PRAYER OF THE MONTH Come, Holy Spirit of Pentecost. Come, Holy Spirit of the great South Land. O God, bless and unite all your people in Australia and guide us on the pilgrim way of the Plenary Council. Give us the grace to see your face in one another and to recognise Jesus, our companion on the road. Give us the courage to tell our stories and to speak boldly of your truth. Give us ears to listen humbly to each other and a discerning heart to hear what you are saying. Lead your Church into a hope-filled future, that we may live the joy of the Gospel. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, bread for the journey from age to age. Amen.

COMING EVENTS SATURDAY 11th SEPTEMBER ENOGGERA CREEK (SCRUB Rd To SOURCE) DAYWALK
September 2021 Jilalan Brisbane Catholic Bushwalking Club Page 5 Leader: Iain Renton Ph: 3870 8082 or 0401 429 085 Meet at: St Brigid’s car park, Red Hill Time: 6.30am Cost: $5 Grade: S56 Distance: 9km Height: Max: 519m; Min: 217m; Gain: 358m; Loss: 222m Location: The Mt Nebo/Jolley’s Lookout area of the D’Aguilar Range Web: https://www.openstreetmap.org/search?query=scrub%20rd%20nebo#map=16/- 27.4201/152.8250 Emerg Off: Kerry Mulligan Ph: 0421 022 250 The Club has already walked along much of the length of Enoggera Creek. I will be taking you right to its source (or at least the source of one of several streams that come together at the creek’s beginning). We will start the walk at the junction of Mt Nebo Rd and Scrub Rd after doing a car shuffle. Scrub Road is a fire trail that runs from Mt Nebo Rd to South Boundary Rd (another fire trail). The party will take Scrub Rd down to Enoggera Creek which we will then walk upstream until it is no longer there. It is dramatic country with the creek bending at twisting around interlocking spurs. In some places the sides of the valley are steep and everything is dark and mysterious; in other places it is gentler and more open. At one spot the creek has carved a long deep slit in the rock where it plunges down several vertical rock faces. Here we will clamber up a steep side slope and contour around this chasm. When I did this on a pre-outing last year, there was some scunge and lantana but it wasn’t too bad. With the wet autumn and winter, we’ve had since then, the undergrowth may be thicker. I will be doing another pre-outing to check it out. Further upstream we walk through extensive groves of palm forest. At the end there will be a short climb up to South Boundary Rd which runs along the ridgeline. We should reach this road near where the Boombana Circuit walking track crosses it. Then it is a short walk to the cars at Jolly’s Lookout. There will be a lot of rock hopping and clambering over boulders on this walk, so fitness and agility are required. The walk is just under 10km long. There will also be some rock scrambling. Join me for some really beautiful creek walking in an area the Club hasn’t walked a lot. Iain. MONDAY 13th SEPTEMBER BINNA BURRA LODGE OPENING Contact: Binna Burra Ph: Ph: 5533 3622 Meet at: Binna Burra, 1069 Binna Burra Rd, Beechmont (At the end of the road.) Time: 10:30am to Noon. About Australian Reading Hour Originally launched by Australian libraries and library associations for the National Year of Reading in 2012, the Australian Reading Hour began as an event for all Australians to set aside one hour on one day to read – whatever they wanted, wherever they were located, and however they chose to read. It has since become an annual program featuring events with Australian authors, writers, poets and illustrators in libraries, schools, bookshops, and even in shopping centres, and on public transport. The main part was once where the cement factory conveyor ran taking the coral from the wharf to the works – out of bounds till the conveyor was demolished. You will start at the Station, cross the road to the Creek and follow the bikeways all the way to Seventeen Mile Rocks Road. In fact, the creek actually begins at Ipswich Rd, however up there it is all underground and now in people’s backyards. Once at Jindalee, we will try to investigate Oldfield Park, which looks overgrown. The alternative is to follow the roads around this piece of bush, over the highway and onto the River at The Bridge. Join me on this magical mystery tour of investigation and wonder. FRIDAY 17th SEPTEMBER