CLUB NEWS re Cric ke Did You Know? po tC Sin ga lu b Established 1852 BI CE AL N TE N NI 1938 was an important year for the Club. It was the year that the Club first made the unanimous decision to accept women for Associate membership although no voting powers were given till the 1980s. Once quoted by the press to be “Singapore’s most famous male sanctum”, SCC might have possibly been the first club in Singapore to take the step forward. Female Members made their mark at the opening function in 1938 with a novelty cricket match between their own eleven and a male Club eleven. Within a year, 22 associate female Members were elected to the Club. 1938 was also the year that the Clubhouse had a major facelift for its premises, to provide Members a more comfortable and prestigious setting. The Men’s Bar, which was previously located at the current Oval Restaurant, was known for its strict rule of permitting only male Members. This was a popular place for male Members to recline after a good game or socialize over a few pints of beers. In the event that a wife or girlfriend entered the Men’s Bar in search of their partner, by the rule of thumb, the male Member would have to buy a drink for everyone in the bar, all done in good nature, of course. Fast forward to today, after its relocation to the basement where it is still named the Men’s Bar for the sake of legacy, the Club lifted that rule and it is now a welcome venue for all Members. OBITUARIES The Club records, with deep regret, the passing of our Members. Our sincere condolences go out to the families of the departed. CLUB OPERATING HOURS Mr Mogens C.E. CLUB NEWS Reciprocal Club Review: The Oriental Club, London, UK. The Happy Traveller In my 20 years in the Singapore Cricket Club, I have always been happy and satisfied with the facilities provided by the Club, but there is one thing I never got around to make use of and that was the reciprocal rights provided throughout many clubs in the world, which the SCC staff and management are in constant pursuit of upgrading to provide us, the members, with a friendly and “home away from home” feel. This changed back in August of 2018, when I went to London for a couple of visits split over two weeks. London of course being the metropole it is, is famous for many great things as well as for its sky-high hotel prices. A friendly advice from a friend and colleague as well as a glance through our website revealed that in the heart of London, and only a 5-minute walk from my office, The Oriental Club is located, where they provide comfortable rooms which can be used by visiting reciprocal club members. The process of booking my room was simpler than simple. A quick email to their booking / reservations desk at The Oriental Club was responded to immediately, outlining the availability and price which I must point out was very favourable, Bar Captain Mr. Dalibor and his colleague Ms. Elena considering its location just opposite Bond Street Station (Oxford Street). All they needed was my credit card details along with a LOI (Letter of Introduction) from SCC to secure the booking. I was quite excited to check in, and upon my arrival a late Sunday night in August, I was greeted at the front desk by a very polite and accommodating staff member of the club. The club and its facilities are right up the alley of the SCC, so already there the home-away-from-home feel started to make its impact. Much to my delight, I found the room to be of good standard, with its en-suite bathroom and all the amenities of a normal hotel room. Throughout my stay, I had the pleasure of enjoying scrumptious breakfasts in the club’s restaurant, enjoying the warm August evenings in the beautiful courtyard, while hosting colleagues / clients in the Bar, where Mr. Dali, the friendly bar captain was in full control. Fine selections of wine and drinks were on offer, and again at very favourable prices, while the level of service was top-notch. And if that was not enough, the bar counter served Curry with Basmati rice that hit the spot so well, that I actually thought I could have been sitting at the SCC terrace. All in all, it was a marvellous experience that I would suggest SCC Members to go and experience for themselves going forward. It was so enjoyable that I have booked myself in once again for my next upcoming trip to London. Yours Truly Oliver E. Andersen – A new fan of the reciprocal club system on offer. FE ATURE WOMEN OF SCC! In celebration of the International Women’s Day in March, The Padang spoke to six female SCC Members who are powerhouses in their own right. Zaibun Siraj Co-Founder and Past President of the Association of Women for Action and Research (AWARE) You have spent much of your life actively involved in civic society, even at a time when it was considered highly unconventional for women to speak up. What aspect of your work particularly resonates with you? Since the 1980s I have worked to influence the Media to portray women in a positive manner. The Media, in particular advertising is very powerful. It shapes people’s attitudes and beliefs and these in turn influence our behavior. Hence, it is important to create an awareness of sexism in the Media and to get men, women and children to reject sexist images. Sexist images and sexist language suggest derogatory, stereotypical ideas about women’s abilities, potential or characters. The implication of the message is that women are weak, inferior, subservient, dependent or subordinate in relation to men. It has been most satisfying over the years to see some change do, we cannot protect ourselves. In today’s world, we must develop in the way women are now portrayed in the Media. I conducted intellectual curiosity, critical thinking and the higher order thinking research into the topic, organized campaigns like Spot the Sexist Ad skills of analysis, synthesis and evaluation. We must develop the Campaign, wrote letters of protest on sexist images that appeared ability to think differently and the courage to propose a different point in the Media, presented talks and wrote papers. Not only did I enjoy of view. We must stand up for ourselves. all of this work