Concordia Lutheran School The HKCC hosted Concordia Lutheran School. As 35 kids filled the Ground, smiles could be seen on everyone’s faces. After an introduction to the basic concepts of cricket and history of the sport in Hong Kong, students took to the Cricket Centre to play throwing activities and team building between each other. Conducted by our women’s cricket coach, Cri Zelda Brits, they learned how to develop confidence and good sportsmanship. With the sole focus of developing the sport, the contribution of HKCC in the sporting community for schools will continue to grow. The programmes have been a great experience for all involved and it is wonderful to see a variety of children attempting new sports. THE PINKUN | September | 2018 13

His bowling was rather the opposite but, safe to say, he remembered the one wicket he took for the Scorps! Scorpions’ captains all! He was presented with a photograph of the Club, the inscription on which said “Presented to David Mallinson. A true Sportsman in every sense”. GOLF T he June event was a washout with no-one getting past seven holes before the heavens opened and the course was flooded. The July event went ahead with fortunately no weather dramas. As to the results, some things never change as both winners were very familiar to us all. Eamonn O’Connell with 38 points proved too strong for the men and Ann Coughlan with 29 was best of the ladies. However, we did have Caroline Shelley winning the Longest Drive for the first time, much to her delight. Andrew Steadson won the Men’s with Robert and Musetta winning Nearest the Pin. Our August event went ahead in overcast conditions with just a little rain. The course was very wet underfoot but with the greens in excellent condition, good scoring was still possible. In the men’s event, fighting out for top spot were Tim Chillington and Alex Shephard, both hitting a fine 39 points with Tim winning on a countback. For the ladies, the winner was Mabel Mak with 29 playing in her last tournament before her departure to the UK. Long Drive was won by Musetta Zimmermann and Greg Paull and the Near Pins were won by Ann Coughlan and Mark Coleman. HKCC Phoenix Hills Golf Outing On the 27 & 28 July, the Golf Society travelled to Phoenix Hills Golf Club for the first time ever. 6 brave and golf crazy souls signed up for this outing during the rainy season and luckily we were greeted with sunny skies and a welcome sign to match. The overnight stay had everyone ready to tackle the 27 hole layout playing each A, B and C courses. All three 9 hole courses were well looked after. The greens were good and the fairways were well groomed and recently cut. To golf in China, I can speak on behalf of everyone that we were all pleased to be able to have access to a course with such great service, a 5-star accommodation, and friendly company. This was a lovely golf trip to have organised and one we all hope to go again soon. Kingsley Kelly Sports Development THE PINKUN | September | 2018 20

SQUASH Masters Summer League 2018 - by Richard Collis, M3 Convenor Masters players don’t stop because it’s summer… Officially, the HK Squash season runs from October until May. However, over the last 5 or so years, a number of clubs of like minded squashies have decided that there are still a number of players that want to enjoy all facets (more on what that means later…) of the game over the summer months in a more relaxed format than the official leagues; none more eager than of course the “Masters” players! So, what’s a “Masters” squash player? SQUASH Jesters Tour Hong Kong - by Russell Lamb O n 14th July, HKCC welcomed a touring squash side from the North of England, the Jesters. The Jesters describe themselves as a historic nomadic club, established in the 1920s, with about 3000 members worldwide. Calibrating the standard of touring teams is always tricky, so (to be on the safe side) we fielded a team of nine strong players and as it happened, most of the games were fairly evenly- matched. Mike Chin had a close game against his Jesters’ counterpart, Scott. In probably the most evenly-matched game all day, both players exhibited similar playing styles, relying on a combination of power and patience when needed. Scott just pipped it 3-2 in this closest of encounters but it could have gone either way. Hugh Dyus played the Jesters Number One, Ross Mchoul, the Head Squash Coach of one of the big Edinburgh sports clubs. The fact that Ross had his own racket sponsor gave some indication Hugh was in for a tough match! Hugh certainly held his own on the skills front leading to some great rallies, although Ross (perhaps due to being a little bit younger) used his speed well and finished a 3-0 winner. Liam then played Nicky Horne, a former age group England international player. Another great game with players using all four corners led to Liam coming home with the victory. Chris finished his game 3-0, his power game proving too much for his younger opponent. Similarly Jess and Charmaine both proved too strong with their fitness and speed to the ball put to good effect, whilst Matthieu’s unorthodox front court game caused endless problems. I played against John, a squash coach at Barnard • Rajeev L (retired) Castle School in Durham, a place I had visited many times at school to play or • Chris Evans W get beaten by) at rugby. Hope you recover soon Rajeev!