BITTER SUITE BAR JOHN TOOHEY SOCIETY Leader: Karen Franklin Ph: 0417 718 591. Address: 75 Welsby Street, New Farm, cnr Lamington. Time: From 4pm till 9ish. What For: A chat, a meal and a social drink. Web: http://bittersuite.com.au/ Emerg Off: Greg Ph: 0418 122 995 At the start of Spring in Brisbane, there is no better place to be than outdoor near the River to experience the lovely weather, fresh breeze and soft light. Enjoy the delights of footpath eating without the crowds barging all around you. Thus, we are heading back to the Bitter Suite this year as we really like it there. This restaurant is located in residential New Farm in a quite backwater and has a great outlook. They have great food, good wines, water, coffee/tea as well as several craft beers & ciders on tap; but there are plenty of other varieties available in bottles. There is food available and they are always improving their menu with their goal to provide an exceptional gastronomic experience along with their exceptional range of beers, ciders and wines. Merthyr Road, with a frequent bus, is nearby, and the CityCat is at the other end of New Farm Park. If you’ve never been to a JTS this is the one to try. It is usual quiet with plenty of outdoor seating. FRI 17th to MON 20th SEPTEMBER SUNDOWN NATIONAL PARK BASECAMP Leader: Matt Palmer Ph: 0438 720 235 Meet at: 6 Emerson St Toowong Time: Early on the Friday afternoon so we can hopefully set up camp in the light, depends on who’s coming Cost: $50 Grade: XL66 Location: West of Stanthorpe Emerg Off: Kerry Mulligan Ph: 0421 022 250 Sundown National Park is an area no longer frequently visited by the club so it is a long overdue expedition to visit an area that is unique in the greater Southeast Queensland region. Sundown has been compared to the Flinders Ranges in its appearances, you would expect to find Sundown a
September 2021 Jilalan Brisbane Catholic Bushwalking Club Page 8 thousand kilometres inland not one hundred and fifty. One of the best ways to explore Sundown is by throughwalk across this arid rocky terrain. We are most likely to head to the Southern Campground where we will spend the night before we are up on the Saturday morning. We will follow Severn River to the McAllister Creek junction. The creek will most likely be dry unless we get a bit of rain but there is likely to be some pools and rapids further upstream. The first major obstacle is Split Rock Falls. We are likely to bypass this with a long ridge travers on the right. The bypass route starts by ascending a ridge on the southern bank a few metres below the falls. We will climb steeply on loose rocks, taking care. We then contour upstream when the ridge starts to level out and descend back into the creek above the gorge. A short distance further lies Double Falls, situated in a spectacular chasm of red cliffs. These are bypassed by a route high up on the southern bank. If we still have time we will head in the direction of Mt Donaldson before retracing our steps some way short of this. On Sunday we will explore Blue Gorge and Ooline Creek, this is likely to be more of an exploratory walk to see how far we are able to get as there are many cliffs and scrambling in this gorge. There will be outstanding views and rugged scenery in an area not so frequently visited. All our walking will be off track and there are no water points so sufficient water will be required for the two days. Night-time temperatures are most likely to be below zero with the daytime most pleasant for walking. As the walk is likely to be very open a broad brim hat and sun cream are recommended. This weekend is for experienced fit walkers who are capable of difficult off-track routes. I am hoping to stay Sunday Night and come back on Monday to give us maximum time Sunday. We will need to allow for extra driving time as we can’t get to the park through the normal route into Tenterfield. Contact me if you would like to nominate for the walk. Matt Palmer SUNDAY 19th SEPTEMBER TALK LIKE A PIRATE DAY For Childhood Cancer FUN Contact: Cap'n Slappy capnslappy@talklikeapirate.com Time: All Day Transport: Two Masted Sloop Location: The High Seas Web: http://talklikeapirate.com/wordpress/ https://www.talklikeapirateday.com.au/lets-get-started Emerg Off: Pat Ph: 3844 5000 pat@ccs.org.au International Talk Like a Pirate Day is a parodic holiday created in 1995 by John Baur (Ol'Chumbucket) and Mark Summers (Cap'n Slappy), of Albany, Oregon, USA., who proclaimed September 19th each year as the day when everyone in the world should talk like a pirate. An observer of this holiday would greet friends not with "Hello, everyone!" but with "Ahoy, maties!" or "Ahoy, me hearties!" The holiday, and its observance, springs from a romanticized view of the Golden Age of Piracy. CHILDHOOD CANCER CONNECTION:

