Margaret was awarded an MBE in 1995 for services to Bell Ringing and is one of the longest serving members of the Lincoln Guild of Bell Ringers and highly regarded amongst her contemporaries. Throughout her years at All Saints Church, Margaret has been a wonderful teacher giving support and guidance and will be sorely missed; her knowledge and expertise is second to none and she is an inspiration to us all. 1st Nettleham Scouts A s another Scouting year comes to a close it is always good to reflect on the achievements and activities of our Group in Nettleham. We are very fortunate to continue to have committed and enthusiastic leaders here in Nettleham which reflects on the oversubscribed beaver, cub and scout units. The young people get excellent scouting experiences throughout the Group, supported by the leaders, their parents/carers and the wider village community. The Scout Movement has just released the next five year plan – Skills for Life – with this mission statement “Scouting actively engages and supports young people in their personal development, empowering them to make a positive contribution to society” As a Group we will continue to work together to help the young people achieve, enjoy and contribute within the fun and exciting environment that Scouting offers. These photos show a few of the great activities that our Group have taken part in over the past few months. Camping, climbing, canoeing, crafts etc and three of our scouts achieved their Chief Scout’s Gold Award which is the highest challenge award a scout can achieve. Well done! A massive thank you to all the leaders and helpers. Time for a break now but we will be back in September ready for more challenges! ‘The Great Get Together’ - by Debbie Stevens O n Saturday 23rd June, Nettleham Festive Market committee member Debbie Stevens held her first event aimed at bringing the local community together. It was a fantastic day with representatives from various clubs and groups from the village coming down to give out information on what activities are available in Nettleham. There were delicious handmade cakes and sandwiches as well as tea and coffee available, free of charge. “I would like to thank everyone that came along, including all those that gave up their Saturday morning to help support the event, also, a special thank you to those that donated cakes- they were amazing! We had the support of the Co- op, Waitrose and Tesco who gave a donation towards the food.” Debbie is also arranging a Christmas day meal for anyone in the village that would usually be alone, please contact Debbie on 01522 807366 for further information and to book a place. Nettleham Parish Council Stand at the Nettleham Carnival Throughout the afternoon Nettleham Parish Councillors presented the current work and expenditure of the Parish Council and were there to answer questions from the public. There was a leaflet available on how and why you might stand for the Council next year and a questionnaire asking residents opinion and advice on the future uses of Mulsanne park and it’s Pavilion. Beckside attracts many visitors and residents alike for a pleasant walk alongside the water from Vicarage Lane to Watermill Lane then up Green Lane which is very striking when Some of the village amenity areas you might the trees are in full leaf and meet at the top think are simply grassy spaces but they are to form a tunnel-like walkway. of historical interest. On Mill Hill there was a Pinfold which was a walled enclosure for penning stray farm animals. On Washdyke Lane a quarry was once in operation and there were also alms houses for the poor; and NETTLEHAM PARISH of course sheep were dipped in the beck near the Kingsway junction - hence the road name COUNCIL AMENITY AREAS (Washdyke). Apart from the main areas the Parish Council is responsible for such as The Old School, Mulsanne Park, Bill Bailey’s playing field, the burial ground, etc., there are also many other aspects of the village which the Property Committee look after which are classed as amenity areas. The largest of these is the Village Green which is a quintessential feature of village life. Far from being a network of roads and shops as it is now, in times past it was an open green space and was once the location for the village stocks used for punishing troublemakers; a little further away on Vicarage Lane a ducking stool was used in the beck for disorderly women, scolds, and dishonest tradesmen! In more recent times a maypole would be erected for the traditional celebrations of Mayday and the Burton Hunt used to regularly start their meet on The Green. These activities would have brought the crowds out in force and happily people still come to the heart of the village for more pleasurable enjoyment like our annual carnival in the summer and more recently the first festive market held in December, not forgetting delicious cooked breakfasts by the Scouts twice a year. Remembrance Sunday is also a focus every November for a collective service at our War Memorial. We are fortunate to retain an iconic 8 Please mention Nettleham Matters when responding to advertisers

Library • Office Space • Community Groups I had a lovely moment the other night, on my evening run, when I ran past the hub and saw circuits on in the car park. My mind wandered to earlier on that day when I had brought my childminded Hand Prints children into the hub to do hand prints on the Mural wall. Then remembering that someone had hired out the studio space so their children could practise dance classes because there wasn’t enough space at home. On the Saturday just gone I remembered walking past the hub window and Buddies dementia group having an afternoon dance watching them arm in arm, dancing away. I remembered Janet having mosaic classes in her studio and a lady from it asked if she could display her artwork on our wall. Her son had asked her the previous week to start displaying her artwork because it was so good. In one week she had sold two art pieces and this was the first time she had done anything like this. I remembered having to help out at messy play because it had become so popular and coming out of there with a beaming smile from watching all the little children having fun exploring with their senses. I remembered working away in my office listening to a saxophonist play modern music in the hub because he had come from Sound Lincs recruiting older adults to become a part of It's so lovely that three lovely ladies in the community are helping a music workshop and listening to a couple of our volunteers learning us to brighten up our hallway. They have been working on a Mural to play an ukulele. I love walking my dog past the hub first thing in the that represents the story of the hub. Its so lovely to see each morning morning and seeing people sitting outside having a cup of coffee with something new added. I am especially loving the wall that has been friends or family or reading a book. It brings a warm fussy feeling to my dedicated community hands. Its so lovely to see everyone painting belly knowing that the hub is a place for everyone in the community their hand and getting quite giddy in the process and then watching and that there is so many different things that go on all of the time. everyone print their hands on the wall.
