ve gained over the past year, I’m approaching 2021 with as much optimism as I can muster. GOOD. CLEAN. FUN. For one, I’m optimistic about the growth of our region and state, despite the economic challenges the past year presented. Florida continues to lead the country in state-to- state migration, with most new residents coming from New York, Georgia and Texas. We’ve got the weather, no state income tax, a strong sports culture, great food, affordable housing — the list goes on. With the rise in remote working, it’s easy to see why Tampa and Florida as a whole is such a draw for new residents. This year, our team at Tampa Magazines plans to keep innovating and challenging A SAFE BET magazine standards. As part of our continual renewal process, we’re working to create You bring the luck, while we handle making sure everything is Safe + Sound. Enhanced a magazine that better meets your needs. We’ve increased our circulation to 60,000 protocols are in place, plus more space for you to win. Come play and dine with copies each issue and now have magazines covering the entire city of Tampa. LOCAL KNOWLEDGE S P EEDY, S AF E TM S ABOUT ME_ BB ART IS A LIFESTYLE BRAND THAT CREATES ART WITH A PURPOSE. Everything I do for the brand — from my merch shop, to my afterschool art program for students, to the murals and mixed media I S H ER E paintings — is all created with a bigger picture in mind. Creativity is something that naturally runs through me, and I’m constantly focusing on the brand. I am business-minded at my core, so every time I see an opportunity to turn art into something [bigger], I take it, try to scale it, and run with it. MY LOCAL KNOWLEDGE_ THERE ARE SO MANY GREAT BRUNCH PLACES THAT HAVE RECENTLY OPENED IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD. Psomi, a really cute, family-owned Greek spot, opened around the corner. Everything from the decor to the menus and the uniforms makes my heart melt. It’s a perfectly executed brand and, as an artist, I love that. ANOTHER PLACE WITHIN A FIVE-MINUTE WALK FROM MY HOUSE: I LOVE RAW SMOOTHIE CO ON NORTH HOWARD FOR A QUICK ACAI BOWL OR SMOOTHIE. I also eat at Lemon Grass Thai Kitchen at least three times a week. They are quick, and my healthy go-to option is Tom Yum soup and fresh rolls. If I’m sharing with my boyfriend, we get the same thing. Just add chicken fried rice, and then split that whole meal. They 01. know me by voice as soon as I call it in. MY FAVORITE TOPIC IS SELF-CARE. If I don’t prioritize it, my work really suffers. I feel my best physically and mentally committing to three days a week at CAMP Tampa, which is a unique fitness boutique located in South BIA NCA Tampa. My go-to classes are yoga and Hot HIIT Pilates! Soho Wellness is where I go for what I like to call my monthly upkeep. It offers both mind and BURROW S body care, so when I need a mental check-in, I go to Debbie, who offers amazing life coach services. Then for relaxation, Botox and aesthetics, the OWNER/FOUNDER, BB ART owner, Becky, hooks me up. She’s one of my best friends, so I’m always popping in there to see what’s new and forcing myself onto their calendar. When I really want to treat myself, I visit Krissy at Cielo Spa for a facial; she works magic and is booked months out, so call now if you want to see her. Homes like this fully restored three-bedroom from 1910 are the epitome of what people love about Tampa Heights, Buchanan says. “It’s just the historic charm. People are starting a new STORY_MCKENNA KELLEY chapter in these 100-year-old homes,” he explains. “Homeowners are always finding old glass kitchen cabinet doors or an attic. They are paying more to have a restored home versus a renovated home because, as we’re spending more time in our living rooms, they want to talk about where this or that piece came from, or about the fireplace or the restored doorknobs. People like to have conversations about the history of their homes.” 02. 313 W. FRANCES 01. Another restored bungalow, from 1903, this three-bedroom, four-bathroom features an addition, like many of the Tampa Heights homes that have been more recently updated. “They usually start off as smaller, two-bed, one-bath bungalows,” Buchanan explains. “Then throughout the years they’ve been expanded either through the back or propped up with a second floor. Then one to two bedrooms have been added on the second floor.” This house features an expansive, landscaped backyard with a wood deck, fire pit and outdoor shower. Plus, being just four blocks Tampa Heights is on the rise again. Just north of downtown, residents are embracing the neighborhood’s history and proximity from Armature Works, it’s all about location. “The proximity to downtown, I think, is the main draw to Tampa’s urban core. “Tampa Heights has changed a lot, and it’s become vibrant,” says Nicholas Buchanan, who focuses on to Tampa Heights,” Buchanan says. “A lot of newer residents that are coming to Tampa Heights the neighborhood as the lead Realtor for Keller Williams’ Buchanan Portfolio Group. TAMPA ST. “What’s happening now is people are coming in and, if the original homes aren’t able to be repaired, they’re being torn down and really cool modern single-families or modern townhouses with rooftop terraces are being put in their place,” Buchanan explains. Built in 2018, this Tampa Street three-bedroom is the perfect example of a new home built in the old Craftsman style. Its size is similar to that of an original Heights bungalow but with updated 21st-century granite counters, maple cabinets, and vaulted, airy ceilings. Buchanan estimates that roughly one-third of the neighborhood is new construction, so properties like this one are increasingly common in the area. 05. 3512 N. HIGHLAND AVE. “Tampa Heights does have a historic designation, so there are guidelines you have to follow,” Buchanan says. “There’s rules about the look of [the home], the look of the windows, the look of the front porch.” But there’s still room to have fun with exterior paint colors, like this 1913 home does. It also features a mix of classic new elements, like the front porch, wide foyer and cozy fireplace, paired with updated granite countertops and walk-in showers. 04. 03. 03. 109 E. WOODLAWN AVE. 05. Another one of the biggest draws to Tampa Heights is homes like this restored 1924 Japanese-style bungalow, which has all the defining features of the neighborhood’s classic properties. “You’re going to have gorgeous wood floors. A lot of people have restored the floors to their original beauty,” Buchanan says. “You’re usually going to have one or two fireplaces. Some are wood burning, and some have been converted to gas. You’ll hopefully have all your original built-ins in the dining room with glass doors, baseboards and really ornate crown moulding on the ceilings. Then the front porches, or the wraparound porches, I think are what really define the Tampa Heights houses.” 36 home+garden february ta m pa m ag a z i n e s .c o m 37