Childhood Cancer Support pat@ccs.org.au Ph: 3844 5000 “The support we receive from Childhood Cancer Support has saved us in so many ways.” “Without Childhood Cancer Support, we would be extremely stressed and in a lot of trouble financially. It would probably push us over the edge.” “They not only provide a fully equipped home away from home, but they also provide services like a shuttle bus to and from the hospital, free groceries, counselling services and family activities. They also connect you with other families who are going through the same experience.” “Knowing we have somewhere to stay while Rosie finished her treatment is a huge relief. We are so grateful for the support from Childhood Cancer Support.” The Story of Childhood Cancer Support: Childhood Cancer Support was formed in 1975 when a group of desperate parents, with children being treated for leukaemia and cancer, met to discuss ways of helping each other and their children. Childhood cancers are distinctly different from their adult forms and, recognising this, these visionaries identified the need to help children that had been diagnosed, and their families. Today, Childhood Cancer Support provides emotional and financial support to regional families through accommodation and a range of support services. The charity is committed to making life easier for families impacted by childhood cancer. September 2021 Jilalan Brisbane Catholic Bushwalking Club Page 10 Come along and complete the pigeon pair which was started in June – climb the other portal of Cunningham’s Gap. Mt Mitchell is part of the Main Range National Park, on the left side of Cunningham’s Gap. It is a relatively easy walk, along a good, graded track to the summit. The track starts out at the saddle carpark, passing through lush deep green rainforest, after which the track climb and turns, commencing the eucalypt forest section. The middle section is quite overgrown, so I recommend wearing long pants. You will be waking in and out of rainforest along the way to the top. Towards the top, the track gets a bit airy for a very small section on a bend. The top third of the walk is beautiful with amazing, well-deserved views. Please bring two litres of water and the usual day walk essentials. Hold a party on top by bringing “special” food items. Try to spot the resident echidna where the eucalypt commences. Please call Russell to nominate Ph: 0437 185 902 MONDAY 20th SEPTEMBER MONTHLY MEETING Contact: Cath Wood Ph 0428 755 100 Time: 7.30pm Where: St Michael’s Parish Hall, 250 Banks St, Dorrington The hall is in the lower carpark behind the church. Drive down the ramp at the left Web: http://www.stmichaelsdorrington.org.au/contact-us.html Our meetings are friendly and relaxed gatherings where members and visitors can hear about recent and upcoming club events and ask questions about walks that interest you. Nominations for walks are taken after the formalities and people catch up over a friendly supper. Ask leaders about their trips and talk with our members about their experiences. All are welcome. Time to come out and have lunch to watch all this go by. Chez Nous is conveniently located opposite the Roma Street Rail & Bus Stations (ground floor of the Abbey on Roma Apartments). It is an ideal location for a catch-up with friends or just a great spot to enjoy a cup of coffee whilst watching the hustle and bustle go by. “Good old-fashioned service, nice coffee and excellent food that represents great value-for-money” – this is the sort of feedback they receive from their loyal and valued customers. The cafe provides a great variety of lunch options. Choose from the popular gourmet sandwiches or home-style hot dishes that will guarantee to make your mouth water. So, whether you are wanting a quick coffee, a fast lunch option or leisurely dine-in meal, Chez Nous caters to everyone.