but I found it stimulating, challenging and satisfying. FEATURE Sara Cheng Chief Executive Officer Fuji Xerox Singapore How do you build a career for yourself in male-dominated industries? My first job was a Financial Analyst for Procter & Gamble who is the leader in the Consumer Product industry and I got into the Hi-tech industry purely by chance. But regardless of which industry you are in, career opportunities are formed by a combination of opportunity, capability and your performance reputation. When I looked back, I see several turning points which led to where I am today: 1. Ask for the job you want – when I first moved from Consumer Products to Hi-tech industry, I was in Finance. I asked to be considered for sales and then I asked to be in business consulting. Both times, I was given the opportunities. They would not have happened had I not asked for them. 2. Know your passion – early in my career I was presented with a big promotion to become a project manager. I declined because I preferred to learn and solve customers’ business issues. Soon after, the business consulting job became available. 3. Find and learn from mentors/coaches – these are the senior managers in the company whom you respect. Ask 1 or 2 to be your informal mentors/coaches who can help you navigate the organization and show you leadership qualities. 4. Build a network both inside and outside of your company – I wish I had started on this much earlier! Networking does not have to be pretentious. I am surprised by the number of genuinely interesting people I have met since I made a real effort on this. The more senior you go, the more your network will carry you. Speaking of being in male dominated environments, I love being different and taking full advantage of it. People listen to and remember me more and I am always mindful in building my personal brand and creating the most impact whenever I can. Why should organizations invest in and nurture women talent? Women account for 50% of the world population. “How to improve gender equality in the workplace?” reached Google’s top 5% Can Women “Have it ALL”? searchers around gender equality last year. My question is, why shouldn’t any organization invest in and nurture female talent? “Have it all” started almost 20 years ago meaning for women to accomplish in both family and professional lives. In most advanced Gender equality globally is a complex issue reflecting difference countries like Singapore, women are presented with many choices. in values and opportunities for women in different societies. But no matter which path we choose, there are always opportunity costs – business trips away from your loved ones, In Singapore, I think we are very lucky that we have plenty of time to have children, giving up a promotion, time to exercise, taking opportunities for women in education and job market. At Fuji Xerox a part time rather than a full time job, etc. Singapore, female employees account for 37% of our total work force and 50% of the managers. So make your choice with your eyes open and live it with your heart open. The more visible challenge in the workforce in Singapore to me is the lack of women in the top leadership positions and board rooms. We need policy makers and corporate leaders to take actions to remove If you could have dinner with any woman, living or dead, the glass ceiling. I wouldn’t be half the person that I am without her constant love, Are there any differences in the way male and female support and guidance and that has inspired me to try to do my part athletics are treated that you would like to see changed? for others, especially young girls all around the world. Yes, there are differences. There is a concept that women are not as good as men at sports and that is reflected in the way we are marketed, the pay structure and the opportunities afforded to us among others. Moreover during training, they sometimes go easy on girls when playing together in a same sport because they think we can’t step up or maybe even be afraid to get too rough in case we get hurt. Physically we are built differently and that’s probably the only difference actually but that can be worked on. Physical strength can be challenging but skills and mental strength are things we can work on and we can be just as good or even better then male athletes. I’ve been very lucky to be playing for SCC where I’ve never once been treated differently. If anything the boys at SCC challenge me more and give me opportunities to step up. You won the Sports Woman of the Year award at the SCC Sports Awards 2018; how has your journey with SCC helped you in your sporting and personal development? It’s an amazing feeling. Being given an opportunity to play with the men is something not many female cricketers would have had. SCC not only gave me the opportunity but they recognised my efforts and awarded me with the SCC Sports Award. It gave me more confidence and encouraged me to push myself and focus on playing at a higher division for the Club What is one thing sports has taught you that has helped you in your career? One thing that I have learned through playing and coaching is that sports is a great leveler. You could deliver a match-winning performance one day and be the cause of your team’s defeat on another but the key is to retain a balanced perspective wherein we are neutral in the face of both success and adversity. This is easier said than done especially in the age of social media 22 THE PADANG MAR / APR 2019
