With Arizona temperatures in the three digits these delightful, refreshing and cool drinks should help bring down the heat! Cucumber Lemonade Watermelon Mint Summer Cooler Ingredients: Ingredients: 1 quart lemonade 4 – 5 cups cubed watermelon ½ large cucumber (peeled and cut in big chunks) ½ cup cold water Procedure: 4-5 sprigs fresh mint Put the lemonade into a blender. ¼ cup sugar (or sweetener to taste) Add cucumber and blend well. Add lemon slices and thin cucumber slices to the inside of the glass for presentation. Fill glass with crushed ice. Pour and enjoy! Proceedure Place watermelon cubes, water and mint in blender. Blend well until mint is completely integrated. Taste for sweetness and add sugar as desired. Pour over glasses of ice and serve with a mint sprig on top. Note: I prefer to freeze my watermelon cubes in a plastic zip lock-type bag and then use the amount needed. The frozen watermelon will give your drink an icy, slushy texture. To make these adult drinks, add vodka as your final ingredient! 4 | Westbrook Village LIVING August 2021

VIETNAM WAR MEMORIES SAM MCNUTT Sam McNutt completed basic training for the U.S. Air Force in 1954 and was sent to the Philippines to serve as a crypto communications specialist, encoding and decoding various types of communications. This specialty would take him around the U.S. and the world, including Pakistan, London, Portugal and Greenland. He particularly enjoyed working in administration at the U.S. Embassy in Lisbon, Portugal, because that is where he met his wife, Norma. Sam enjoyed all of his years of service and loved moving around the world, never dreaming he would travel so much. He fondly remembers riding a camel in Pakistan. He proudly served and is grateful to have learned and experienced so many different cultures. Retiring from the Air Force in 1976, Sam received the commendation medal awarded for outstanding achievement, and went on to enjoy success in the recreational vehicle sales industry, winning many awards. It is notable that Sam also served the WV Posse for many years, and was selected Posse Commander for 2005, 2010, 2015 and 2018---more terms than any other officer thus far. We honor and thank you for your service to our country, Sam McNutt! ★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★ TED MANZANARES Ted Manzanares began his service in the Army at Fort Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska in 1963. He worked at the Radiochemical Laboratory there, specializing in radioactive material. He also worked with the Army on assignment for Dow Chemical in Health Physics before the military was impacted by the 1964 Great Alaskan earthquake. Because of his knowledge base, Ted was asked to teach in Fairbanks, Alaska each year about chemical, biological, and nuclear warfare. His favorite part of serving was meeting other servicemen of all ranks and collaborating with them. He found the most challenging aspect of his service to be lengthy separations from family and friends. Ted is proud of his Sharp Shooter and Good Conduct medals. Ted owned and operated his own restaurant in Colorado, following his retirement from the Army. He and his wife, Carolyn, have enjoyed living in WV since 2007, and have loved being involved in golf, pickleball, and Veteran Club fundraisers. We honor and thank you for your service to our country, Ted Manzanares! 10 | Westbrook Village LIVING August 2021

GREAT BENEFITS WITH WV LOW IMPACT AEROBICS “Our sessions feature a nice range of activity,” reports Low Impact Aerobics Club president, Pat Brown. Pat remembers when she first began to attend classes fifteen years ago--the year after she moved to WV. “It is such a friendly group, and I love getting my blood flowing and feeling better with the exercise.” Researchers maintain that a minimum of 150 minutes per week of such exercise adds great benefit to overall health. And low-impact exercise minimizes the force placed on both the body and joints (think: knees, hips, and ankles). The classes at the Lakes take place three days a week (each M-W-Th) at 6:00pm, and an instructor leads the class for Tuesdays and Wednesdays, while the Thursday class enjoys following a DVD together. On Tuesdays the emphasis is low impact floor exercises, and on Thursdays low impact step moves are incorporated. “We have been re-opened since April of this year, and are looking for more residents to join in and get their Info: Pat Brown (Low Impact Aerobics President), 623-293-8037 blood moving again!” adds Pat. 24 | Westbrook Village LIVING August 2021