WEDNESDAY 22nd SEPTEMBER ZILLMAN WATERHOLES CK #2 STROLL Leader: Greg Endicott Ph: 3351 4092 Meet at: Maundrell Tce at Chermside West, stop 48; Stop ID: 003983; Cnr Lawrence Rd Time: 3:30pm Cost: Free Grade: S11 Distance: 7.5km @ 2hr Location: Northern Suburbs – West Chermside, Chermside, Aspley and Geebung Web: https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=16/-27.3736/153.0308 Emerg Off: Greg Ph: 0418 122 995 Bring This Number With You Bring a torch This is the second and last of the Zillman Series of Strolls. Be prepared to receive your Certificate. You will begin up the road from Gerard Majella’s in Maundrell Tce. Here, the Creek has been piped underground, so we will have to find the signs and symptoms of where it used to flow. The first half of this Stroll is walking the streets; following the depressions, gullies, and tree line to where this forgotten creek comes above ground. This is near the old K-Mart (now a Woollies) at Webster Rd, where the party will follow it through Marchant Park and into Aspley. At this juncture, you will see the junction with the Right Branch and go down the garden path followed on Part #1 and onto Geebung Rail Station. Buses to the start are: 336, 338, P343, P344, 345. Home is the train outbound towards Petrie or inbound towards the City. Perhaps dinner at the Geebung RSL around the corner from the Station. Join me for this strolling Stroll. There are numerous ups and downs including one quite steep climb of 250m along with a 150m descent.
September 2021 Jilalan Brisbane Catholic Bushwalking Club Page 12 The walk is just over 12km in length and I recommend that you take the time to enjoy the spectacular views and scenery and to also read the track-side informative signs about the history and nature of the area. It may not look much on the outside, but on the inside, it is “atmospheric”. It is a classic country pub, a lot of wood inside, country decorations, classic bar, and a beer garden out back. It has character. And a unique owner who comes to welcome you. Meringandan is just north of Toowoomba – 145km near and only a 1¾hr drive from home. Take the A2 Warrego H’way, then go on the new Toowoomba Bypass to the Boundary St (Gowrie Junction) Exit, then take Morris Rd, Old Homebush Rd, Old Goombungee Rd and Meringandan Shirley Rd to Main St in Meringandan. It is not all that far – we have gone further than 2hr in the past. We may have to arrange people to get lifts rather than everyone going up in a car by themselves. It is better if you arrange with your friends to go together, however tell me when you nominate if you require a lift. In keeping with tradition, this pub is near a trainline – the main Western Line, and there is a nearby station – Gowrie Junction (however, long gone when the Junction was ripped up). Unless you are a lump of coal, alas, a train will no longer stop for you here. Nominate to me and see you there.

One reason is that it is buried in pipes underground or is growing wild behind sheds in various industrial estates. No matter, we will do our best at following it from Source to Mouth. The first part is along bike tracks in parks, the middle bit is along suburban footpaths, and the last part is in the industrial heartland of Rocklea. There may be some exploring, some back tracking, some attempt at going under bridges – depends how long ago the Council did some mowing. You shall finish at Yeerongpilly Station, so getting home is no obstacle. Come on this, rather early, journey of joy with me.

There are a few gaps in this track, so there is a little “up” at times. If you are game, you can park at Garden City – they do charge to make sure workers do not park there all day. There is a Park’n’Ride beside the bus depot. At the end, there are frequent buses back to Garden City. You will begin your walk by going down through suburbia to Bulimba Creek, with its lush green vegetation & flowing water (and a bike track). You will cross it and skirt bushland to cross Logan Rd and get back to the creekbank proper. From here on, it is bike track all the way. There will be some ups & downs, as the bike track dodges some obstacles and private property. The bank is open and grassed in some places – especially at the start, but once you get to Mansfield it is more enclosed under light tree cover. There not much tap water along the way, and certainly no shops. Bring all the water you will need, and of course, lunch & snacks. Wear a good hat and bring rain protection. This is a very lovely creek with pretty vegetation and the water flowing. There is wildlife along the banks, birds flying around and fellow walkers all around, Come and join me on this lovely walk. September 2021 Jilalan Brisbane Catholic Bushwalking Club Page 17 The walk will start at the Governors Chair Car Park (2km on from the Spicers Picnic/Camping area). The Spicers Gap Road (built in 1859) will be followed for about 2km until we reach the turn off to the Matherson