The Third Sunday of Advent 11 a.m., Sunday, December 12, 2021 Newcomers and visitors, we welcome you warmly. May you find here, by the grace of God, that which feeds your soul. May you leave here with a heart prepared to serve. If this is your first time here, we invite you to fill out a Welcome Card found on the Welcome Table in the courtyard.
The Word of God Voluntary Fantasy on "Veni Emmanuel" Kenneth Leighton Hymn At The Procession Hymnal, #59 Opening Acclamation Blessed are you, holy and living One. You come to your people and set them free. 2
Lighting Of The Advent Wreath God of light and our salvation, in your name we light these candles. Fill us with your joy and help us shine as a light to the world. Amen. Collect For Purity Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Kyrie Eleison The following is sung, all standing 3
The Collect Of The Day God be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. Stir up your power, O Lord, and with great might come among us; and, because we are sorely hindered by our sins, let your bountiful grace and mercy speedily help and deliver us; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen. First Reading Zephaniah 3: 14-20 A Reading from the Book of the Prophet Zephaniah. Sing aloud, O daughter Zion; shout, O Israel! Rejoice and exult with all your heart, O daughter Jerusalem! The Lord has taken away the judgments against you, he has turned away your enemies. The king of Israel, the Lord, is in your midst; you shall fear disaster no more. On that day it shall be said to Jerusalem: Do not fear, O Zion; do not let your hands grow weak. The Lord, your God, is in your midst, a warrior who gives victory; 4
he will rejoice over you with gladness, he will renew you in his love; he will exult over you with loud singing as on a day of festival. I will remove disaster from you, so that you will not bear reproach for it. I will deal with all your oppressors at that time. And I will save the lame and gather the outcast, and I will change their shame into praise and renown in all the earth. At that time I will bring you home, at the time when I gather you; for I will make you renowned and praised among all the peoples of the earth, when I restore your fortunes before your eyes, says the Lord. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Gradual Canticle 9 The First Song of Isaiah Surely, it is / God ' who / saves me; * I will trust in him / and ' not / be ' a-/fraid. For the Lord is my stronghold and my / sure ' de-/fense, * and / he ' will / be ' my / Savior. Therefore you shall draw / water ' with re-/joicing * from the / springs / of ' sal-/vation. And on that day / you ' shall / say, * Give thanks to the Lord and / call ' up-/on ' his / Name; Make his deeds known a-/mong ' the / peoples; * see that they remember / that ' his / Name is ' ex-/alted. 5
Sing the praises of the Lord, for he has done / great / things, * and this is / known ' in / all ' the / world. Cry aloud, inhabitants of Zion, / ring out ' your / joy, * for the great one in the midst of you is the / Hol'y / One ' of / Israel. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the / Hol'y / Spirit: * as it was in the beginning, is now, and / will be ' for / ever. ' A-/men. Second Reading Philippians 4:4-7 A Reading from the Letter of Paul to the Philippians. Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 6
Sequence Hymn Hymnal, #65 All stand. The Holy Gospel Luke 3:7-18 The Holy Gospel of our Savior Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, Lord Christ. John said to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bear fruits worthy of repentance. Do not begin to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our ancestor'; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. Even now the ax is lying at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire." And the crowds asked him, "What then should we do?" In reply he said to them, "Whoever has two coats must share with anyone who has none; and whoever has food must do likewise." Even tax collectors came to be baptized, and they asked him, "Teacher, what should we do?" He said to them, "Collect no more than the amount prescribed for you." Soldiers also asked him, "And we, what should we do?" He said to them, "Do not extort money from anyone by threats or false accusation, and be 7
satisfied with your wages." As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah, John answered all of them by saying, "I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire." So, with many other exhortations, he proclaimed the good news to the people. The Gospel of our Savior. Praise to you, Lord Christ. The Homily The Rev. David Erickson The people are seated. The Nicene Creed The people stand. We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven 8
and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Prayers Of The People In peace, we pray to you, gracious God. O God, in the stillness of this Advent season, let us be guided by the light of your word. O come, Emmanuel, come. We live in unsettling times, give us the strength to rely on you alone and do your will. By the light of your word, O come, Emmanuel, come. Your people share feelings of longing and passion for a world of justice and peace, be a lamp before our feet on this journey. We pray for (N.). By the light of your word, O come, Emmanuel, come. We are a people adrift on a hurting planet, help us turn back to you. By the light of your word, O come, Emmanuel, come. Our trust is born from the gift of love, wrap us in your healing embrace. We pray for those in our community who have asked for our prayers (N.) and for those who have died, including (N.) By the light of your word, O come, Emmanuel, come. 9
