In the first home game since the tragic passing of Tyler Skaggs, the Angels on July 12 combined to no-hit the Seattle Mariners in a ONE ON ONE WITH TYLER SKAGGS 13-0 win. Taylor Cole served as opener and tossed two scoreless innings. Félix Peña (in relief) matched a career-high with seven innings pitched. It was the 11th official no-hitter in Angels history and first since May 2, 2012 versus Minnesota (by Jered Weaver). It also was the second official combined no-hitter in Angels history (Mark Langston/Mike Witt) in 1990 — also against Seattle. 6 3-12 In Memory.indd 6 7/25/19 4:00 PM

Q-AND-A WITH JUSTIN UPTON Q: Why the Seminoles and the Steelers? A: I used to go to Florida State baseball camps. When I was a kid we would drive down to Tallahassee and I would go to baseball camp there. And the Steelers, my dad was a die-hard Steeler fan. We watched the Steelers when we were growing up. We used to go to Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh and watch games. I try to go once a year. So I have just always been a Florida State Seminoles and Pittsburgh Steelers fan. Q: How big a fan of baseball are you? A: I love the game. I have been watching it since I was a kid. If there’s a day game on, I’ll usually pop it on and watch it on TV and try to keep up with it as best I can. But obviously you are at the stadium most of the day. It’s tough to keep up with all of it. Q: You played other sports. What drew you to baseball? A: Baseball and football are a close one-and-two for me. I love the contact in football and playing on Friday nights. But for me, baseball was always my love, just because there are so many different facets of the game where you can always impact the game, even if you’re not swinging the bat well. Q: In what other ways can you impact the game? A: I mean, you can make a great play on defense, you can make a great play base running, you can make a great throw. There are so many different things you can do to be able to just drop something things and play the game within the game throughout the season in the bucket. is I think what good hitters take pride in. So I think more than anything you’re going to perform the way you’re going to perform because of the talent you’ve been given but being able to have those conversations to make you better can help you. Q: So, at this point, it’s a combination of ability and experience? A: Yes, the biggest example for me is my first time playing in the American League, I had to ask around. I had to dive in and ask questions on different pitchers and different hitters learn how to approach them and approach the league in general. I had to ask around because I haven’t been in this league before so those are little things that you need to know, when you haven’t faced a guy. THE RETURN The wait for Albert Pujols to return to St. Louis is no more. After signing with the Angels as a free agent following the 2011 season, Pujols and the Angels finally made their way to The Gateway City, and the sight of the future Hall of Famer back in the region which initially welcomed him as a 21-year old was nothing short than magical. PUJOLS AND THE CARDINALS: After being selected by St. Louis in the 13th round of the 1999 First-Year Player Draft, Pujols made his Major League debut with the Cardinals in 2001. Following are a few of his accomplishments during his 11 seasons with the Cardinals: • Batted .328 (2073/6312) with 455 doubles, 445 home runs and 1,329 RBI in 1705 games • 2001 National League Rookie of the Year • Three-time National League MVP (2005, 2008, 2009) • Selected to nine All-Star Games • Won six Silver Slugger Awards and two Gold Gloves • 2006 and 2011 World Series Champion • Ranks in the top three in Cardinals history in: OPS (1st; 1.037), slugging (1st; .617), doubles (2nd; 455), home runs (2nd; 445), RBI (2nd; 1329), total bases (2nd; 3893), extra-base hits (2nd; 915), OBP (2nd; .420), and runs (3rd; 1291). • Still ranks as all-time leader (min. 500 PA) at the current Busch Stadium in home runs (110), batting average (.333), OBP (.436), slugging (.612), OPS (1.048) and extra-base hits (233). 43 43 The Return.indd 43 7/25/19 4:40 PM
THE CYCLE Shohei Ohtani became just the seventh different player in Angels history to hit for the cycle when he registered a single, double, triple and home run in Tampa in mid-June. He also became the first Japanese-born player to accomplish the feat. “I’m simply very happy that I was able to accomplish this. There have been so many other great Japanese players that have come before me. Being the first one to accomplish it, I’m really happy and it’s going to lead to a lot of confidence down the road.” Ohtani joined Mike Trout (5/21/13 vs. SEA), Chone Figgins (9/16/06 at TEX), Jeff DaVanon (8/25/04 vs. KC), Dave Winfield (6/24/91 at KC), Dan Ford (8/10/79 vs. SEA) and Jim Fregosi who registered two cycles as an Angel (5/20/68 vs. BOS and 7/28/64 vs. NYY). Ohtani is congratulated by teammates after his three-run home run in the first inning. Ohtani follows through on his single in the seventh inning. Ohtani slides in safely with a double in the third inning. Ohtani reaches third base with a stand-up triple in the fifth inning. 45 45 The Cycle.indd 45 7/25/19 4:42 PM

IT’S 3 A.M. AND I MUST BE AN ALL-STAR BY PETE DONOVAN In Chicago, he was a utility infielder and pinch hitter deluxe. In Anaheim, he is a slugging All-Star. The metamorphosis of Tommy La Stella seems more than improbable. But not really. Tommy La Stella could always hit. He just needed opportunity. Joe Maddon, the veteran Chicago Cubs manager, had this to say In the minors, he hit over .300 three times and over .290 another about one of his players: “He can wake up at 3 a.m. and hit anyone.” four times. I don’t fault them for making that choice one bit. They’re doing what’s in the best interest of the team. I understand that 100 percent.” The biggest surprise in 2019 has been, of course, the power. He’s hit two homers in a game three times already (April 8, April 21 and May 9). Those six are one more than his career high of five in 2017. Through the end of June, he had hit 16 homers, driven in 44 runs and was hitting over .300 (.304). “The numbers he’s put up kind of came out of nowhere,” Angels manager Brad Ausmus said. “I don’t want to say Tommy’s an underdog, but he’s not someone I would have picked to be an All-Star this season. I’m happy for him. I hope he really enjoys it.” Angels hitting coaches helped La Stella alter his swing path during spring training.