Trail. Here we leave the road and take the Trail until we reach The Jinker. Along this section there are great views of Mt. Mitchell. Once we arrive at the Jinker, we go off-track for a short distance down to a small waterfall (usually dry). Here we will have morning tea. After that we pick up an old overgrown track which will take us back to the Spicers Gap Road (approx 2km). We continue along this historic road until we come to a creek crossing. About 200m along the creek there was an old wagon wheel embedded in the creek. The purpose of this walk was to show you this piece of history. Unfortunately, when I visited this area about 9 months ago, discovered that the wheel had been removed. I made enquiries to National Parks who were unaware of its removal. The mystery of the missing wheel – who took it! Hopefully, I can show you a photo of it on the day. After that we return to the Spicers Gap Road and hopefully head back to the Governors Chair via the Old Telegraph Road. This road was overgrown last time I was there, so we will see what its condition is like on the day. A pleasant walk with varied scenery. A late lunch back at the Governors Chair Lookout. This is not a hard walk, but historically interesting – about 12km. I have chosen this walk as I don’t expect hordes of people to be there, as is the case with many other areas. One horn is buried under the Centenary H’way extension at Springfield, and the other comes out of the Greenbank Army Training Camp (a bit difficult to enter, unless you run faster than a speeding bullet). We shall begin the actual Stroll at Woogaroo St at Lochwood Ave, Ellen Grove, and head towards our Creek. Wonder upon wonder, this creek remains above ground all of it’s course to the River. One problem is that there is acreage, thus no path or track runs beside it as the water flows over this private property. For half the time you will be beside the creek to hear the gentle flow of water over the chirping happy birds; the other half you will have to imagine the sound of flowing water as you Stroll along the footpaths. This part of the suburb is a bit of a backwater so there will be minimum traffic and activity. We have passed the equinox; thus, the daylight is now longer than the dark – gives us more time to explore while Strolling. This is a complexly new territory for us Strollers, and the Club in general, so come along to explore an area where no one has ever been before. I’m looking forward to exploring this unknown virgin territory.

Web: https://caxton.com.au/ Emerg Off: Greg Ph: 0418 122 995 We tried to go to this venue in August, but as all the NRL games have moved to Queensland because of COVID-19, we had to postpone it. So, we are trying again. The Caxton has also been on the radar for quite a while and as there are no events scheduled for that night it seems like a good idea to go there. As it is a hotel you all know what to expect. A large range of beers, wines and soft drinks as well as the usual pub grub. The hotel is very central and easily accessible by most forms of transport. Unfortunately, I won’t be there as we need to travel to Melbourne. SATURDAY 16th OCTOBER Mts NINDERRY and COOLUM DAYWALK Leader: Michele Johns Ph: 0414 635 542 Meet at: St Brigid's Car Park, 78 Musgrave Rd, Red Hill Time: 7.00am Cost: $25 Grading: S44 Location: Near Yandina and Coolum Web: https://www.weekendnotes.com/climbing-mt-ninderry/ Emerg Off: Michele Endicott Ph: 3351 4092 After leaving Red Hill, we will regroup at Yandina, before driving a short distance to the carpark at the start of the climb up Mt Ninderry. The climb to the top is not difficult although there are numerous rough stone steps to negotiate. This track has become popular with joggers doing the return trip in less than an hour. We will be taking a more leisurely pace as there are a number of lookouts at the top to enjoy. Our morning tea stop will be taken at one of these lookouts after which we will descend to the cars for the drive to the bottom of Mt Coolum. Mt Coolum has become a real tourist Mecca and I expect parking to be at a premium. We will park where we can and regather at the start of the walk. The walk up the tourist route is a well-maintained track with some stone steps, steep but not difficult. We will have lunch on the summit before walking down the back of the mountain and returning to the cars by walking clockwise around the base. We will be back at the cars with plenty of time to grab a coffee before heading home. This will be a popular exhibition, and with Covid rules still in place (the New Normal), numbers in the gallery will be restricted. There may be queuing due to this. Thus, be very early. EUROPEAN MASTERPIECES From The Metropolitan Museum Of Art, New York. The Met is under renovation, so the best way to protect the art works when builders are about, is to remove them completely and send them overseas. Brisbane is the only location in Australia to host these