Phases of a Bass Angler’s Career Many Seasoned Bass anglers have practiced their skills over many years and hundreds, or more, fishing trips. As a collective, most agree that there seems to be four phases to an angling career. The first phase is when the angler gets interested in bass fishing. Maybe as a result of a trip with a family member, or maybe a TV show, or just casual conversation with pals. The new fisherman makes a few trips to the lake and learns the basics of the sport. He will usually purchase a basic rod and reel and a handful of lures. He catches a few fish and dreams of someday catching a lunker. The second phase usually about a year later, arrives and the angler gets a bit more serious in the sport and purchases his first bass boat. He adds several more rods and reels and learns various fishing techniques. Learning to read and understand the habitat of the bass, understanding the electronics in the boat comes next as he simultaneously learns careful boat handling. He begins to catch a few more fish while still searching for the elusive lunker. The third phase is usually the longest lasting period. This is when the angler begins to master the techniques of bass fishing. He invests in a bigger and more modern tournament fishing boat. He purchases more specialized equipment and begins entering competitive contests. He begins to travel and compete at higher and higher levels of competition and begins cashing checks for his successes. He masters most of the variables of the sport and becomes an ambassador for the sport and industry. He still searches for the lunker that will anchor his day in the water. The fourth phase is usually the most satisfying phase. This is when the professional anger puts down his rods, retires from competition, and begins introducing youngsters and beginning fisherpersons to the art and science of bass fishing. He teaches all that he has learned to all who will listen. And then he realizes that he has finally caught that lunker of all lunkers when he sees the excitement in the face of his students.
