Queensland Jaguar Driver January - February 2016 Bi-Monthly Magazine of the Jaguar Drivers’ Club of Queensland We have been having a mechanical time, getting the Contents red XJS ready for competition in 2016. The gearbox was known to be leaking when we bought the car, through JDCQ Club Calendar for January / February / March 4 the speedo drive fitting. The previous owner told us how the fitting had come away during a race and the JDCQ Australia Day - Cormorant Bay 5 gear oil had leaked out. They put the fitting back in Jaguar Life with President Tony Herald 6 and carried on, but it still leaked quite a lot. We planned to remove the gearbox, it detaches from the National Rally 2016 Caloundra 7 engine with the bell housing. This means removing the JDCQ Award Winners 2015 8 starter motor, held to the bell housing by 2 bolts. I just happened to read an article in a Jaguar magazine that I Historian’s Message and Sporting Calendar 2016 10 borrowed from the JDCQ library, about removing the New JDCQ Committee, & Membership News 11 starter from an XJS. 1 bolt is immediately easy to see and get at under the car. Fit a socket and out it comes. Gold Coast Register report 12 The other bolt, above the starter is hidden, completely Wide Bay & Burnett Register report 13 invisible, can only be felt for. The magazine article told Library full catologue of books & DVDs 14-19 me that this hidden bolt might not be the same size as the bottom bolt and might even be the only metre Darling Downs Show & Shine Xmas Lunch 20 bolt on the car. Some XJS have need of 11mm socket Sunshine Coast trip to the XJC muster 21 for this one bolt whereas the bottom was nearly always a 9/16 socket. What a querk! Only Jaguar (Leyland) The Jaguar XJC story 22 could have done this, I bet there’s been some angst and XJC Muster report 24 choice words over that one. We removed the gearbox from the XJS and dismantled Mark II Burblings with Robin Todd 26 the speedo drive. What we found was that, the previous Monocoque Register 2016 plans & Xmas Lunch 27 owners in their haste to get back in the race, they had not pushed the speedo drive fitting into the gearbox Jaguar Crossword Puzzle 28 enough. It might have felt OK as the locking bolt went Website Log-on, Peaks Crossing & Prestige workshop 29 into a groove to stop the drive falling out again but it Nuts & Bolts with Bill McMonagle 30 was the wrong groove. We found that the locking bolt had be forced into the O ring groove, destroying the Tales of the Yellow E-Type 32 ring and damaging the groove too much for it to take The Hill, report from Noosa hillclimb 35 another O ring. But, we have no need for a speedo in a car that doesn’t go on the highway, so we made up a Unveiling the Jaguar Bond cars 36 brass plug with an O ring groove and a dimple recess Trade Adverts 37 for the lock bolt. Job done. Whilst we had the gearbox Classified Advertisements 38 on the bench, we completely dismantled it to see all the roller bearings, ball races, gears and synchro hubs etc. JDCQ Committees and Officials 40 Fitted new bearings and oil seals, otherwise all OK. Model Registers & Contacts 41 We did, however, have a seized rear brake calliper. We couldn’t push 1 piston back into the housing even with Membership Application Form 42 a lever bar. Then, after removing the rear suspension assembly complete and taking off the calliper, we tried using a G clamp across 2 blocks of wood, still no movement. We tried a bigger clamp, nothing. We put it into the vice and wound that up, got a bar and wound some more. Then there was a bang and the top of the vice whizzed off across the shed. When those rear brake callipers seize, they are really jammed! Patron Bill Pitt Queenslander. Touring car champion in 1961. Jaguar Life President Tony Herald By the time you read this the JDCQ AGM will finally have been held, reports accepted and elections for committee positions completed. Unfortunately, due to a lack of attendees the original AGM, set for 24th November had to be abandoned and an alternative date set, the 14th December. The AGM has been difficult to conduct for the last few years with low attendance meaning the constitutionally defined quorum is difficult to attain. This year that has been exacerbated by the fact that members are used to attending Brisbane Register meetings but not the JDCQ meetings. In fact there is only one JDCQ meeting a year nowadays, and that is the AGM. The situation we faced this year is likely to be repeated so the committee will need to find an alternative to expecting members to attend a night time meeting. A number of changes are being considered for our constitution, to take account of the role technology can play nowadays, perhaps the answer lies in a further change for conducting AGM’s in a different way. We shall see and you will be consulted on any proposals before changes are put to a vote of our members. Despite this it is pleasing to say that, not only have the entire JDCQ committee elected to continue on for another year, but we also have two new committee members, from Gympie, who will look after regalia and our Facebook presence. I am particularly pleased that we now have a Regalia Officer after several years without one because I believe through regalia we create a common identity for club members. Whilst the details haven’t been worked through yet the acquisition and sale of regalia will be carried out quite differently to the past methods. The club will no longer carry stocks of product, which often had meant left over items which couldn’t be sold, however arrangements will be put in place to provide club branded items economically and promptly – watch this space. Elsewhere in this magazine you will find a full list of the new committee and AGM reports. On a personal note, I elected to continue on in my role as President to see the National Rally through to a successful conclusion and to continue to introduce subtle improvements in the way the club operates. Not forgotten is our goal of monthly magazines, we aren’t there yet but we want to be before 2016 is out. Our next event is the Australia Day picnic, again at the very scenic location of Cormorant Bay Park on Wivenhoe Dam. It is a lovely spot and we have an area reserved for us with ample facilities, free electric barbeques, large and small shelters and plenty of nearby parking. This year we will have some free drinks and other fare left over from the AGM sausage sizzle. So no excuses, see you there on 26th January. The other biggy on our calendar is the Jaguar National Rally 2016 at Caloundra. The rally committee have been hard at work all year planning this event and the next few months will be putting the finishing touches to what will be a memorable national rally. Registrations are well and truly open and we have a considerable number already booked in. Make sure you don’t leave it too long to register, just jump onto the rally website www.jaguarnationalrally2016.org.au and you can do it all on line. That’s all from me this time. I trust you and your families had a fabulous Christmas and will have a wonderful 2016. Take care and stay safe Tony Herald Queensland Jaguar Driver January - February 2016 Web Edition

JDCQ 2015 Award Winners Each year a number of awards are presented at end of year functions to members who have excelled at their participation or contribution to JDCQ events and management. The awards are handed out at Christmas functions and this year award winners came from three different registers so were presented at several Christmas functions. Once again this article has been compiled to directly recognise those achievers and to let all club members know who in the club is participating and contributing to keeping the JDCQ spirit alive. Club Member of the Year for 2015 Awarded to our club President, Tony Herald (Bris). This award is based on points gained via the JDCQ point score system for attendance at and organising of events, service on committee and contribution to the JDCQ magazine, Queensland Jaguar Driver. Tony was presented with his award by 2015 Brisbane Register Chair, Allan Hilless at the Brisbane Xmas Party. Female Club Member of the Year. For 2015 was awarded to Gold Coast member Di Cooper. This award is similarly calculated and is the Danielle Herald Memorial Tony Herald receiving the Club Member of Award. Di is an active club the Year award from Allan Hilless member both attending and (with hubby Terry) an organiser of many outings for the Gold Coast Register. Di was awarded the trophy by Tony Herald at the Gold Coast Register Xmas Extravaganza. Di Cooper receiving the Danielle Herald Memorial Award for Female Club Champion for 2015 Club Member of the Year Once again Max Parnell. During 2015 Max, from the Sunshine Coast, has consistently and successfully campaigned his racing Mk1 Jaguar in competitive events throughout Queensland and New South Wales. Max has won this award on four previous occasions. Max was unable to attend a Christmas function last year so was awarded the trophy, with accompanying plaques, for 2014 and 2015, at the Sunshine Coast Register Xmas Lunch. Max Parnell receiving the Club Champion Trophy from President Tony Herald New member of the Year Each year we also look at those members who have joined the club during the year. All are eligible for the Fred Donges Encouragement Award which recognises the new member who has had the greatest participation for the year. This year the award was presented to Richard and Caroline Mercer from the Gold Coast Register. A delighted Richard and Richard and Caroline Mercer with Caroline were presented with their award by Tony their New Member of the Year Herald at the Gold Coast Xmas Extravaganza. award Badge of Merit This year the Badge of Merit was awarded to three significant and long term contributors. Badge of Merit Gold Coast register members Terry and Di Cooper were awarded their Badges of Merit by