paintings. They will never leave New York again. Spanning 500 years, ‘European Masterpieces from The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York’ offers a breath-taking journey from the 1420s and emerging Renaissance to conclude at the height of early twentieth century post-impressionism. This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity allows visitors to experience works by painters such as Fra Angelico, Titian, Raphael, Rembrandt, Turner, Van Gogh and Monet, direct from The Met’s collection – one of the finest collections of European painting in the world, the majority of which rarely leave permanent display in New York. Highlights of the exhibition include Fra Angelico’s finely painted altarpiece The Crucifixion of 1420– 23; Titian’s poetic Venus and Adonis of the 1550s; the immediacy and drama of Caravaggio’s The Musicians 1597; Rembrandt’s painterly Flora of 1654; Vermeer’s beautifully observed Allegory of the Catholic Faith 1670-72, and van Gogh’s idyllic The Flowering Orchard 1888. ‘European Masterpieces’ includes portraiture, still-life, landscape & figure studies and will be a must- see for audiences of all ages, art-lovers and anyone with an interest in history, society, beauty, religious iconography, mythology and symbolism. This Australian-exclusive exhibition is organised by The Metropolitan Museum of Art, in collaboration with the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art and Art Exhibitions Australia. This will be a very popular exhibition, so you should book earlier rather than closer to the date. Our visit is the last day of the Exhibition – so all the latecomers will be trying to get is at the last moment. The reflections on the river and in the everglades are just beautiful, especially early in the mornings. Just make sure you have a waterproof case for your camera / phone. Both the camp sites have toilets. Everything has to be transported by canoe, so you will need to pack light with gear that will fit in barrels. There is only ONE more place available for this trip with the current bookings, so to reserve your spot contact me by email and I will give you bank details for paying your deposit. September 2021 Jilalan Brisbane Catholic Bushwalking Club Page 23 The Griffith Uni Bus Station is one of our favourites as many Strolls can begin from here and head off to all points of the compass. We have been on/around Mt G several times, but not to the top. Now is your chance to overlook Brisbane at sunset – all those lovely award-winning shots coming up. At 189m, you cannot really call this a mountain. It needs to be 308.803m to be anything near a mountain. It is just a little mount. Thus, your goal is attainable. The last time I went up this track to the top, it was eroded and loose underfoot – perhaps walking poles might be a good idea. The track is steepish and constant – you can take as long as you like getting to the summit – we shall wait. This is a traverse Stroll, so will be de-summiting the other side and ending up in suburbia. You shall follow the quite back streets around the northern side to re-enter Griffith Uni, going through the campus back to the Busway Station. Some may want to bail-out at Circular Dr at Griffith University, stop B Stop ID: 002253 to get the Bus 112 to The City or the 177 to Carindale. This will be a very interesting Stroll in that it will appear un-Stroll like for a lot of you – us hardened Strollers will know what to expect. Come join me on this very scenic and photogenic Stroll to the heights of delight. 30th OCT to 2nd NOV VICTORIAN ALPS THROUGHWALK CANCELLED Cancelled due to the continuing Covid Lockdown in Victoria. The lockdown may be lifted by November but I seriously doubt it will be lifted by then and I am looking for other opportunities to make alternative plans. ANNUAL PHOTO COMPETITION MONDAY 20th DECEMBER At St Michaels at Ashgrove from 7.30pm This is the seventeenth time we have had this photo competition. The main reasons for the photo competition are to encourage members to bring their photographs out and to share them with other members. The other reason is to find a “cover photograph” for the Annual Report. Our goal as a club is to encourage the love of the bush and bushwalking. I trust the photographs will display the spirit of the Club and the beauty of nature and why we go bushwalking. The best overall photograph will go on the front cover of the Annual Report. The categories of the competition are – 1. Landscape - this includes all the landscapes, waterscapes, mountains, 2. Moods of nature - sunrises, sunsets, storm and rain or misty days, 3. Nature Close up - plants, animals, birds, rocks, leaf litter etc., 4. People and faces - portraiture & club character, 5. Miscellaneous - any photos that do not fit into any other category, 6. Best overall - awarded to the print deemed to be best overall by the invited judge, 7. People’s choice - the best photo selected by the members.