FEATURE Melissa Tyndale-Biscoe Senior Director Communications & Public Affairs Asia Pacific Johnson & Johnson What are some strategies that can help women achieve a more prominent role in their organizations? Be yourself and stop apologising. Have you noticed how many times women say sorry when they don’t need to apologize? I don’t know why but it’s something women do all the time and they don’t need to – be confident in your decisions, even if they require compromise and negotiation. And accept that you are enough, stop thinking everyone is better than you and know that what you bring to home and work is valued and appreciated. What advice would you give to younger women starting out in their careers? Most women look to find a mentor to help them and this can help. However what many women overlook is the importance having good sponsors to advance their careers. A sponsor, unlike a mentor, will provide positive feedback on work you have done in the organization and are, in many instances, instrumental in helping you move to your next role. If you could have dinner with any woman, living or dead, Is it at all possible to balance a career and marriage, real or fictional, past or present, who would it be and while also making time for yourself? why? Absolutely! For me it comes down to making choices about when I would have dinner with my mother, because I still can. Often we and where to spend your time. It’s not always easy and sometimes overlook how precious our parents are and don’t realise this until the choices are very hard, especially when it comes to sacrificing they are no longer with us. Living in Singapore, I don’t get to see my short term family time for longer term gain. My advice though is to be mother as often as I would like so she would be my first choice for clear within yourself what you want and then discuss it openly with all dinner companion every time. those involved so everyone can see the full picture. Nicci Meek Strategic Partner Manager Are there any assumptions about women that you would like to see changed? I would change the fact that there are assumptions in general. Every woman is an individual and has different strengths, different things they enjoy, different reactions to situations and different goals for their own lives, so generalizing women as a whole isn’t super beneficial. As a woman, how do you measure success? I’m pretty big on goal setting, both small (daily & weekly) and large (quarterly & yearly) and for work as well as personal. As I hit each of the goals, that equals success to me and that’s how I measure. I’m pretty guilty of moving onto the next thing before I’ve absorbed that the goal has been achieved so maybe that is something to work on for 2019! What’s one key leadership lesson you’ve learned along the way? That to be trusted and valued is the most empowering feeling you can give someone. I’ve been lucky enough to work for a lot of great leaders, who inspired me to work really hard for them because of how they treated me, in fact I still work for one of those people right now! Name one female who has impacted your life and how: My first female boss was a lady named Judy Rush, I worked with her in Kansas City when I was 22 or 23. She opened me up to a lot of new experiences and introduced me to the concept of vision boards which I have done every year since. These have changed my life. To me she really reflected the type of person I wanted to be one day, very skilled at what she did but extremely humble, compassionate and open. MAR / APR 2019 THE PADANG 23
FE ATURE Tracy Jones Project Manager, HSBC Singapore Rugby Sevens Sport SG Why is it important for women to pursue their own interests and maintain their individuality even after marriage? We’re in 2019 and the ability for women to pursue their own interests should not be in question. Since you first joined SCC, what changes have you observed in female representation in the Club? I do believe that female members speak up more than previously and have seen more representation on some of the Sub-Committees. However, the one gap that still remains is at General Committee level – since I joined the Club in 1998, you can count the number of women that have served on the GC with one hand. One of the challenges is that spouse members are not permitted to serve on the GC which rules out quite a number of women. There seems to be more younger female members who have joined SCC to play sports like Hockey, Netball, Tennis and Squash. They should actively be encouraged to play a bigger role in the Club, beyond just sports. How can female members take on an even more active role in the Club? Firstly, women have to be confident in themselves that they have as much if not more to contribute than men. I also know that Members of the GC have tried to get more women involved, but I think women will be more likely to volunteer if they knew there would be others getting involved at the same time. One suggestion I have is for the GC to get a small group of women together for a focus group discussion to seek their advice and opinions on how to get more women involved and perhaps even identify individuals who might be interested. It is important to then act on the suggestions that are given. What in your life has brought or given you the greatest satisfaction or fulfillment? On a personal level, I guess still being happily married after 22 years is an achievement! On a professional level, my earlier career took a bit of a back seat because my husband’s job required us to relocate several times. However, over the last 4 years I have been involved in running the HSBC Singapore Rugby Sevens – being part of a team that operates a tournament which is respected globally, has given me a lot of satisfaction. About International Women’s Day International Women’s Day (IWD) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. It is celebrated annually on 8 March, and has been occurring for more than a century, with the first IWD gathering in 1911. The International Women’s Day campaign theme for 2019 is #BalanceforBetter, calling for the building of a gender-balanced world. From grassroots activism to worldwide action, we are entering an exciting period of history where the world expects balance. We notice its absence and celebrate its presence. Balance is not a women’s issue, it’s a business issue. The race is on for the gender- balanced boardroom, a gender-balanced government, gender-balanced media coverage, a gender-balance of employees, more gender-balance in wealth, gender-balanced sports coverage, etc. Gender balance is essential for economies and communities to thrive. Balance drives a better working world. Let’s all help create a #BalanceforBetter. For more information, you can visit https://www.internationalwomensday.com. 24 THE PADANG MAR / APR 2019
