Claire & Patrick McCuough September 7, 2019 Story by HANNAH BRENNAN Photos by JULES PHOTO + DESIGN “S wipe right on the nerds,” or at least that’s what Claire McCullough recommends. She met her husband, Patrick, on Bumble, a dating app, in January 2017. What started as a friendship grew quickly into a relationship, surprising Claire. “Patrick’s profile was not good at all,” she says. “Give people a chance. They surprise you. They stun you.” Patrick surprised Claire again with a proposal on a trip to New York City during the winter. The couple united with Patrick’s sisters and went around the city, stopping at every major Christmas tree. At one stop, both of their families waited for the big moment, but before Claire could answer they broke out into celebration. This close family dynamic explains the lengthy guest list for the wedding, with more than 300 people invited. “I have a huge family,” says Patrick. “It was pretty quickly realized there were only two or three places that could handle the amount of people we were thinking about inviting.” The couple decided on The Stella Hotel because it was most accommodating to people flying in from out of town. For their wedding, the McCulloughs stuck to a traditional style 10 INSITE September 2020

with simple white and green flowers. But, the parts that really made it special, Claire says, were the personal touches. “We got married at St. Joseph Catholic Church,” says Claire. “I went to school there for 12 years and that’s where Patrick’s parents got married.” The couple had a lot of special details at their wedding, like their photographer, florist, coordinator, and rehearsal dinner caterer being close family friends. Claire and Patrick also hung six photos at their reception of grandparents and parents. “They’ve all been married a long time,” says Claire. “We wanted their tradition to carry on at our wedding.” Claire says those were the personalized touches she cared about, not bothering with the “something borrowed, something blue” tradition or others like it. The couple couldn’t decide on one song for their first dance, so they did a first and last dance instead. Their country roots led them to choose One I Want by Flatland Calvary and Millionaire by Chris Stapleton. The only other time in planning she had trouble was in her hunt for a wedding dress. “We wanted their tradition to carry on at our wedding.” “We went to a few places over Christmas break and I couldn’t find anything I wanted so I just started ordering things online,” says Claire. “I was living in Midland at this time, so I had to make a special trip to Houston.” McCullough Vendors: Claire’s parents helped her pick out her dress, keeping in mind she wanted Ceremony Venue: St. Joseph something clean and sleek. W hen Candace and Tommy Hankins tied the knot on Sept. 15, 2018, it was truly a family affair. A friend Candace & Tommy Hankins officiated, cousins showed up in droves to bake desserts and stuff confetti poppers, and the whole thing was hosted at the September 15, 2018 venue Tommy’s parents own: Ant Street Inn in Brenham. The couple met working at the same Story by KATIE JAMES company in Irving. Their friendship Photos by KATHLYN DRAGNA PHOTOGRAPH turned into a relationship and quickly moved on to an engagement. Five months later, they were married. Even before they were engaged, Candace and Tommy started planning their wedding. It was during one of these planning sessions that Tommy decided to propose. He made an excuse to run home and returned to Candace’s apartment with the ring. That ring was bought at the same store Tommy’s dad had bought his mom’s engagement ring — and sold by the son of the man who sold his dad his mom’s ring. Our bridal party loved still being together that night after the wedding. They went and got tacos at midnight in their hotel robes.” The Hankins loved using local vendors since they knew the area well. Their photographer was able to take them all around downtown Brenham for their portraits because she knew all the best spots. “Because we had so many friends help us, I think more people felt included in our big day,” says Tommy. “Because it’s a small town, everybody knew my mom and dad and they still ask about us. A fter going to high school together, dancing at Hurricane Harry’s, dating briefly in their early 20s, and then separating for almost a decade, Ashley Ashley & Mahew Menchaca and Matthew Menchaca married in September of 2019. Their first dance was at Hurricane September 28, 2019 Harry’s: Matthew asked for Ashley’s hand, and while casually dancing and talking about their high school, they clicked. It Story by CELESTE