The Third Sunday in Lent March 20, 2022, 10:00 am A PARISH OF THE ANGLICAN DIOCESE OF NEW WESTMINSTER The Right Reverend John Stephens, Bishop The Reverend Lorne Manweiler, Rector We are happy and honoured that you’ve joined us this morning— Welcome! whether in-person or online via Facebook and the parish website. If you need a place to take a break with your child, a nursery area is available. Washrooms are available on the main level of the church. Please ask a We’re glad sidesperson or your neighbour if you have questions or need assistance. you’re here! You’re warmly invited to join us for refreshments in the parish hall following the service. About the Gospel Today: “Spiritual Up-Keep” Repentance can be a tricky concept, especially as the idea appears in today’s gospel. “Unless you repent you will all perish” transforms pretty quickly into “I gotta ask God to forgive me or I’m gonna go to hell.” But simply admitting that what we did was wrong so we can ask God to forgive us isn’t repentance; without a change of heart it’s nothing more than a good-works expression of magical thinking designed to comfort us with the idea that we’re off the hook. Repentance assumes the perspective of “I did this, I wish I hadn’t, and I never want to do it again.” While we always trust the promise of God’s forgiveness, it might be enlightening to do the confession without asking God to forgive us—shifting the emphasis from what we want for our own sake to how we want to change for God’s sake.
The Holy Eucharist Book of Alternative Services, pp. 185 ff. – T HE G ATHERING OF THE C OMMUNITY – Prelude Erhalt uns, Herr, bei deinem Wort Johann Gottfried Walther (1684-1748) Welcome Processional Hymn CP 170 – “The Glory of these Forty Days” Acknowledgement Celebrant We begin by acknowledging that we live, work, play, and worship on the traditional and unceded territory of the Coast Salish peoples including the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and Səl̓ílwətaʔ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. All May our words and our actions reflect our awareness and appreciation of this. A moment of silence for reflection is kept. Celebrant The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all. People And also with you. Celebrant Almighty God, All to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hidden. Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. -2-
Confession and Absolution Celebrant Dear friends in Christ, God is steadfast in love and infinite in mercy; he welcomes sinners and invites them to his table. Let us confess our sins, confident in God’s forgiveness. Most merciful God, All We confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us, that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your name. Amen. Celebrant Almighty God have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. All Amen. The Peace Celebrant The peace of the Lord be always with you. People And also with you. -3-
Kyrie eleison – Lord, Have Mercy (Kyrie; ELW Setting 3) -4-
Collect of the Day Celebrant Eternal God, your kingdom has broken into our troubled world through the life, death, and resurrection of your Son. Help us to hear your word and obey it, and bring your saving love to fruition in our lives, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. All Amen. Children’s Chat – T HE P ROCLAMATION OF THE W ORD – Old Testament Isiah 55:1-9 read by Sheryl MacKay To those who have experienced long years in exile, the return to their homeland is a celebration of abundant life. God calls them into an everlasting covenant of love. Those who return to God will enjoy new life and forgiveness, because God’s ways are not our ways. Ho, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and you that have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen carefully to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food. Incline your ear, and come to me; listen, so that you may live. I will make with you an everlasting covenant, my steadfast, sure love for David. See, I made him a witness to the peoples, a leader and commander for the peoples. See, you shall call nations that you do not know, and nations that do not know you shall run to you, because of the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, for he has glorified you. Seek the Lord while he may be found, call upon him while he is near; let the wicked forsake their way, and the unrighteous their thoughts; let them return to the Lord, that he may have mercy on them, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways, says the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so -5-
are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return there until they have watered the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and succeed in the thing for which I sent it. For you shall go out in joy, and be led back in peace; the mountains and the hills before you shall burst into song, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands. Instead of the thorn shall come up the cypress; instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle; and it shall be to the Lord for a memorial, for an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off. NRSV Reader Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church. All Thanks be to God. Psalm 63:1-8 Celebrant O God, you are my God; eagerly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my flesh faints for you, as in a barren and dry land where there is no water. People Therefore I have gazed upon you in your holy place, that I might behold your power and your glory. Celebrant For your loving-kindness is better than life itself; my lips shall give you praise. People So will I bless you as long as I live and lift up my hands in your name. Celebrant My soul is content, as with marrow and fatness, and my mouth praises you with joyful lips, People When I remember you upon my bed, and meditate on you in the night watches. Celebrant For you have been my helper, and under the shadow of your wings I will rejoice. All My soul clings to you; your right hand holds me fast. -6-
Second Reading 1 Corinthians 10:1-13 read by Sheryl MacKay Paul uses images from Hebrew Scriptures and prophecy to speak the truth of Jesus Christ: He is our rock, our water, our food, and our drink. Christ is the living sign of God’s faithfulness. I do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, that our ancestors were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, and all ate the same spiritual food, and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual rock that followed them, and the rock was Christ. Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them, and they were struck down in the wilderness. Now these things occurred as examples for us, so that we might not desire evil as they did. Do not become idolaters as some of them did; as it is written, ‘The people sat down to eat and drink, and they rose up to play.’ We must not indulge in sexual immorality as some of them did, and twenty three thousand fell in a single day. We must not put Christ to the test, as some of them did, and were destroyed by serpents. And do not complain as some of them did, and were destroyed by the destroyer. These things happened to them to serve as an example, and they were written down to instruct us, on whom the ends of the ages have come. So if you think you are standing, watch out that you do not fall. No testing has overtaken you that is not common to everyone. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tested beyond your strength, but with the testing he will also provide the way out so that you may be able to endure it. NRSV Reader Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church. All Thanks be to God. Gospel Acclamation CP 630 – “You, Lord, Are Both Lamb and Shepherd,” Stanzas 1-3 -7-