outgoing Gold Coast Chair Ray Howlett. Terry and Di have for several years served on committee and organised many monthly outings, mainly mid week, for the Gold Coast register. They are a very popular couple who have contributed much to the Gold Coast members. Terry and Di Cooper receiving their BOM from Ray Howlett Model Register of the Year Each year a trophy is awarded to the secretary of the Model Register which has been most active throughout the year. The 2015award was again presented to Clive Arnold for the E Type Register. Clive and Tony Nelson have organised very successful driving runs and lunches throughout the year. Clive received the trophy from President Tony Clive Arnold receives the Register of the Herald at the Brisbane Christmas Function. Year Award for the E & F Type Register Congratulations to all of the deserving winners and a big thank you from all JDCQ members for your contribution throughout 2015. A Note on the Trophies: The JDCQ has two trophy cabinets housed in the showroom of Col Galley’s Kirkfare Classics. All of the perpetual trophies are now on display in those cabinets so that all can see them whenever they visit the showroom. The individual award winners were all given a plaque indicating that they had won their award in 2015. The perpetual trophies contain much of the club’s history and this is now being safely preserved in our own secure cabinets. We thank Col for providing a home for this important club memorabilia. First of the 40 Year Memberships On a final note: 2015 marked the 40th anniversary of the formation of the JDCQ. While membership anniversary badges are traditionally handed out by register chairs at the Xmas functions, this year was the first year that the 40 year membership badge could be awarded and just two members were eligible to receive the inaugural 40 year badges. Founding member Margaret Rowse was presented with her 40 year badge by President Tony Herald at her home in Esk, just prior to 40 year member Perry Murray was presented with his 40 year the Darling Downs Show and Shine. badge by Tony at the Darling Downs Show and Shine Xmas Lunch party. Congratulations to both Margaret and Perry for achieving this very significant milestone in the club. Queensland Jaguar Driver January - February 2016 Web Edition

MONTHLY MEETINGS Gold Coast Register HELD AT ASHMORE TAVERN, ASHMORE The October meeting was opened at 7.00pm by the Chairman, Ray Howlett, who warmly welcomed all members, and especially welcomed back (after a long residence overseas) Roger and Margaret Gibson. Our resident Tour Guide, David Willmott, (again with prompting) described our month’s events as follows: A lovely mid-week run to Windaroo Tavern, via Lower Beechmont for morning tea. The lunch was superb in the newly decorated, air-conditioned Tavern, and what made it extra special was the Senior’s Discount! A spectacular day was held at David and Robyn Hughes’ magnificent property in Tuckombil, with the beautiful scenery enjoyed by all members who attended, some of whom came from other Registers, to socialise and show off their beautiful Jaguars! After a character-building but beautiful drive organised by the Kup-Ferroths, most of us showed up (in one piece) to see the F-Type and the XK150 (proudly shown by Roger and Margaret Gibson) winning top prizes. Fantastic hospitality by the Hughes’ and a wonderful array of food (quite unusual for Jag Club events!) made the whole day a brilliant event, and sincere thanks must go to David and Robyn for allowing us into their home, Robin and Junita for the fabulous run, and of course the Coopers for their mid-week extravaganza! Wide Bay Burnett Register With Bill Buckley & Rhonda Thrush Photos by Paul Mittelheuser G,day Our November meeting was held in the Grand Hotel at Biggenden. We began the day in the park in Childers where we had smoko. Then a nice run to Biggenden for a lunchtime meeting. After lunch we moved on to Peter Huth’s Citroen collection at Gayndah where we spent a couple of hours looking at his collection. These cars were way ahead of their time with some of the features only recently being added to modern cars. Anyone planning to go to the national rally with a caravan or tent is welcome to setup in Peters back yard which has the facilities and is a pleasant spot. We have had a barbeque there. After leaving Peter we struck the mother of all storms which was over us all the way back to Maryborough. The wipers couldn’t cope and it was impossible to see, the road was flooded in many places, I honestly have never seen rain like it and travelling speed was only about 60kph or less, nearer to Maryborough you could raise it to 70. Like Paul says, we are getting too bloody old for this type of driving. Those going to Gladstone will be meeting up in the pie shop in Gin Gin for lunch on the Saturday and arriving in Gladstone in mid afternoon. Sunday morning breakfast is planned at a pub in Gladstone and then the run home. This