ESTRADA wasn’t until about a decade after their Photos by ALL HEART PHOTOGRAPHY brief relationship that Ashley sent a Facebook friend request to Matthew, wondering and thinking about what the past years were like for him. “It was really serendipitous because I was thinking about her the night before,” says Matthew. “I hadn’t talked to her in a while, and I was wondering how she was doing. So the next morning I wake up to her friend request.” The relationship dynamic that developed between them was unique. Matthew came into town from San Antonio to spend time with Ashley one Easter weekend. The determination to find the right socks for Matthew led them to the mall, where, in March of 2018, they were engaged. “We end up at the jewelry store and they’re having a really good sale, like 10 years zero percent interest, and Matt was like, ‘Do you want a ring?’” says Ashley. “So we just went in there and bought an engagement ring. But the guy did make him get down on one knee, we have a picture of that. Of him getting down on one knee inside the jewelry store.” Ashley knew she wanted a fall wedding in their shared hometown of Bryan College Station. Her choice was 7F Lodge because of its elegant simplicity. “Being in B/CS in the fall, you need to plan everything around football season,” says Ashley. “So the only date in the book at the time was our wedding date because that was the Arkansas game that was already way planned out.” Ashley knew simple was the approach to take in planning her wedding. The couple used DIY methods for signs and other aspects of their wedding. Ashley’s dad built the centerpieces for the wedding, too. Matthew and Ashley agree that the day of the wedding was chaotic. The couple almost forgot the polaroid camera for the guest book and Ashley’s wedding band was nearly too late. Ward and her team also have small menu items kept on a regular basis like jalapeno popper hamburgers, waffle fries, barbeque brisket paninis, pulled pork nachos, tomato bisque soup, salads, and more. But, the pizza is a new must for Calvert locals. “I’ve had a couple of them say we’ve ruined them because they used to go to a chain pizza company,” says Ward. “Now they just can’t because it’s just not the same.” Wonkey Donkey has around 20 to 30 regulars, some of whom, even through quarantine, have ordered from the Wonkey Donkey every week. As a new business in a small town, the Wonkey Donkey was heavily affected by the pandemic, doing about 65% less business than before COVID-19. Opening to 50% capacity was helpful for this large restaurant that’s able to accommodate a lot more people than smaller venues. pre-organizing, says Kuver. By assessing the pre-organized space, one can truly begin to visualize and determine how much storage will be necessary. After pre-organizing, it’s time to purchase, she says. A key component to organizing and maximizing small spaces is to keep it in scale with the room, says Kuver. Based on the dimensions of a room, people can determine which furniture would match the scale of the room best. Sales representatives at furniture stores are equipped to find what you’re looking for when you know dimensions, she says. The goal is for furniture to be proportional to the room in question. Just as important is the color, openness, and lighting of a room. Go vertical with storage and decor, say both Kuver and Gidley. Utilizing the full height of the wall is going to make the space feel larger. Light or neutral-colored walls and ceilings paired with mirrors reflecting light sources will make a space feel larger, they agree. Achieve a feeling of grandness with windows by placing a curtain rod just below the ceiling, measuring the curtain to barely touch the floor, says Kuver. “Allowing as much natural light to come in is really important, so if you’ve got a window or two, allow those windows to really provide you with the illusion of more space,” says Kuver. For those who have limited mobility, adding decor, storage, and shelving should still be done vertically, says Kuver. However, it would be beneficial to customize their space to tailor to their needs and preferences. “Anything higher than where you can stand and lift your arms comfortably, make that decorative, says Kuver. “And keep your storage and your organizational pieces at your eye to lower level, just to make it easier on you as a person to bring down and put back up.” Bryan College Station has a lot of home good stores to explore when organizing and maximizing home spaces, better time,” says Kuver. “Spend your such as Home Goods, At Home, Target, money on what you absolutely need, but and Walmart, says Kuver.