The Holy Gospel Luke 13:1-9 Celebrant The Lord be with you. All And also with you. Celebrant The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. All Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Asked about current tragic events, Jesus turns a lesson about whether suffering is deserved into a hard call to obedience. He then tells a parable that holds out hope that the timeline for ultimate judgment will be tempered by patience. At that very time there were some present who told him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. He asked them, ‘Do you think that because these Galileans suffered in this way they were worse sinners than all other Galileans? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish as they did. Or those eighteen who were killed when the tower of Siloam fell on them do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others living in Jerusalem? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish just as they did.’ Then he told this parable: ‘A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came looking for fruit on it and found none. So he said to the gardener, “See here! For three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree, and still I find none. Cut it down! Why should it be wasting the soil?” He replied, “Sir, let it alone for one more year, until I dig round it and put manure on it. If it bears fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down.” NRSV Celebrant The Gospel of Christ. People Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Gospel Acclamation CP 630 – “You, Lord, Are Both Lamb and Shepherd,” Stanza 4 -8-
Sermon The Reverend Lorne Manweiler, Rector Affirmation of Faith – The Apostles Creed Celebrant Let us confess the faith of our Baptism, as we say, I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. The Preparation of the Gifts and Offertory Canticle Second stanza: Send forth your light and your love, O Lord; Fill my heart with your Holy Spirit; Lead me, lead me into your presence And teach me to love your ways, O Jesus; Restore unto me the joy of your salvation, And uphold me with your free Spirit. – T HE C ELEBRATION OF THE E UCHARIST – Prayer over the Gifts Celebrant God of wisdom, may the light of the eternal Word, our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, guide us to your glory. We ask this in his name. All Amen. The Great Thanksgiving BAS Supp Euch Pr 3; Ev Luth W Preface for Lent Celebrant The Lord be with you All And also with you. Celebrant Lift up your hearts. All We lift them to the Lord. Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All It is right to give our thanks and praise. Celebrant It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ. You call your people to cleanse their hearts and prepare with joy for the paschal feast, that, renewed in the gift of baptism, we may come to the fullness of your grace. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: - 11 -
Celebrant We praise you, merciful Father, not as we ought, but as we are able, because in your tender love you gave the world your only Son, in order that the world might be saved through him. He made you known by taking the form of a servant, healing the sick, liberating the oppressed, reaching out to the lost. Betrayed, reviled, and nailed to the cross, he confronted the power of sin and disarmed it for ever. In his offering of himself, he became the perfect and sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. - 12 -
Redeemed by Christ, we have been adopted as your children; by your pardon you have made us worthy to praise you. On the night he was betrayed, Jesus, at supper with his friends, took bread, gave you thanks, broke the bread, gave it to them, and said, “Take and eat: this is my body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this all of you: this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” In obedience to him and with grateful hearts we approach your holy table, remembering our Saviour’s sacrifice, and rejoicing in his victory. Confident in his sovereign purpose, we proclaim our hope: Celebrant Send your Holy Spirit on us that as we receive this bread and this cup we may partake of the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, and feed on him in our hearts by faith with thanksgiving. May we be renewed in his risen life, filled with love, and strengthened in our will to serve others; and make of our lives, we pray, a pure and holy sacrifice, acceptable to you, knitting us - 13 -
together as one in your Son Jesus Christ, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be all honour and glory, now and forever. The Lord’s Prayer - 14 -
The Breaking of the Bread Celebrant Taste and see that the Lord is good; Psalm 34:8 All happy are those who take refuge in him. The Communion Celebrant The gifts of God for the people of God. People Thanks be to God. Some helps regarding Communion at St. Philip’s during COVID-19: • Please follow the direction of the ushers to come forward for Communion; • two lines are formed in the side aisles; if you wish to receive a blessing rather than to commune, please proceed to the Celebrant’s queue; • the bread, the body of Christ, is offered at this time so that we all can more safely celebrate the Eucharist together; temporarily, the priest receives the wine, Christ’s blood, from the chalice, on behalf of God’s people; • hand sanitizer should be used before communing and is available as you come forward; • please commune individually or in your cohort group to ensure safer physical distancing. The Distribution Hymn Psalm 23 by Bobby McFerrin Hymn CP 50 – “Now My Tongue, the Mystery Telling” - 15 -
Prayer after Communion Celebrant All your works praise you, O Lord. All And your faithful servants bless you. Gracious God, we thank you for feeding us with the body and blood of your Son Jesus Christ. May we, who share his body, live his risen life; we, who drink his cup, bring life to others; we, whom the Spirit lights, give light to the world. Keep us firm in the hope you have set before us, so that we and all your children shall be free, and the whole earth live to praise your name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Parish Announcements Given by the Churchwardens – S ENDING THE C OMMUNITY F ORWARD INTO THE W ORLD – Benediction Celebrant May Christ dwell in your hearts through faith— Ephesians 3:17-19 that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. And the Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord’s face shine on you with grace and mercy. The Lord look upon you with favour and + give you peace. All Amen. - 16 -