We yearn for the birth of the Incarnate One, bless all whose lives have touched ours. We give thanks for the our many blessings, including (N.) By the light of your word, O come, Emmanuel, come. The celebrant ends the prayer with a closing collect. Life-giving God, you hovered over the waters of the deep before time began. Hover over our anxious hearts, laden with earthly woes yet vibrating with hope, that, in this season of anticipation, we might faithfully tend the mysteries before us and prepare for your coming. Amen. Confession Of Sin Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. The people kneel, as able. Minister and People Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of our Savior Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. The Celebrants stands and says Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen. 10
The Peace All stand. The peace of Christ be always with you. And also with you. The Ministers and the People may greet one another in peace. Greeting And Announcements The people are seated. The Holy Communion Offertory Sentence The Celebrant says Walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself for us, an offering and sacrifice to God. Ephesians 5:2 Anthem At The Offertory Conditor Alme Siderum Tomás Luis da Victoria Sung by St. Mary's Parish Choir Creator of the stars of night, Thy people's everlasting light, Jesu, Redeemer, save us all, and hear Thy servants when they call. Thou, grieving that the ancient curse should doom to death a universe, hast found the medicine, full of grace, to save and heal a ruined race. Thou camest, the Bridegroom of the bride, as drew the world to evening tide, proceeding from a virgin shrine, the spotless Victim all divine. 11
At whose dread Name, majestic now, all knees must bend, all hearts must bow; and things celestial Thee shall own, and things terrestrial Lord alone. O Thou whose coming is with dread, to judge and doom the quick and dead, preserve us, while we dwell below, from every insult of the foe. To God the Father, God the Son, and God the Spirit, Three in One, laud, honour, might, and glory be from age to age eternally. Amen. -7th Century Hymn, tr. John Mason Neale Facing the Holy Table, the Celebrant proceeds It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Almighty God, Creator of heaven and earth. Because in Jesus Christ you established your reign of righteousness and peace, giving us partnership in its manifestation and hope for its fulfillment. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and 12
Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: Sanctus & Benedictus Celebrant and People 13
The People stand or kneel. The Celebrant continues We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh. For in these last days you sent Jesus to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In Christ, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In Christ, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life. On the night before he died for us, our Savior Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper Jesus took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is 14
shed for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Therefore, according to his command, O Father, Celebrant and People We remember Christ’s death, We proclaim Christ’s resurrection, We await Christ’s coming in glory; The Celebrant continues And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Savior of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us in the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, through whom we are acceptable to you, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with Mary the Christ Bearer and all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your children; through Jesus Christ our Savior, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation. By Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty God, now and for ever. AMEN. The Lord’s Prayer And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, People and Celebrant Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. 15
The Breaking of the Bread Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; Therefore let us keep the feast. Agnus Dei The Celebrant says The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving. 16
The Communion A Spotless Rose Herbert Howells (1892-1983) Sung by St. Mary's Parish Choir A spotless Rose is blowing, Sprung from a tender root, Of ancient seers' foreshowing, Of Jesse promis'd fruit; Its fairest bud unfolds to light Amid the cold, cold winter, And in the dark midnight. The Rose which I am singing, Whereof Isaiah said, Is from its sweet root springing In Mary, purest Maid; For through our God's great love and might The Blessed Babe she bare us In a cold, cold winter's night. -14th Century, anon., tr. Catherine Winkworth Communion Music Post-Communion Prayer After Communion, the Celebrant says Let us pray. Celebrant and People Eternal God, you have graciously accepted us as living members of our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in this Sacrament. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Savior. Amen. 17
Blessing Closing Hymn Hymnal, #76 Dismissal Let us go forth in the name of Christ. Thanks be to God. Voluntary Chorale Prelude on "Es ist gewißlich an der Zeit" J. S.