is Paul Mittlehauser’s story. Paul had a terrible trip home from Gayndah with torrential rain for over an hour, couldn’t see the road so followed the centre line, when visible. The XK is so low, it ploughed through the water just like a boat with water pouring up over the car. Most of the trip was travelled at 50kph, horrible. Paul spent most of the next day with the XK on ramps taking the front undershield off to get the debris out, even a couple of small stones were in there. There was also a branch embedded in the spoiler section. Luckily, no damage. Plans for 2016 February there is a plan to go to the lavender shop in Bundy which will please the girls and then on to the Bundy RSL for lunch. Rhonda will advise details at a later date. The planned run to see the Bowden collection will need to be postponed indefinitely as we alone cannot make up the numbers required. We need time to try and get members from other registers to join with us to make up the numbers. Regards Bill Queensland Jaguar Driver January - February 2016 Web Edition 13

Sunshine Coast Trip to the Jaguar XJC Muster With Ian & Vicky McKinney The Jaguar XJC Muster celebrating 40 years 1975-2015 was held at Echuca, Victoria, on the banks of the Murray River from the 16-18 October. Two XJC’s from Queensland, one belonging to Arthur Robinson (accompanied by Merv Jackson co driver) and the other by Ian McKinney, took to the road on Tuesday the 13th October to make the 1600 klms journey to Echuca. Two other XJC owners, Rod Salter from Bowen, who chose to drive his current model XK150 to the rally, and Paul Creighton from the Gold Coast was unable to attend due to family commitments. Both cars performed well cruising down the Newell Highway as you would expect and we saw kilometres of grain crops on both sides of the highway, all ready for harvest. You meet some interesting and colourful characters travellers at West Wylong, such as 7 mature Harley Davidson riders staying in the unit beside us. They admired our cars as we did with the chrome plated bikes. Next morning everyone was out cleaning and packing either cars or bikes, and sharing trip notes. One of the Harley guys asked the question of his mates “what will we do with the 6 pack of Tooheys” one of them suggested they give them to the old guys next door. We finally arrive at the Mercure Port of Echuca Hotel, our accommodation for the next 3 days, but not before cleaning insects from the fronts of our cars to look good when we arrived, and we did. The rectangular car park inside the surrounds of the Mecure was packed with several XJC’s more than I had ever seen in one place and this was only Friday morning. The organisers had a full program planned with a meet and greet of other owners over a few savouries and drinks on Friday night. Saturday there were choices of a trip to the Holden Museum, a Murray River Cruise, visit the Great Aussie beer shed or just wander the historic Echuca port. In the evening it was the XJC 40th Anniversary Dinner with our guest speaker Bill Hemming. Bill was at the launch of the XJC in Mildura 40 years ago, so he shared his memories with us of that special occasion. Over the many years since the release Bill has owned and enjoyed a collection of 9 Jaguars XK150, E Type, Mk4, 2xMkV DHCs, Mk 11, Mk 9, XJC, XJ40. He raced the XK150 in historic racing from 1988 to 2009 along with various Elfins from 1996 to present but is now down to one Jaguar, a modified Mk1 saloon. It was then the big Jaguar XJC and Daimler Coupe Display Day, which was held at the Aquatic Reserve Echuca, but not before there was a cavalcade of Jaguar XJCs. We formed into a procession through the main streets of Echuca before parking in Aquatic Reserve. There was a total of 34 XJCs made up of 23 of 4.2L and 11of 5.3L. Arthur Robinson’s car took pride of place in the centre of the display with an XJS on either side. We then tackled the drive home after a great weekend meeting new owners and enjoying their company, and their cars. Well done to the organisers, very few of us will ever see this many XJCs in one place. Queensland Jaguar Driver January - February 2016 Web Edition 21

Andrew and Michelle flew their Yak aerobatic plane to Echuca on the morning of the Sunday display day and made a couple of low level passes over us with a smoke trail billowing out the back! Many owners and their coupes checked into The Mercure on the Friday and the carpark looked a great sight, with nearly 30 coupes being cleaned after their trips, and being inspected by all and sundry. It looked magnificent and a very nice addition to the evening’s atmosphere. Again, 80 people enjoyed a plentiful buffet dinner, and the evening ran smoothly with the assistance of a local identity, Ross Veale who was our MC. Ross is another example of a helpful local who would not take any payment for his time, but in return he asked that we might donate some money to Echuca Regional Health for their new hospital.
