VIETNAM WAR MEMORIES JAMES “JIM” PALADINO Jim Paladino was inducted into the Army just three days after earning his degree in Electrical Engineering in 1958. Upon completing basic training, he was assigned to the Signal Corp and specialized in radar repair. He was asked to become a training instructor, which set the course of his life in a wonderful direction. Following four months of teaching radar courses, Jim accepted an offer to transfer to Redstone Arsenal, where he taught missile guidance for three missile systems. This included writing course lesson plans, in-class training for both students and instructor students, and participating in field tests. After his Army career came to a conclusion Jim went to work for a Grumman, the aerospace contractor, providing engineering and management services for Navy and Air Force aircraft, space shuttle, and NRO space programs. When asked what was the most rewarding personally about serving in the Army, Jim answered, “The opportunity to learn so many electronic systems in such a short period of time and the professional growth I gained in the Army led to a successful post-military career and personal satisfaction in my private life.” Jim prizes his Good Conduct Medal and Soldier of the Quarter award. Having moved to WV in 2013, Jim adds, “Westbrook Village is a great place to call home,” and he loves volunteering to help other seniors. We honor and thank you for your service to our country, James Paladino! ★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★ JOHN G. ZONDLO During his first six years after basic training and tech school, John Zondlo worked in the air crew protection field maintaining life support and survival equipment for pilots and other air crew. He served at Clark Airbase in the Philippines from 1963 to 1964 and at Kelly AFB in Texas from 1964-1968. He trained pilots and other crew members on the use of survival equipment and was able to attend Water Survival School in Okinawa and the Royal Air Force Jungle Survival School, Singapore. In 1968 John graduated from the Air Force Office of Special Investigations School in Washington DC. The last 4 years he mainly worked on sensitive counter-intelligence matters. These duties were part of his work in the Philippines for 20 years. He always felt rewarded when justice was served. He retired in 1982 as Senior Master Sergeant just prior to yet another promotion. Thus began his civilian law enforcement career as an investigator for the AZ Department of Economic Security. Then he did work as a special auditor for ARAMCO in Houston, and afterward came back to Arizona to work as a Criminal Intelligence Analyst/Supervisor for the Department of Public Safety. John is proud of his Meritorious Service Medal, and was personally fulfilled when justice was served due to his work. John and his wife, JoAnn, have 6 children between them and 9 grandchildren. They both love the people of WV. We honor and thank you for your service to our country, John Zondlo! 10 | Westbrook Village LIVING June 2021
